EA said the decision was part of a move to focus creative work on its most significant growth opportunities; the company did not publicly give a more specific reason for canceling this project.
What happened to EA’s Black Panther game?
EA confirmed in May 2025 that it had canceled the game and shut down Cliffhanger Games, the Seattle-based studio developing it. The project had been announced in July 2023 as an early-stage collaboration with Marvel Games. GameSpot reported EA’s confirmation on May 28, 2025; Variety also reported the cancellation and closure.
Why did EA close Cliffhanger Games?
EA Entertainment president Laura Miele said the decisions were intended to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” That is EA’s stated rationale. The public accounts do not establish a more specific cause, such as the project’s budget, its quality, or a disagreement with Marvel. GameSpot’s report attributes the statement to Miele’s staff memo.
What was the game supposed to be?
EA announced Cliffhanger Games on July 10, 2023, describing the project as an original, third-person, single-player action-adventure made with Marvel Games. The studio’s stated ambition was a story-driven, expansive and reactive world in which players would take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector. EA cautioned at announcement that development was early and “there was a long road ahead.” EA’s announcement did not include a release window.

EA said the studio was led by Kevin Stephens and included developers with experience on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and other major game franchises. Those details described the team and its ambitions at announcement; they do not show that the game reached completion or public testing.
How many people were laid off?
The reports did not provide an exact number of employees affected at Cliffhanger. Variety said the cuts were fewer than the roughly 300 staff EA had let go the previous month; that is a comparison and upper bound, not a layoff count for Cliffhanger. Miele said EA would try to help affected employees find other roles within the company. Variety’s account also noted additional cuts affecting EA’s mobile and central teams.

Is EA still making Marvel games?
Yes. The cancellation did not end EA and Marvel’s broader multi-title collaboration, according to statements reported by GameSpot. The reporting identified Motive Studio’s Iron Man project and a third, then-unannounced Marvel project among the other titles covered by the relationship. No release order or schedule for those projects was established in that reporting. GameSpot’s coverage discusses the continuing collaboration.
