This walkthrough follows the essential route, explains the optional objectives, and separates confirmed story effects from choices whose wider consequences have not been established.

When “Echoes of Silenced Bells” begins
The quest follows “Smoke and Ashes.” After that quest, meet Anca near the Old Inn or at the Laslea exit and travel with her toward St. Tyna’s Convent. Guides place “Echoes of Silenced Bells” in slightly different categories: some call it a side quest in Anca’s personal storyline, while others list it among the early main-story objectives. For progression purposes, the distinction does not change the route. It is the convent mission that moves Anca toward the library and opens the catacomb search for the forbidden books.
At the convent, an encounter with an undead, or zombified, nun introduces the immediate problem. The courtyard is not simply a fight that must be cleared by force. You need to create a safe passage for Anca, and the game provides two documented solutions. Decide which one you want before spending time on optional chapel or curse actions, because those activities can change how many quest segments you use.

How to get through the convent courtyard
Both routes eventually let you reunite with Anca and continue to the library. The sources do not establish a measured difficulty or time advantage for either route, so choose according to the kind of interaction you prefer rather than expecting a guaranteed speedrun shortcut.

Route A: use the soldiers and the Relic of St. Tyna
- Go through the infirmary. Use the infirmary route to reach Brencis’ soldiers. Speak with them so the soldier-related courtyard path becomes available.
- Search the groundskeeper’s shed. The keys needed for the next part are in the shed. If you cannot open the relevant door in the sacristy, return to the groundskeeper’s area and check that you collected the keys rather than merely passing through it.
- Unlock the sacristy. Take the keys to the sacristy and open it. The Relic of St. Tyna is inside.
- Retrieve the relic. Collect the Relic of St. Tyna, then return to the courtyard route associated with the soldiers. The relic is the item that distinguishes this solution from the bell method.
- Rejoin Anca. Once the route is safe, meet Anca again and continue toward the library. Do not leave the convent without checking the western ladder area for the Saint’s Tibia if you want the optional later-quest item.
The key dependency in this route is easy to miss: the sacristy key is not presented as a separate reward from the soldiers. It comes from the groundskeeper’s shed. If the sacristy appears inaccessible, retrace that path before assuming the quest has stalled.
Route B: use the bell and the nuns’ routine
- Find and read the Campana Loquitur. This text records the routine that controls where the nuns move. Reading it is the reliable way to understand the bell sequence instead of treating the bell as a random interaction.
- Direct the nuns toward the soldiers. Use the bell instructions to send the nuns first in the direction of Brencis’ soldiers. This creates the first movement in the planned diversion.
- Redirect them toward the church. Continue the sequence so the nuns are directed from the soldiers toward the church. The two-stage order matters: the documented solution is soldiers first, church second.
- Cross the opened passage with Anca. When the nuns have moved according to the routine, use the cleared route to proceed. Then reunite with Anca and follow the objective toward the library.
This option avoids the relic collection as the central courtyard solution. It is still worth exploring the courtyard for the Saint’s Tibia before you depart; the tibia is a separate pickup and is not the Relic of St. Tyna.
Where the Saint’s Tibia is
The Saint’s Tibia is on a corpse below the ladder on the west side of the courtyard. Approach the western ladder, look down to the body beneath it, and loot the corpse. The item is optional for the immediate library objective, but it can be used in a later quest. Because the courtyard route can make this area feel like a place you should leave quickly, collect the tibia before following Anca out.

- Landmark: the ladder on the courtyard’s western side.
- Position: the corpse underneath the ladder, not a separate chest or sacristy container.
- Timing: pick it up before leaving the courtyard after either route.
- Purpose: a later quest use, rather than a requirement for getting Anca to the library.
How to get Anca safely to the library
After the courtyard passage is open, rejoin Anca and follow her toward the library. The objective is not complete when the courtyard is clear; the library and catacombs sequence is the second half of the quest.
- Meet Anca after the diversion. Confirm that she has rejoined you before moving on. If she is still waiting at the courtyard objective, return to the route interaction and finish it rather than running ahead.
- Enter the library with Anca. Follow her to the library at St. Tyna’s Convent.
- Move the bookcase. The bookcase is the transition into the hidden route. Interact with it when the objective points you toward the library’s concealed passage.
- Enter the catacombs. Search the catacombs for the forbidden books. This is a progression search, not a reason to return to the courtyard for another key.
- Prepare for Leonica. The catacomb search leads to Leonica and a boss encounter. Make sure your healing supplies, equipment and combat resources are ready before committing to the deepest part of the search.
- Defeat Leonica. Finish the encounter, then continue to the final conversation and notes decision.
The catacombs are therefore part of the required conclusion, not an optional detour added after the library. If your objective still says to find the forbidden books, the next meaningful destination is below the library and the next major obstacle is Leonica.
What to do about Leonica and the forbidden books
Before entering the boss encounter
The available walkthroughs identify Leonica as the boss at the end of the forbidden-books search but do not establish a universal build, damage threshold or attack pattern. Use the preparation that fits your character rather than following an invented checklist of required weapons. Heal before the confrontation, spend or organize resources you would otherwise lose while exploring, and make a manual save if your game version allows it.

