Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is worth playing if you enjoy accessible real-time action, gathering materials, and watching a town grow. Its colorful 2.5D world and companion-prequel role are appealing, but repeated trips through familiar areas are the main drawback. It can introduce you to the setting before Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes; the publisher has described cross-game bonuses, but nothing established makes Rising essential preparation.
What kind of game is Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising?
505 Games describes Rising as a 2.5D action RPG with town-upgrading elements and a companion prequel to Hundred Heroes. Its story takes place in New Nevaeh after an earthquake exposes the Runebarrows beneath the frontier town. Treasure-seeking adventurer CJ, Beastman mercenary Garoo, and aspiring town leader Isha explore the ruins, gather materials, help residents, and develop local facilities. 505 Games’ announcement presents it as a smaller tale in the shared setting, rather than the main game.
It launched on May 10, 2022 for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. The publisher also announced Xbox and PC Game Pass availability at launch; that historical announcement does not establish current subscription availability. 505 Games
How do combat and progression work?
Real-time character-swapping combat
You control a party of three and swap between its members during real-time fights, chaining linked attacks. CJ uses climbing axes, Isha attacks with ranged sorcery, and Garoo brings a large sword. This is action combat—not the turn-based battle system associated with Hundred Heroes. GameSpot found the action enjoyable but easy, so players looking for demanding combat depth may find it light. Gathering and rebuilding New Nevaeh
Ruins provide materials and quests; helping residents and investing in facilities gradually develops New Nevaeh. That steady improvement gives dungeon trips a town-building payoff, but it also ties much of the game to collecting requested items and completing errands. Whether that loop feels satisfying or repetitive depends largely on how much you enjoy incremental progression.
What do reviews praise, and what do they criticize?
Critic responses highlight a trade-off rather than a universally compelling loop. Game Informer praised the 2.5D art and the game’s introduction to the wider Eiyuden setting, while criticizing repeated visits to familiar areas and material-gathering errands. GameSpot likewise describes a mission-heavy structure of main and side quests, with approachable action. Metacritic’s selected critic excerpts include both praise for combat, gathering, and charm and criticism of basic mechanics or repetitive missions; these excerpts are not a single cross-platform score or a claim that all reviewers agree.
The practical question is whether the collection loop supports or interrupts your enjoyment. If revisiting routes to fulfill requests sounds relaxing and town upgrades are motivating, the structure has a clear appeal. If you need each quest to introduce a new place or a major combat challenge, repetition is likely to be the sticking point.
Is it necessary to play before Hundred Heroes?
No. 505 Games calls Rising a companion prequel featuring “pre-war tales” and part of the shared cast. That makes it an optional way to spend more time in the setting and meet some characters, not a required entry point established by the publisher. The publisher also said that some items and choices—such as cosmetic items, equipment, trade goods, and names chosen for certain weapons and delicacies—could carry into Hundred Heroes. That describes planned cross-content; it does not show that a particular bonus is essential or that the main game requires a save from Rising. 505 Games’ announcement

Store ratings are platform-specific player feedback, not critic scores, and their totals can change. The following figures are snapshots accessed October 8, 2026:
| Store and scope | Snapshot | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam, English user reviews | 89% positive among 1,000 reviews; labeled “Very Positive” | Steam user-review sentiment, not a critic aggregate. Steam store page |
| PlayStation Store, US PS4/PS5 page | 4.41/5 from 3,095 player ratings | PlayStation says game reviews come from verified owners; this is the US storefront’s player rating. PlayStation Store page |
These numbers indicate how users rated the game on those storefronts at that time; they do not settle whether its quest structure suits you, and they should not be read as an all-platform consensus.

Who should play Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising?
- Good fit: players who like accessible action, collecting materials, upgrading a town, and spending more time in the Eiyuden setting.
- Less suitable: players who want consistently varied missions, substantial combat difficulty, or a direct substitute for the main game’s turn-based battles.
- As a prequel: play it for its own adventure or the setting and shared cast, not because the available publisher information establishes it as mandatory homework for Hundred Heroes.
