EA Tiburon developed EA SPORTS PGA TOUR for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, according to EA’s product page. Its design leans toward a deliberate, simulation-style round rather than a purely casual arcade experience. You shape shots around golfer attributes and course conditions, with variables such as wind and altitude affecting play.

EA calls its shot system Pure Strike and describes it as combining golfer attributes with ball behavior. That is the publisher’s feature description, not a guarantee that every shot feels responsive in practice: GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling found swing latency and putting consistency to be weak points in the PS5 version.
How good are the career mode and courses?
Career mode gives rounds a longer-term purpose
Career Mode lets you create and develop a golfer, compete through events, and pursue major tournaments and the FedExCup. EA’s March 21, 2023 career announcement also describes optional AI Pairings, which let you play shot-for-shot alongside a professional golfer. The mode’s structure is a strong reason to consider the game if you want progression beyond isolated rounds.

EA announced 30 courses for launch: 28 real-life courses and two fantasy courses. That is the launch roster figure, not a verified current total; the game received later course additions. The original roster announcement also describes how EA mapped courses, but the available evidence does not establish a present-day course count.
How difficult is it to learn?
EA’s beginner guide distinguishes assisted gameplay styles from simulation settings, so players can choose how much help they want. That flexibility does not eliminate the learning curve. GameSpot’s review says the game barely introduces its mechanics, and reports a laggy swing feel and inconsistent putting. Those complaints matter because timing and touch are central to a golf game: a demanding system can feel rewarding once understood, but poor onboarding makes it harder to tell whether a missed shot came from the player’s decision or the controls.

Wakeling characterized the game as methodical and tactical, and concluded: “After almost a decade away from the sport, EA’s return to the golf course is a promising one.” His assessment was not unreserved praise; the mechanical frustrations temper the appeal of the course and career content.
What did critics and players think?
GameSpot scored the PS5 version 70/100 in Richard Wakeling’s review published April 12, 2023. Metacritic’s PS5 page showed a 76/100 critic score from 31 reviews, labeled Generally Favorable, and a 6.1/10 user score from 90 ratings, labeled Mixed or Average, when observed in 2026. Metacritic aggregates can change as reviews and ratings are added, so treat those figures as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent verdict.

Can you play with friends on other platforms?
EA says cross-play is unavailable, so players on different platforms cannot play together. That is separate from created-golfer progression: EA’s community FAQ says that progression is supported across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Cross-platform progression does not mean cross-platform multiplayer.

Be cautious if you expect a polished tutorial or consistently responsive swing and putting feedback; the cited PS5 review specifically identifies those as trouble spots. EA’s updates listing includes Patch Notes 12.0 dated April 2, 2024; its Season 11 announcement calls that update the largest to that point and says it added four courses and playable golfer Jack Nicklaus. That establishes later content beyond launch, but the listing alone does not establish the game’s full update or online-service status today.
