Edge caching stores eligible WordPress responses at CDN data centers close to visitors. Static files such as images, stylesheets and JavaScript are usually cacheable automatically; full HTML pages require an explicit, WordPress-aware policy. A safe deployment caches only genuinely public GET/HEAD responses, bypasses logged-in and transactional traffic, and connects publishing events to cache purges.

What edge caching means for a WordPress site
A normal WordPress request travels from a visitor to your origin server, where PHP loads WordPress, runs plugins and queries the database before returning HTML. Edge caching lets a content delivery network (CDN) keep a copy of an eligible response in many geographically distributed data centers. A visitor can then receive that copy from a nearby location instead of waiting for the origin to generate the page again.

Cloudflare describes its CDN this way: “Cloudflare speeds up your website by caching content across globally distributed data centers.” The practical result is fewer origin requests and less repeated PHP and database work. The CDN does not make every request cacheable, however. It decides whether to serve a stored object, fetch a fresh response, or skip caching entirely according to method, status code, path, cookies, headers, query strings and cache rules.
Static assets and HTML follow different defaults
Images, CSS, JavaScript, fonts and other static assets are commonly cached under a CDN provider’s default behavior. Dynamic HTML is different. Cloudflare’s default configuration does not cache HTML pages; you must use a product such as Automatic Platform Optimization (APO) for WordPress or create Cache Rules that explicitly make selected HTML responses eligible.

That distinction matters because a public article and a personal account page may share the same hostname while requiring opposite treatment. A public post can be identical for thousands of anonymous visitors. A cart, account dashboard or administrator screen contains user-specific or state-changing data and must not be placed in a shared cache.
How a cached WordPress request is processed
- DNS and proxying: The WordPress hostname resolves through the CDN, with proxying enabled. The origin server remains online and reachable by the CDN.
- Eligibility checks: The edge evaluates the HTTP method, URL path, query string, request headers, cookies and any matching cache rules.
- Cache lookup: If the request is eligible, the edge calculates a cache key and looks for a stored object in the relevant data center or an upstream tier.
- Origin fetch on a miss: If no usable object exists, the CDN requests the page from WordPress, evaluates the response and stores it when the response is cacheable.
- Delivery: The edge returns the response to the visitor and records a status such as
HITorMISSin its headers.
Cloudflare APO documents stricter eligibility for WordPress HTML: the request must use GET or HEAD, return a 200 HTML response, include a permitting cf-edge-cache header, avoid bypass cookies and risky headers, match an allowed path and use supported query-string behavior. These checks prevent an apparently public URL from accidentally sharing private state.
When WordPress HTML should and should not be cached
Good candidates for shared edge caching
- Published posts and pages that display the same content to anonymous visitors.
- Public category, tag and author archives when they do not expose private membership data.
- Public landing pages and documentation pages with deterministic output.
- GET or HEAD responses that return a successful 200 HTML document and do not set a user-specific cookie.
Requests that should bypass the shared cache
/wp-admin/, login screens and authentication callbacks.- Checkout, cart, account, order and other commerce paths.
- Feeds, previews, search results and cron endpoints when output depends on request state.
- REST, XML-RPC and other API endpoints unless you have deliberately designed a cache policy for them.
- Requests from logged-in users, administrators or users carrying session, comment or commerce cookies.
- Responses that set a cookie, send private or no-store cache directives, or otherwise ask intermediaries not to reuse the response.
- Requests with headers that explicitly request no-cache behavior.
Cloudflare notes that its default behavior does not cache responses containing Set-Cookie. Treat that as a safety signal rather than something to override casually. If a plugin adds a cookie to an otherwise public page, investigate the plugin’s purpose before allowing the page into a shared cache.
Cloudflare APO versus manual Cache Rules
There are two common implementation paths on Cloudflare. APO is WordPress-aware and is designed to automate HTML caching and update handling. Manual Cache Rules expose more individual controls and are useful when your site has unusual URL structures, multiple applications or strict cache-key requirements.
| Capability | Cloudflare APO for WordPress | Manual Cache Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install and connect the WordPress plugin, then enable the service; fewer individual rules are required. | Create cache eligibility, bypass and TTL rules yourself; setup takes more planning. |
| WordPress awareness | Designed to recognize WordPress publishing events and common private-user conditions. | Rules are generic CDN logic; you must model every relevant path, cookie and header. |
| Cache-key control | Less granular than a fully custom policy. | Explicit control over selected query strings, headers, cookies and other key inputs, subject to the features available on your plan. |
| TTL control | Uses the product’s WordPress-oriented behavior with configurable CDN settings where available. | Set Edge TTL and Browser Cache TTL independently when your plan and rule configuration support them. |
| Purge automation | The plugin can notify the edge when WordPress content is published or changed. | Connect your deployment or editorial workflow to purge requests, or purge manually after changes. |
| Debugging | Convenient defaults, but less visibility into every decision than a hand-built policy. | More transparent rule matching and cache-key behavior, provided you document the rules. |
| Plan requirements | Availability and included features depend on the current Cloudflare plan and product terms. | Available controls and limits vary by Cloudflare plan; verify the current account requirements before designing around a feature. |
APO is usually the shorter route for a conventional WordPress publication. Manual rules are preferable when you need separate policies for several applications, unusual cookies, language variants or a tightly controlled query-string key. Do not enable both approaches without understanding which rule wins; overlapping policies can make a page appear unpredictable.