After the fight
Once Leonica is defeated, finish the interaction that follows and resolve the notes choice. The notes decision is part of the quest’s closing conversation; it is not a replacement for searching the catacombs or defeating Leonica.

Should you burn Leonica’s notes?
Choose the notes option that matches your role-play preference. PC Gamer reports that the earlier timed choice does not affect romancing Anca, and that neither of the later notes options changes the Anca romance. That is the confirmed relationship information. The available guides do not establish every possible downstream narrative consequence, so do not treat burning or keeping the notes as a proven way to unlock another ending, reward or romance result.
If your only concern is Anca’s romance, you can make the timed choice and the later notes choice without expecting either one to block that romance. If you are pursuing a different story outcome, record your save before selecting an option and judge the result in your own playthrough; broader consequences have not been documented reliably.
How long the quest takes
Quest length depends on what you count as an objective. One walkthrough breaks the quest into eight segments overall. Another distinguishes six segments for the essential path and eight when optional objectives are included. These are guide estimates, not an official timing rule or a guaranteed number of in-game days.

Use six as the planning figure only if you are following the essential route and skipping the optional chapel and curse objectives. If you want the Saint’s Tibia or other exploration pickups, allow additional play time even though the guides’ eight-segment estimate specifically refers to the optional objectives they list.

Optional chapel and curse objectives
The chapel and curse actions are not required to establish the library route, according to the distinction between essential and optional segments. They are worthwhile only if you want the extra objectives or are completing the convent area thoroughly. Because the guides do not provide a measured time or a unique reward table for each optional action, avoid treating them as mandatory steps or assuming that one route is mechanically superior.
- Complete them after you understand the main courtyard route, so an optional interaction does not obscure the objective to get Anca to the library.
- Count them toward the eight-segment estimate rather than the six-segment essential estimate.
- Keep the Saint’s Tibia separate in your checklist; it is a later-quest item found under the western ladder, not one of the chapel or curse actions.
Common problems and fixes
The sacristy will not open
Check the groundskeeper’s shed. The route requires keys found there before the sacristy can be opened. Return to the shed, search its accessible areas, and then try the sacristy again.
The bell route seems to do nothing
Read the Campana Loquitur first and follow the order recorded there: direct the nuns toward the soldiers, then toward the church. Ringing or using the bell without completing that sequence does not reproduce the documented diversion.
I cannot find the Saint’s Tibia
Go to the west side of the courtyard and look below the ladder. The item is on a corpse beneath it, not on the ladder or in the sacristy.

Anca has not moved to the next objective
Return to the courtyard interaction you selected and verify that the route is fully resolved. Then locate Anca and trigger the reunion before heading to the library. The escort objective continues only after the safe passage has been established.
The library objective is complete, but I do not know where to go
Move the bookcase in the library. The catacombs behind this progression point contain the forbidden books and lead to Leonica.
I am worried that my notes choice ruined the romance
According to PC Gamer’s walkthrough, neither the initial timed choice nor either later notes option affects romancing Anca. That source does not verify every other narrative consequence, so separate romance concerns from broader story experimentation.
Recommended completion checklist
- Finish “Smoke and Ashes.”
- Meet Anca near the Old Inn or Laslea exit and travel to St. Tyna’s Convent.
- Choose either the soldiers-and-relic route or the bell-and-routine route.
- If using the relic route, obtain the groundskeeper’s-shed keys and retrieve the Relic of St. Tyna from the sacristy.
- If using the bell route, read the Campana Loquitur and direct the nuns to the soldiers, then to the church.
- Loot the corpse beneath the western ladder for the Saint’s Tibia.
- Rejoin Anca and escort her to the library.
- Move the bookcase and enter the catacombs.
- Find the forbidden books and defeat Leonica.
- Resolve the notes choice and finish the conversation.
Build or patch differences can alter exact prompts and interaction timing. If a door, objective marker or dialogue option differs in your installed version, use the named landmarks and sequence above rather than assuming the quest has changed permanently.
