EA SPORTS FC 26’s biggest change is a choice between two gameplay presets: Competitive for responsive online matches and Authentic for a more simulation-oriented feel in Career and selected offline modes. The game also adds Career challenges, player Archetypes, Ultimate Team competitions, tactical options and accessibility settings. EA announced these features as design goals; they are not independent evidence that every change improves play for every player.
What changed in FC 26 gameplay?
EA describes FC 26 as a set of gameplay refinements across movement and dribbling, goalkeepers, defending, passing and shooting, positioning, physicality, ball control and responsiveness. The practical headline is that you can choose between Competitive and Authentic presets, rather than getting one intended match feel in every mode.

That means the choice is partly about mode access: players focused on Ultimate Team or Clubs cannot switch those modes to Authentic. Movement, goalkeepers and shooting
EA says FC 26 includes more responsive dribbling and improved transitions between animations. Goalkeeper updates include better control over deflections and machine-learning-driven positioning in certain situations. EA specifically limits the reinforcement-learning positioning feature to keeper positioning: it is not used when the goalkeeper makes a save or catch.

EA also removed Timed Finishing and revised the Low Driven shot input. The stated aim is more consistent outcomes and a greater role for Precision Shooting in distinguishing shot skill. Those are EA’s intended design outcomes, not a guarantee of how the changes will feel in every match.
What is new in Career and player progression?
Manager Live Challenges
Manager Live is a hub for challenges with different lengths and scenarios, including situations inspired by real-world football and alternative situations. EA describes the feature as evolving through the season, so a particular challenge should not be assumed to remain available permanently. The launch material also names Original Career and Live Start Points.

Archetypes in Player Career and Clubs
In Player Career and Clubs, players choose an Archetype and develop it by earning Archetype XP, improving attributes and unlocking perks. EA presents Archetypes as a way to give created players more distinct roles and progression paths.

FC 26 adds several competition formats and updates to existing ones. EA’s feature page lists:

What tactical options are new?
EA’s FC IQ notes add four Player Roles: Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback and Box Crasher. The notes also describe eight additional set-piece assignments, more flexible role positioning, and the ability to save and load tactics codes across Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies. These options are useful for players who want to carry a setup between supported modes or adjust how individual roles behave.
What accessibility features does FC 26 add?
New options include High-Contrast Mode, color choices for teams, goalkeepers, referees and the ball, plus a pitch-saturation slider. EA says High-Contrast Mode is available in head-to-head play and designed to make players and important pitch elements easier to distinguish, including for some people with low vision or difficulty tracking fast gameplay. EA’s current features page also describes a later “World’s Game” update with an international tournament mode featuring 48 national teams, authentic stadiums, themed Manager Live Challenges, and international ICONs and Heroes in Player Career. This is a later update, not a launch-day feature.

EA lists September 26, 2025, as the Standard Edition release date. Ultimate Edition and EA Play early access began September 19, 2025. EA’s launch announcement lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Amazon Luna, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, as well as availability through EA Play.