Safe setup: a production sequence
1. Put the hostname behind the CDN
- In the CDN dashboard, add the exact WordPress hostname you intend to accelerate.
- Enable proxying for that DNS record and keep the origin address configured correctly.
- Open the site directly through the public hostname and confirm that the origin still serves the home page, media and administration area.
- Record the current response headers and cookie behavior. They provide a baseline for later troubleshooting.
Do not start by caching HTML. First establish that DNS, TLS, origin connectivity and static assets work through the proxy.

Allow images, CSS, JavaScript and fonts to use the CDN’s normal static caching behavior. Version filenames when deploying changes, for example by generating app.2026-10-15.css rather than reusing an unchanged filename. A new URL avoids waiting for an old object’s TTL to expire. This asset strategy is separate from the decision to cache WordPress HTML.
3. Choose APO or a narrowly scoped HTML rule
For APO, install the official WordPress plugin, authenticate it with the relevant Cloudflare zone and enable the optimization features required by your account. The plugin is intended to let you manage WordPress normally while it handles edge HTML and publishing notifications.
For manual caching, create a rule that makes only selected GET and HEAD HTML responses eligible. Scope the rule to the public host and paths you understand. Set an Edge TTL: Cloudflare defines this as the maximum time an asset remains fresh or available from edge cache. Keep the first TTL conservative while you validate publishing and bypass behavior. Configure Browser Cache TTL separately if you want browsers and the CDN to retain objects for different periods.
4. Add bypass rules before the cache-allow rule
Place exclusions ahead of any broad “cache everything” behavior. Bypass the administrative, authentication, transactional, preview, feed, search and API paths listed earlier. Add cookie-based bypasses for logged-in sessions, comment authors, carts, checkout sessions and any membership or personalization cookie used by your plugins. Also bypass requests carrying a no-cache directive and responses that set cookies.

Query strings need an explicit policy. Tracking parameters can create many effectively identical cache keys; removing every query string can be dangerous when a parameter changes page content. Keep only parameters that genuinely select a public representation, and bypass or normalize the rest according to your application’s behavior.
5. Connect publishing to purges
A purge removes stored objects. The next request at each data center repopulates the object with a MISS; subsequent requests can return HIT. Cloudflare’s documentation describes this sequence explicitly. Configure the WordPress integration or your deployment process to purge affected URLs when posts, pages, navigation, widgets or theme assets change.
Use targeted URL purges when possible. Purging the entire zone is simpler but causes every public object to be rebuilt, increasing origin load and producing misses for visitors immediately after publication.
6. Test anonymously and while authenticated
- Open a published URL in a private browser window with no WordPress cookies.
- Inspect the response headers and page content. Confirm the page is the intended public version.
- Request the same URL again from the same edge location. A first request may be
MISS; a later request should be eligible forHITif the object was stored. - Log in as a normal user and request the URL. Confirm that private toolbar elements, account data and user-specific content are not replaced by the anonymous copy.
- Exercise cart, checkout, account, preview, search, feed, API and administrator URLs. They should be bypassed or reported as
DYNAMIC, not shared as public HTML. - Publish a small content change, verify the purge, then repeat the anonymous test to confirm that the updated page replaces the old object.
Understanding HIT, MISS, BYPASS and DYNAMIC
| Status | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
HIT |
The edge served an object already stored for that cache key. | Check that the body is public and current; a HIT is not proof that the configuration is safe. |
MISS |
The request was eligible, but the edge had no usable object and fetched one from the origin. | Usually normal after a purge, expiration or first visit. Repeat the request to see whether it becomes a HIT. |
BYPASS |
The request or response instructed the CDN not to use shared cache, often because of cookies, Set-Cookie, cache-control directives or a matching bypass rule. |
Inspect cookies, response headers and rule order. Do not remove the bypass until you know the data is public. |
DYNAMIC |
The request was considered ineligible before a cache lookup, commonly because of its method, a bypass rule or Development Mode. | Check the HTTP method, URL path, Development Mode setting and eligibility conditions. |
These labels are diagnostic signals, not interchangeable performance scores. A MISS can be the correct result immediately after publication, while a HIT on a personalized page is a configuration defect that requires urgent correction.

