EA SPORTS FC 26 launched worldwide on September 26, 2025, with two distinct gameplay presets: Competitive for responsive online play and Authentic for a more realism-focused offline experience. That split is the clearest reason some reviewers found the gameplay better than FC 25—but “better” depends on the mode, update and platform. EA’s own launch-period feedback also acknowledged concerns about defending dribblers and kickoff threats. Those reports describe feedback at the time, not proof that every player encountered the issues or that they remain in the current build.
What changed in FC 26 gameplay?
EA designed Competitive and Authentic as separate experiences rather than a single set of gameplay settings. Competitive prioritizes responsiveness, consistency and control; Authentic aims for a more realistic tempo. EA announced the game for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Luna and Nintendo Switch platforms, but the gameplay notes do not establish that every platform or build behaves identically. Competitive: quicker and more player-controlled
EA says Competitive is tuned for faster passing and tighter, quicker dribbling. Its changes also include fewer automatic AI tackles and blocks, less AI defending, revised fatigue behavior, smoother animation transitions, goalkeeper deflections intended to move the ball away from danger, and fewer rebounds after tackles, blocks and interceptions. These are EA’s stated design changes, not independent measurements proving the preset is superior.
Authentic: realism-focused, mainly offline
Authentic uses its own tuning, with a slower, realism-oriented feel. It is the default for Manager and Player Career, and optional in Kick-Off. Competitive is mandatory in Ultimate Team, Clubs, Online Seasons and Online Friendlies; it is optional in Kick-Off and Career Mode. Authentic is unavailable in Ultimate Team and Clubs, so players cannot select it for those modes.

What are the concerns about defending and kickoffs?
In its October 2025 feedback update, EA said some players reported that defending dribblers felt difficult, particularly near the edge of the box, and that kickoff positioning created too many scoring threats. EA said it had addressed some physical-tackle cases, planned an improvement to jockeying responsiveness, had already changed kickoff positioning, and intended further changes. These are dated reports and EA’s description of its response—not evidence that every player shared the concern or that it persists in a later version. The update also recorded release-period issues involving Career Mode contracts and transfers, PC optimization and dropped controller inputs, and connectivity or matchmaking. What do later gameplay updates say?
EA’s version 1.2.0 notes, published in 2025, list adjustments to through-pass and crossing aim response, teammate attacking runs, defensive marking, short-corner marking and goalkeeper decisions. EA described particular cases behind some changes, including strikers not supporting counterattacks and goalkeepers punching when catching would be preferable. The notes show that these areas were adjusted; they do not guarantee that every issue was eliminated for every mode, platform or build. See the version 1.2.0 notes.

EA’s November 2025 feedback update said a slowdown affecting Controlled Sprint Dribbling was more substantial than intended and had been reverted. It also described offline CPU AI changes and planned Squad Battles adjustments intended to have the AI move the ball forward and create chances sooner. There is no single objective verdict in the available evidence. TechRadar’s early review said FC 26 played better than FC 25 in that reviewer’s experience and praised the slower offline option. IGN also judged the on-pitch gameplay positively, while raising increased monetization as a concern, including Ultimate Team and a Season Pass affecting Career Mode. For a fair comparison, identify the preset, mode, platform and gameplay update being discussed. Competitive and Authentic are meant to feel different; an online Ultimate Team match is not a like-for-like comparison with an Authentic Career Mode match. The evidence supports saying that FC 26 changed the gameplay approach and that some reviewers preferred it, while EA’s subsequent updates show that key details were still being tuned after launch.
