Its tabletop-inspired checks, spell-based problem-solving and branching conversations make it less a deduction puzzle than a roleplaying mystery: you build a character, then see how that character handles the case and the city’s election-week politics.
What kind of RPG is Esoteric Ebb?
Developer Christoffer Bodegård describes Esoteric Ebb as a “Disco-like,” but treats that label as shorthand rather than a strict genre. He calls it a CRPG, while acknowledging that its conversation-led structure can also feel like a point-and-click adventure or choose-your-own-adventure. The game is single-player and presented from an isometric perspective.
The premise is a fantasy investigation: a tea shop has exploded during Norvik’s first election week. The political conflict is part of the story and character development, not just background scenery; the developer says choices affect the protagonist’s fate and relationships with factions. Steam’s game listing identifies Christoffer Bodegård as developer and Raw Fury as publisher.
How do checks, exploration and combat work?
Build a character for the investigation
Dice checks appear both in and out of dialogue. The developer says outcomes and difficulty can be shaped by your stats, equipment and decisions, so a conversation or obstacle is not necessarily solved through a single fixed route. Exploration and talking with people are central to making progress.
#1 Best Overall
PC Gamer’s Ted Litchfield describes the game as a detective-themed RPG rather than a deduction-first mystery. The distinction matters: the focus is on creating a character and testing that character against the case, not on expecting the player to solve every clue through pure logic. Litchfield praises the range of approaches, including spells that can help in encounters as well as with environmental problems. That is a reviewer’s assessment of the game, not a guarantee that every situation has a multitude of solutions.
Combat is part of the roleplaying system
The developer describes combat as a tactical roleplaying scenario built around spells and strategic choices. It is not presented as a loop of repeated attacks separate from the dialogue and investigation. The same emphasis on character choices and abilities carries across different kinds of challenges.

- LEARN SCIENCE: Players will interact and learn the fundamentals of ionic bonding through creating neutrally charged compounds, noble gases, charges, anions and cations, and acids and bases. Science geeks will love playing this game with their classroom, family, and friends in this fast-paced pick-and-pass card game.
- FAST PACED: Ion is a fast-paced card game for 2-7 players spanning around 20-30 minutes. Each round, players compete to build compounds using positively and negatively charged ions. Points are scored for successful compounds, Noble Gases, and achieving Goal Cards. After 3 rounds, the player with the most points wins!
- PICK AND PASS: Each player starts with a hand of 10 cards, and chooses one card to place in front of them. They then pass the rest of their hand to the player on their right, where they continue playing and passing cards until every card is used. Your goal is to match the positive and negative charges on your cards to create neutrally charged compounds, scoring points.
- SCIENTIFICALLY ACCURATE: All of Genius Games's products are peer-reviewed by a team of 20+ PhD Doctors and Scientists from around the globe. Ion also contains a Science Behind booklet, detailing how the mechanics and cards found in game relate to their real world concepts. Ion is also STEM and NGSS complaint, and was awarded the Dice Tower Seal of Approval. This game is perfect for at home learning, for use in the classroom, or adding some science to your next family game night.
- RADIOACTIVE CARD GAME: Also included is a harder difficulty which includes radioactivity. Recommended for more experience players and a party of 4+ people. This advanced game requires players to manage radioactive decay along with the radioactivity of other players. These cards score points at the end of each round, and additional points are given to the player(s) with the most decay at the end of the game. Step up your game with this challenging card game!
The game also has rest and exhaustion mechanics. The developer says players can take an eight-hour rest and face penalties for skipping sleep. The official FAQ describes these systems alongside the game’s checks and combat.
What makes its story and quests reactive?
Major quests can have multiple outcomes, and faction and dialogue routes vary with player choices. The developer says endings depend on those choices. In practice, that makes the investigation more than a sequence of clues leading to one predetermined resolution: the character you build and the way you engage with Norvik’s factions can shape where the story goes.

Reactivity is the clearest strength in PC Gamer’s review. Litchfield highlights the game’s willingness to respond to unusual solutions, character builds, spells and the order in which the player investigates. The review also praises its writing, world-building and humor, describing a roleplaying experience with political and literary interests. These are critical judgments, rather than claims that every player will respond to the tone in the same way.
What are the review’s main caveats?
PC Gamer’s March 4, 2026 review reported a cluttered interface and awkward inventory management, especially on Steam Deck and with a gamepad. The review also noted typographical errors, occasional gamepad-interface glitches, pathfinding oddities and two bugged feats in the build the reviewer played.

- Ages 13 and up
- 2 to 4 players
- Play time: 120 minutes
Those observations are tied to the review build. Litchfield explicitly said more time after launch would be needed to establish which polish problems persisted in version 1.0, so they should not be treated as a definitive account of the current experience. The review’s controller and handheld concerns are worth weighing if those are your preferred ways to play, but the available evidence does not establish that each issue remains today.
