EA shut down Origin Services on April 17, 2025. Origin is no longer the supported PC and Mac launcher, but EA did not automatically delete games purchased through it. The replacement is the free EA app. Sign in with the same EA Account you used in Origin to access eligible games, DLC, purchases, achievements, friends, and saved data.
What exactly shut down?
EA’s service-updates page lists Origin Services as shut down on April 17, 2025. That refers to the Origin desktop client and its supporting authentication and launcher services.

It does not mean that every EA game server closed on the same day. Individual games and online features have separate shutdown decisions and listings. Your EA Account, purchased licenses, and game-specific online services are separate from the retired Origin application.
It also does not directly affect PlayStation or Xbox players. Origin was EA’s PC and Mac launcher; console users still use their platform’s purchase systems while continuing to use EA Accounts and, where applicable, platform-specific EA Play memberships.

The EA app is the supported replacement
EA describes the EA app as Origin’s replacement on both Windows and Mac. Download it only from EA’s official page—not from sites offering modified Origin installers, bypass tools, or “Origin revival” clients.
- Download the Windows or Mac version of the EA app.
- Install it from EA’s official installer.
- Sign in with the EA Account previously used with Origin.
- Open Library and search for your games.
- Install a game, or select it to launch an existing installation if the app recognizes it.
- If an existing installation is not detected, use the EA app’s installation or repair options rather than immediately redownloading or repurchasing the game.
The migration itself should not require buying the games again.
What should have transferred?
EA’s migration FAQ says the following account-linked information was intended to carry over when users signed into the correct EA Account:

- Some existing installed games, without necessarily requiring a full redownload
“Should transfer” is not the same as a guarantee for every legacy title or local configuration. Game-specific support, regional restrictions, unredeemed product codes, account sanctions, corrupted installations, mods, third-party launchers, and old DRM components can all create exceptions. A local save file is also different from cloud data: moving launchers does not guarantee that every locally stored save or custom configuration will be found automatically.
If your games are missing
Do not buy the game again until you have checked the account and entitlement. EA’s missing-games guide recommends checking the following:
- Close the EA app completely and restart it.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Confirm the email address and EA Account in the account settings.
- Check the Library filters and search for the title manually.
- Confirm whether the missing item is a base game, DLC, subscription entitlement, or trial.
- Check whether a product code was redeemed on a different EA Account or never redeemed.
- Check the EA server-status page for an outage.
- Check whether an account ban or suspension is affecting access.
If the purchase still does not appear, contact EA Help with the original receipt, product code if applicable, purchase platform, account email, and game title. Support can investigate account-linked purchases, but it cannot be assumed that every missing entitlement or unsupported legacy title can be restored.

Older Windows PCs and Macs
According to EA’s current installation guidance, the EA app supports:

- Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11 on a minimum 64-bit PC.
- Mac: macOS Catalina 10.15.8 or newer.
That creates three different problems that should not be confused:
- Origin stopped connecting: its services were retired.
- The EA app will not install: the computer or operating system may be outside EA’s supported requirements.
- The EA app installs but a game will not run: the individual game may have separate compatibility, DRM, graphics, or anti-cheat requirements.
Upgrading an old computer or operating system may make the launcher installable, but it does not guarantee that every older EA game will run correctly.

What if you bought an EA game on Steam or Epic?
Steam and Epic remain storefronts for eligible EA games, but they do not necessarily remove EA’s account or launcher requirements. EA says some PC titles purchased through Steam or the Epic Games Store may still guide you to install the EA app for authentication or related services.
These are separate situations:
- A game bought directly from EA is associated with the EA Account used for that purchase.
- A Steam or Epic purchase is associated with that storefront and may also need to be linked to an EA Account.
- Owning a game is different from accessing it through a subscription.
- EA Play memberships on EA.com, Steam, Epic, PlayStation, and Xbox are not automatically interchangeable; platform-specific terms apply.
The EA app may therefore be an additional launcher, not a replacement for Steam or Epic’s purchase and download process.
EA Play and EA Play Pro
Origin’s retirement did not cancel EA Play, but subscription access depends on the correct account and platform. If a game came through EA Play rather than a purchase, access can end when the relevant membership ends or when a title leaves the catalog. Do not treat a subscription entitlement as permanent ownership.

EA Play Pro is the premium PC tier and is available through the EA app, not through Steam or Epic. EA’s page showed U.S. price signals of $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year for EA Play, and $16.99 per month or $119.99 per year for EA Play Pro when checked on August 16, 2026. Prices vary by region, tax, platform, promotions, and later changes, so verify the current price before subscribing.
Neither subscription is necessary merely to recover a game you already own.
Can you still play offline?
Do not assume that Origin’s shutdown guarantees permanent offline access. EA’s PC terms state that games may require the EA app, an EA Account, and an internet connection for authentication or license verification. EA Play titles may also require periodic confirmation of an active membership.

Launch and authenticate the games you plan to play before traveling or deliberately disconnecting.
Common migration problems
- Wrong account: the game was purchased on another EA Account.
- Wrong product type: you are looking for DLC or a subscription title without owning the base game.
- Unredeemed code: a product key was never linked to the current account.
- Temporary outage: a server problem makes a library appear incomplete.
- Existing files not detected: the app may need the correct install location or a repair process.
- Security software interference: firewall or antivirus rules may block the EA app or related files.
- Unsupported system: 32-bit Windows or an older Mac may not meet the EA app requirements.
- Game-specific failure: mods, old DRM, third-party launchers, or anti-cheat can prevent an otherwise successful migration.
EA’s installation and update guidance includes allowing the EA app and related files through firewall or antivirus software when connection or installation fails.
