efslsaext.dll Errors: Check Windows Before Repairing the App

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this quick diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program or game shows the error
  • Whether it happens when Windows starts or only when one application opens
  • Whether the message says missing, not found, could not be loaded, or not designed to run on Windows
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the problem began after a Windows update, antivirus detection, cleanup utility, malware incident, or disk problem

efslsaext.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Encrypting File System and Local Security Authority. If an application names it, that does not prove the application installed the file or that reinstalling the application alone will repair Windows.

What efslsaext.dll is

The file is described as “LSA extension for EFS.” EFS is Windows’ Encrypting File System, which provides file-level encryption on NTFS. Microsoft documentation and Windows file inventories place the file in:

%SystemRoot%System32efslsaext.dll

On most Windows installations, %SystemRoot% is C:Windows.

Microsoft servicing records list efslsaext.dll alongside other EFS components, including efscore.dll and efssvc.dll. Separate 32-bit and 64-bit builds exist, and the version and file size vary between Windows releases and update levels. A historical 64-bit listing shows version 10.0.10586.0 at approximately 0.11 MB, but that is not a universal current version.

This is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, game runtime, or ordinary third-party application DLL. Windows normally services it through Windows Update, the Windows component store, and built-in repair tools.

What the error messages mean

These messages usually indicate that Windows or the calling program could not load the required module:

  • “The program can’t start because efslsaext.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “efslsaext.dll could not be found.”
  • “Failed to load efslsaext.dll.”
  • “The file efslsaext.dll is missing or corrupt.”
  • “This application has failed to start because efslsaext.dll was not found.”
  • “The application or DLL is not a valid Windows image.”
  • “The application or DLL is not designed to run on Windows.”

The first group commonly points to a missing, deleted, quarantined, or damaged file. “Not designed to run on Windows” can also mean that the file has the wrong architecture, belongs to another Windows build, or has a damaged dependency. If the file exists in System32, the problem may be broader component-store corruption or an invalid loading path.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Because this is a Windows component, start with Windows servicing rather than downloading a replacement.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install every available update.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on doing so.
  7. Try the affected application again.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. If Windows Update displays an error or repeatedly rolls back an update, repair the component store before trying the application again.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for the operation to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for some time. A message saying the restore operation completed successfully indicates that DISM finished its repair.

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the affected program.

  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

SFC commonly reports one of these outcomes:

  • ** did not find any integrity violations:** Windows system files were not currently detected as corrupt.
  • found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the application.
  • found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result does not change, continue to the escalation steps below.

If DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that matches your installed Windows edition and build. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer.

Repeating SFC and DISM while guessing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair features are handled by the full version; it is optional, and built-in Windows repair remains the correct first step.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a system file after a false detection or following an actual malware incident. Do not restore the file simply because an application requests it.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections for efslsaext.dll.
  7. Expand a detection to inspect its location and reason.

If the detected file is located at the normal Windows path and its Microsoft signature checks out, Windows Security may provide Restore or Allow on device. Use those actions only when you have established that the detection is false. Then run DISM and SFC.

If the file was found in a game folder, a temporary directory, or an unfamiliar user-writable location, do not restore it. Run a full scan instead. If malware is suspected, use Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first because the computer will restart.

Do not add an antivirus exclusion before investigating. A missing system file after a malware incident may be a symptom of unauthorized modification rather than the original problem.

Fix 4: Verify the path, signature, and architecture

A genuine Windows copy should normally be in C:WindowsSystem32, or the equivalent %SystemRoot%System32 path.

To inspect it:

  1. Press Win+E.
  2. Enter %SystemRoot%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Find efslsaext.dll.
  4. Right-click it and choose Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  6. Select the signer and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.

You can also check the signature from an elevated PowerShell window:

Rank #3
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32efslsaext.dll"

A valid Microsoft signature and the expected Windows path are reassuring. They do not replace DISM and SFC when the file is damaged.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Check System type.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the native 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit compatibility components. Do not swap files between these folders. A 32-bit DLL cannot substitute for a 64-bit system DLL, and a file from another Windows build can be rejected or cause instability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one program reports the error, repair Windows first, then address that program.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset, if appropriate.

For a traditional desktop application, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the program, and look for Repair or Change.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Scan and repair, or equivalent function. If that fails, uninstall and reinstall the game from its official installer. This can repair an application’s own files, but it is not normally the definitive fix for a Windows component such as efslsaext.dll.

Do not assume that the application named in the error installed the DLL. Windows’ loader reports the dependency requested by the program, even when the dependency belongs to Windows.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM self-registration through DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer.

efslsaext.dll is an LSA extension, not a normal COM component. Running this command is therefore not an appropriate repair:

regsvr32 efslsaext.dll

It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean the file needs to be registered. Repair it through Windows servicing instead.

Fix 7: Check storage and file-system damage

If SFC repeatedly reports that it cannot repair files, or the problem returns after a successful repair, investigate the drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First back up important files. Then open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

chkdsk /f C:

If Windows says the volume is in use, type Y to schedule the check for the next restart, then restart the computer. Repeated file corruption can indicate a damaged file system or failing storage, so do not keep replacing system files without addressing the drive.

Fix 8: Update a driver only when evidence points to one

There is no evidence that efslsaext.dll itself is a driver DLL. Do not use Device Manager as the first repair merely because the error appeared after an update.

Use Device Manager only when a device or driver is specifically identified:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

If the issue began immediately after a clearly identified driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.

Hunting through Device Manager and guessing which of many drivers is stale can take longer than the actual repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid when the evidence points to a driver.

Never download a loose DLL from a random site

Do not download efslsaext.dll from an isolated DLL website, copy it into System32, place it beside a game executable, or take it from another computer.

That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong Windows build or architecture, and leave the component store damaged. It can also create DLL search-order risks if an unsafe copy is loaded from an application directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a Microsoft installation source instead. If an application is genuinely damaged, use its developer’s official installer or repair option.

Use System Restore when repair recently broke

If the error started after a recent software change and System Restore is enabled:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point from before the problem began.
  3. Select Scan for affected programs.
  4. Review the changes.
  5. Complete the restore and restart Windows.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers, applications, or updates. If no restore point works, use Microsoft’s repair reinstall or an in-place repair installation for the current Windows version.

FAQ

Is efslsaext.dll malware?

The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component associated with EFS and LSA. A copy in an unexpected folder, an invalid signature, or an antivirus detection requires investigation. Path and signature checks are more useful than the filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is efslsaext.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No. It is not an ordinary redistributable runtime. Installing those packages solely to obtain this file is not an appropriate repair.

Should I copy the file from SysWOW64?

No. Architecture and Windows build matter. Repair the installed Windows image instead of mixing files between System32, SysWOW64, another computer, or an application folder.

Why does a game mention a Windows DLL?

The game may request a Windows dependency while starting. The error message identifies what could not be loaded, not necessarily who installed it. Repair Windows first, then verify or reinstall the game if it is the only affected program.

What if the file exists but still will not load?

Run DISM and SFC, check the signature and path, and consider a mismatched build, dependent system-file damage, component-store corruption, or disk errors. A visible file is not proof that it is valid or loadable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is regsvr32 required?

No. This DLL is not a normal COM self-registering library, so regsvr32 is not the correct fix.

What is the safest repair order?

Install Windows updates, restart, run elevated DISM, run SFC, restart again, investigate antivirus quarantine, and then repair the one affected application. Escalate to System Restore or a Microsoft repair reinstall if those steps do not resolve the error.
