EA’s planned Black Panther game is not coming out: EA canceled it on May 28, 2025, and closed its developer, Cliffhanger Games. The game had been announced in 2023 as a single-player action-adventure, but it never reached release.
What happened to EA’s Black Panther game?
Electronic Arts announced the project on July 10, 2023, as a game in early development. Nearly two years later, EA canceled it and shut down Cliffhanger Games, the Seattle studio created to develop it. The cancellation was reported on May 28, 2025, by VentureBeat and corroborated by Game Developer.
There is no release date or purchasable game in the cited announcement and cancellation coverage. The project was canceled before release, so it should not be described as an upcoming title.
What had EA announced?
EA’s July 10, 2023 announcement described an original, third-person, single-player action-adventure game based on Marvel’s Black Panther. The company said its newly introduced Seattle-based AAA studio, Cliffhanger Games, was developing it in collaboration with Marvel Games.
#1 Best Overall
- Inspired by the Black Panther movie, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that includes Avengers: Infinity War
- Connect Titan Hero Power FX pack to activate sounds & phrases (not included; sold separately with Titan Hero Power FX figures)
- Includes Titan Hero Power FX connection port
- Collect Titan Hero Series and Titan Hero Power FX figures (each sold separately)
- Ages 4 and up
That description records the project’s planned concept, not the feature set of a finished game. EA’s announcement did not include gameplay footage, a final title, a launch window, or a platform. Because the game was canceled, those early details do not establish what a completed release would have contained.
Why did EA cancel the project?
VentureBeat reported that EA Entertainment president Laura Miele communicated the decision to staff. Her stated aim for the company’s changes was to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” That wording was reported from her staff communication; it was not presented as a public transcript.

The reporting establishes EA’s organizational rationale, but does not give a more detailed project-specific cause for canceling this game.
Does EA still have a Marvel partnership?
Yes. EA and Marvel said their broader, multi-title, long-term collaboration would continue after the cancellation, according to GameSpot’s May 30, 2025 report. That statement does not mean the canceled game is being revived, nor does it confirm a replacement Black Panther game.