Edge TTL
Edge TTL controls how long the CDN may keep an object fresh or available at its data centers. A longer value reduces origin work but increases the time an unpurged edit can remain visible. A shorter value limits staleness but causes more origin fetches. Set the value according to how often the site changes and how damaging stale content would be.

Browser Cache TTL
Browser Cache TTL governs a visitor’s local browser, not only the CDN. A browser can continue displaying an old response even after the edge has been purged if the browser’s own cache policy allows it. Use versioned asset URLs for files that change during deployments, and choose HTML browser caching conservatively when editors need immediate visibility.
Tiered cache
Cloudflare’s tiered-cache option lets one edge tier obtain an object from another designated tier instead of every location contacting the origin independently. It can reduce duplicate origin fetches on globally distributed traffic, but it does not change your privacy rules, cache key or purge obligations.
Cache keys, cookies and query strings
A cache key identifies which requests may share one stored response. If the key ignores a parameter that changes the page, visitors can receive the wrong representation. If it includes every tracking parameter, the CDN may create a separate object for each URL variant and deliver few hits.

Never vary public HTML on a cookie merely because a plugin sets one without documenting why.
- Language and device variants: If your site serves different public HTML by language or device, include the selecting signal in the key or use separate paths. Otherwise, bypass HTML caching for that response.
- Query strings: Preserve parameters that alter public content; normalize or exclude analytics parameters only when you have confirmed they do not alter output.
- Headers: A header that changes representation, such as a negotiated format or authorization header, must be part of the variation policy or trigger a bypass.
Common failure modes and fixes
Every page reports DYNAMIC
Confirm that you are testing GET or HEAD, not POST. Check whether Development Mode is enabled, whether a bypass rule matches the path or cookie, and whether your HTML cache rule actually applies to the hostname and response type. A 3xx, 4xx or 5xx response will not meet the documented APO 200-HTML eligibility condition.
Pages report BYPASS unexpectedly
Inspect request cookies and response headers for Set-Cookie, private, no-store or an explicit no-cache instruction. Identify the plugin or rule adding the cookie. If the cookie represents a session or personalization state, retain the bypass. If it is unnecessary on public pages, fix the application behavior rather than weakening the CDN safety rule blindly.

A MISS appears after every purge
This is expected for the first request at an edge location after an object is removed. The next request repopulates that location and returns MISS; later eligible requests can return HIT. If misses continue, compare the cache key, query strings, cookies and TTL, and check whether requests are reaching different data centers.
Visitors see old content after publishing
Verify that the publishing event reaches the CDN and that the affected URL was purged. Check for a long Browser Cache TTL, a service-worker cache or an intermediate proxy outside the CDN. Confirm that the page being tested is the same hostname and query-string variant that was purged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPersonalized content appears in an anonymous response
Treat this as a security incident. Purge the affected URLs immediately, disable HTML edge caching while investigating, and review cache keys, cookies, authorization headers, path rules and plugin-generated Set-Cookie responses. Re-enable caching only after authenticated and anonymous tests show separate behavior.
Using Amazon CloudFront instead
Amazon CloudFront is another global edge-distribution service. AWS’s 2015-07-07 white paper describes WordPress integrations in which plugins add CloudFront support. CloudFront can suit a team already operating its DNS, certificates, deployment and observability in AWS. The same WordPress safeguards still apply: cache public GET/HEAD HTML only, bypass sessions and transactions, define cache and origin request policies deliberately, and purge or version content after publication. Moving to a different CDN does not remove the need to model cookies, query strings and private paths.
Operational checklist before enabling HTML caching
- The WordPress hostname is proxied and the origin is reachable through the CDN.
- Static assets work with the provider’s default caching behavior.
- You have selected APO or documented manual Cache Rules, including Edge TTL and Browser Cache TTL choices.
- Administrative, authentication, commerce, preview, feed, search, cron and API paths bypass shared cache where appropriate.
- Logged-in, comment, session and commerce cookies trigger bypass.
- Responses with
Set-Cookieor private/no-store directives are not shared. - Query-string and cache-key behavior is documented for every public HTML variant.
- Publishing events purge affected URLs.
- Anonymous, authenticated, administrative and transactional tests have been completed.
- You know how to disable the HTML rule and purge objects if a defect appears.
What edge caching can and cannot do
Edge caching can serve repeatable public HTML from a nearby CDN location, reduce repeated origin generation and make cache behavior visible through response headers. It cannot safely make personalized pages public, repair slow database queries, replace image optimization, or guarantee that an editor’s change appears instantly without a purge and browser-cache policy.
The safest WordPress deployment treats cacheability as a property of each response, not of the entire website. Start with public, stable pages; keep private and state-changing requests out; connect publishing to purges; and use HIT, MISS, BYPASS and DYNAMIC to investigate decisions rather than to judge speed in isolation.
