EA says Madden NFL will remain the exclusive action simulation game for NFL football. The announcement does not disclose how many years the agreement covers or when it expires.
Did EA and the NFL extend the Madden license?
Yes. The August 6, 2024 report that the two sides were negotiating an extension was followed by an official announcement from EA and the NFL on October 22, 2025. They described the new agreement as expanded, multi-year and exclusive. The announcement does not provide its financial terms or exact duration.
The 2024 report was about talks, not confirmation of a completed deal. The later joint announcement is the source for the current agreement. EA and the NFL’s announcement sets out the partners’ stated scope.
What does the agreement make exclusive?
EA says Madden NFL remains “the exclusive action simulation game for NFL football.” That is a specific claim about NFL action simulation, not a statement that EA has exclusive rights to every kind of NFL-related game or interactive experience.

The earlier deal is not a reliable substitute for the new contract’s term. In March 2020, NFL.com reported a six-year renewal involving the NFL, NFL Players Association and EA. That report described the earlier agreement, not the duration of the deal announced in 2025. NFL.com’s 2020 report also discussed opportunities beyond simulation games.
How the talks became an announced agreement
- March 2020: NFL.com reported a six-year renewal among the NFL, NFLPA and EA. It said Madden would remain the exclusive authentic football simulation game, alongside opportunities for other genres and experiences.
- August 6, 2024: Insider Gaming reported that EA and the NFL were in talks to extend Madden’s exclusive simulation rights. That report documented negotiations at the time, not their outcome. Insider Gaming’s report is historical context.
- October 22, 2025: EA and the NFL announced the expanded, multi-year exclusive agreement and reaffirmed Madden’s NFL action-simulation position.
What the partners say about Madden’s scale
EA SPORTS President Cam Weber said more than 2 billion Madden NFL games are played each year. EA’s announcement also says the equivalent of 23,000 NFL seasons are played in Madden each day. These are figures published by the partners; the announcement passages do not explain how either figure was calculated. The EA announcement contains the statements and figures.
