If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that ehssetup.dll is missing, the correct fix is usually to remove an obsolete Media Center startup reference rather than download the DLL.
On Windows Vista, Windows 7, and some Windows 8-era installations, the file normally belongs here:

|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11 after an upgrade | Stale Media Center startup entry | Remove the confirmed obsolete startup reference |
| Windows 7 with Media Center installed | Deleted or damaged component | Repair Windows and re-enable Media Center |
| Windows 7 N or KN | Missing media components | Install the official Windows 7 Media Feature Pack |
| Error appears only for one account | Per-user startup or profile problem | Inspect that account’s startup entries |
| Error follows antivirus activity | File quarantine | Verify Protection History before restoring anything |
| Error appears during Sysprep | Obsolete cleanup or registered component | Check Sysprep logs and repair the installation |
Check the Windows version and trigger first
Press Windows key + R, type:
winver
Press Enter and note the Windows edition and version.
Then identify when the message appears:
- During login or startup: suspect a stale RunOnce, scheduled task, or startup entry.
- When opening Windows Media Center: repair the legacy feature and Windows system files.
- After upgrading Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10: Media Center may have been removed while its startup reference remained.
- After malware cleanup or antivirus activity: check whether the file was quarantined.
- During Sysprep: inspect the Sysprep log instead of treating this as an application or game error.
- Only in one Windows account: check per-user startup settings and test another account.
Windows Media Center was associated with Windows 7’s Media Features feature. It is not an inbox component of Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows upgrade documentation identifies Media Center as removed during the upgrade to Windows 10.
Confirm the expected file path
Open File Explorer and enter this path in the address bar:
Recommended Free Tools
%WINDIR%ehome
Look for ehssetup.dll.
If the file exists there, do not copy another version over it. The error may be caused by:
- a missing dependency;
- a broken startup command;
- a damaged Windows component;
- a per-user configuration problem; or
- an obsolete reference left after an upgrade.
If the file does not exist and you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not download it manually. Media Center is no longer an inbox Windows component on those versions.
If you are using an older Windows installation that still includes Media Center, continue with the repair steps below.
Fix damaged Windows files with DISM and SFC
This is the supported repair route when ehssetup.dll belongs to an older Windows installation and the component may have been deleted or damaged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses. The commands normally use Windows Update as the repair source.
Rank #2
A successful result is a restart without the ehssetup.dll message, or a working Windows Media Center launch. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, save its details before escalating:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If Windows Update cannot provide the required repair files, Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a matching Windows installation source. Do not use an unrelated Windows version or an arbitrary downloaded folder.
Running these commands manually means waiting through scans and then determining which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show the detected repair issues in a scan; its repair actions require the full version, and it is optional. For this specific legacy component, repairing or removing the Windows Media Center reference remains the definitive path.
Re-enable Windows Media Center on Windows 7
Use this only on a Windows version that still provides Windows Media Center. It is not a Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation method.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Media Features.
- Clear Windows Media Center.
- Select OK and restart.
- Return to the same location.
- Expand Media Features again.
- Select Windows Media Center.
- Select OK and restart again.
This clears and rebuilds the optional feature registration. After the second restart, open Windows Media Center and check whether the error has disappeared.

To check the edition:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
winver
- Press Enter.
- Check whether the edition name includes N or KN.
Install the Microsoft Media Feature Pack that matches the installed Windows 7 Service Pack and system architecture. Restart after installation, then check Windows Features again.
Do not confuse this with the Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 or Windows 11 N. That package restores media technologies such as Windows Media Player support; it does not restore the old Windows Media Center application.
Remove a stale startup reference on Windows 10 or 11
If the error appears only during login and %WINDIR%ehomeehssetup.dll is absent, the most likely cause is an old startup instruction left behind after Media Center was removed.
Start with the safer interface:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry referring to
ehssetup, ehome, Media Center, or an unknown publisher. - Select the entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the message disappears, the startup reference was the trigger. Disabling it is preferable to restoring a legacy DLL that Windows 10 or Windows 11 no longer needs.
On older Windows versions, also check:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
msconfig
- Press Enter.
- Review the Startup and Services tabs for a confirmed Media Center reference.
- Disable only the entry you can identify.
A historical RunOnce entry may also invoke ehssetup.dll. Registry editing is risky, so export a key before changing it:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
regedit
- Press Enter.
- Review only entries clearly referring to
ehssetupor the obsolete Media Center command. - Right-click the relevant key or value.
- Select Export and save the backup.
- Remove only the confirmed obsolete value.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete an entire registry key simply because its name is unfamiliar. If you cannot identify the exact entry, leave the registry unchanged and use System Restore or a Windows repair process instead.

Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined a legitimate file, or malware cleanup may have removed a modified copy.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
ehssetup.dll.
Protection History is retained for a limited period, so an old quarantine event may no longer be visible.

Restore the file only if all of these conditions are met:
- it was located in
%WINDIR%ehome; - the detection is verified as a false positive;
- the Windows installation itself is trusted; and
- a current security scan shows no broader compromise.
Microsoft warns that users should allow or restore quarantined items only after verifying that they are false positives. If malware was involved, run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead of restoring an unknown copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not use Device Manager as the primary fix
ehssetup.dll is a Windows Media Center component, not a device driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it.
Use Device Manager only if the same incident also caused a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the affected hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
Do not expect a graphics, audio, chipset, or storage driver reinstall to restore ehssetup.dll.
Manually checking hardware vendors and comparing driver versions can be tedious when a wider system problem is present. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; installing updates through the full version is optional, and it does not replace repairing or removing the obsolete Media Center reference.
Why regsvr32 is normally wrong
Do not start with:
regsvr32 ehssetup.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. The historical ehssetup.dll startup command calls a named entry point, LaunchProcessInputFiles, through rundll32.exe. That is a different mechanism from COM registration.
As a result, regsvr32 may produce an error and does not restore the missing Windows feature, repair a stale startup entry, or supply a missing dependency.
What not to do
Do not download ehssetup.dll from a random DLL download site. An arbitrary copy may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or stale startup command.

- Use standard Microsoft drivers, no software to install.
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32;- an application or game folder; or
- a random Windows directory.
The expected legacy location is %WINDIR%ehome, and the correct repair source is Windows itself or matching official installation media.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not assume a 64-bit Windows installation requires a 64-bit copy of this file. Public evidence confirms the filename and legacy location but does not establish a complete architecture matrix. Also, System32 is the normal location of the 64-bit rundll32.exe on 64-bit Windows.
Use System Restore or repair installation when repair fails
Use System Restore when the issue began after a known software change, cleanup operation, or feature modification.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not delete personal files.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the installation, Media Center is still expected on that legacy Windows version, or malware changed system configuration extensively, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important files first and follow Microsoft’s repair-installation guidance for that Windows version.
FAQ
Is ehssetup.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows Media Center component in %WINDIR%ehome. A file with the same name in an unrelated folder is not automatically trustworthy. Check its location, scan the system, and do not restore a quarantined copy without verifying it.
Does Windows 11 include Windows Media Center?
No authoritative evidence indicates that Windows Media Center ships as an inbox component in Windows 10 or Windows 11. A Windows 10 or 11 startup error usually points to an obsolete reference left after an upgrade.
Should I install the Windows 10 or 11 Media Feature Pack?
Only if you use an N edition and need its supported media technologies. It should not be presented as a way to restore Windows Media Center or ehssetup.dll.
Why does Windows say “The specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The message can indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing ehssetup.dll file. DISM and SFC are safer than copying replacement DLLs.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I register ehssetup.dll with regsvr32?
Normally, no. Its historical use is through a named rundll32.exe entry point, not ordinary COM registration.
What if the error appears during Sysprep?
Inspect the Sysprep log and registered cleanup providers. Do not treat the error as a game, runtime, or driver problem. Remove only a confirmed obsolete provider and repair Windows if system components are damaged.
