The buyer announced a nationwide relaunch as EB Games Canada, with store, website and digital-branding changes planned over the coming months.
What happened to GameStop Canada?
On May 5, 2025, GameStop Canada announced that Stephan Tetrault had acquired Electronics Boutique Canada Inc. from GameStop Global Holdings S.A.R.L. The company said the Canadian retailer would relaunch under the EB Games Canada name. GameStop Canada’s announcement and its May 5, 2025 press release describe a Canadian business acquisition and brand change, not a sale of GameStop Corp. in its entirety.

The company said it had more than 185 stores across Canada at the time of the announcement. That is the figure GameStop Canada published in 2025, not a current independently verified store count. The release does not establish a later count.
Why is the EB Games name coming back?
GameStop had previously announced that Canadian EB Games stores and its online store would adopt the GameStop name by the end of 2021. GameStop Corp.’s July 28, 2021 announcement documented that earlier change. The 2025 acquisition announcement reversed the Canadian retailer’s branding direction by proposing a return to EB Games Canada.

The new owner, Stephan Tetrault, described the relaunch as a way to bring back something Canadians loved. Jim Tyo, identified in the release as GameStop Canada’s president, said the ambition was to make EB Games Canada a hub for gaming and fandom culture. These are the company’s stated rationale and aspiration, not independent evidence of customer sentiment or achieved results. The May 2025 release also said the retailer planned in-store events, expanded product lines, deeper integration with pop-culture brands and a focus on Canadian customers.
What changes were announced, and what is confirmed?
The company described a transition over the coming months, including updated store signs, a redesigned website and new branding across digital and social platforms. These were announced rollout plans; the release does not confirm that every store or online property completed the change on a particular date. The announcement also does not establish that each planned event or product initiative was subsequently implemented.

What does the acquisition mean for customers?
In its transition announcement, the company said day-to-day business would continue as normal and that preorders, gift cards and products covered by protection plans would continue during the transition. These are the company’s assurances at the time of the announcement, not a resolution of every individual order, claim or later policy change. For a specific preorder, card balance or protection-plan question, check the retailer’s current terms and contact customer service with the relevant account or transaction details. The customer-continuity statements appear in the company announcement.
A historical FAQ from the 2021 rebrand said Canadian policies remained distinct from U.S. policies, EB Games gift cards would continue to work, and closed stores would not reopen. That FAQ refers to the earlier transition and should not be treated as a statement of current policies. The historical FAQ is useful only as context for the 2021 change.
