By this ranking, Malenia, Blade of Miquella is the hardest Elden Ring boss, with Promised Consort Radahn second. This list covers both the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, using an editorial comparison of mechanical complexity, damage and punish windows, aggression and tracking, arena and camera pressure, consistency under pressure, build dependence, and when the encounter appears in progression. It is a reasoned order, not an official or universal difficulty score: build, route, summons, upgrades, and DLC blessing levels can change how a fight feels.
How this ranking works
The order reflects how demanding each encounter can be across several parts of a playthrough, rather than a single damage or health statistic. A boss ranks higher when it combines hard-to-read moves, sustained pressure, limited safe openings, awkward camera or arena conditions, and a matchup that can punish many builds. Progression timing matters too: arriving underprepared can make a difficult fight feel substantially worse.

The full-game ranking published by The Escapist and updated February 24, 2026, also places Malenia first and Promised Consort Radahn second, with Messmer third and Maliketh fourth. That is useful context, not proof of consensus: lists differ in scope and judgment, and the same boss can be easier or harder depending on a player’s tools and approach. The Escapist’s 2026 ranking
Shadow of the Erdtree adds its own boss encounters and requires the Elden Ring base game, according to Bandai Namco. The expansion is not included automatically with every base-game edition. Bandai Namco’s Shadow of the Erdtree page

The 15 hardest Elden Ring bosses, ranked
1. Malenia, Blade of Miquella — base game
Malenia is the most demanding overall encounter in this ranking because her pressure asks for precise defense and careful punishment. Her ability to recover health when she lands hits makes mistakes especially costly: a poorly timed trade can undo progress even if the player survives. Her fast attacks and punishing sequences leave little room to attack carelessly.
2. Promised Consort Radahn — Shadow of the Erdtree
Promised Consort Radahn is the expansion’s most punishing matchup here, with aggressive pressure that can make it difficult to find safe openings. Ranking him second overall reflects the intensity and consistency required to respond to his attacks. DLC-only lists that put him first are making a different editorial choice, not establishing a universal result.
3. Messmer the Impaler — Shadow of the Erdtree
Messmer earns a top-three place for the demands he puts on timing and composure. His fast, forceful offense makes it important to recognize the end of an attack sequence before trying to retaliate. Rushing in after a dodge can turn a near-opening into another defensive scramble.
4. Maliketh, the Black Blade — base game
Maliketh’s threat comes from the intensity of his offense and the small margin for error once the fight accelerates. Players who struggle to track his movement or identify safe punish windows can find the encounter difficult to stabilize. His placement reflects that pressure rather than a claim that every build faces the same challenge.

Bayle is a demanding DLC fight where the scale and movement of the encounter can make positioning and visual tracking part of the challenge. Players need to manage the arena as well as the boss’s attacks, and a build that struggles to reach safe openings may have a harder time maintaining momentum.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
6. Mohg, Lord of Blood — base game
Mohg can punish players who enter without a plan for his distinctive attack sequences. The fight tests recognition and timing as much as raw damage output; trying to force attacks during an unsafe phase can quickly turn the encounter against you.
7. Rellana, Twin Moon Knight — Shadow of the Erdtree
Rellana’s sustained offense puts a premium on learning her rhythms and choosing defensive responses deliberately. The challenge is not just surviving a single move but finding a reliable moment to reset and attack without being caught by the next part of her sequence.
8. Starscourge Radahn — base game
Starscourge Radahn’s encounter asks players to manage pressure across a broad battlefield. Positioning and awareness matter alongside dodging, and the scale of the fight can make it harder to read what is happening than in a compact duel.
9. Golden Hippopotamus — Shadow of the Erdtree
The Golden Hippopotamus is difficult partly because the close quarters and camera can complicate an already forceful encounter. Den of Geek’s DLC analysis calls attention to arena size, camera management, and encounter timing as important factors. Den of Geek’s Shadow of the Erdtree boss ranking
10. Commander Gaius — Shadow of the Erdtree
Gaius can be a frustrating opponent when his movement and approach make distance difficult to manage. Players need to stay alert to how quickly he closes space and avoid treating a brief retreat as a guaranteed opening to heal or attack.

- A New Fantasy World – Journey through the Lands Between, a new fantasy world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series, and George R. R. Martin, author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Unravel the mysteries of the Elden Ring’s power. Encounter adversaries with profound backgrounds, characters with their own unique motivations for helping or hindering your progress, and fearsome creatures
- World Exploration in the Lands Between – Elden Ring features vast fantastical landscapes and shadowy, complex dungeons that are connected seamlessly. Traverse the breathtaking world on foot or on horseback, alone or online with other players, and fully immerse yourself in the grassy plains, suffocating swamps, spiraling mountains, foreboding castles and other sites of grandeur on a scale never seen before in a FromSoftware title
- Genre-Defining Gameplay – Create your character in FromSoftware’s refined action-RPG and define your playstyle by experimenting with a wide variety of weapons, magical abilities, and skills found throughout the world. Charge into battle, pick off enemies one-by-one using stealth, or even call upon allies for aid. Many options are at your disposal as you decide how to approach exploration and combat
11. Godfrey, First Elden Lord / Hoarah Loux — base game
Godfrey’s fight rewards disciplined reactions. The shift in the encounter changes the demands on the player, so a strategy that works early may need adjustment later. Staying patient and responding to the sequence in front of you matters more than trying to maintain a fixed attack rhythm.
12. Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame — Shadow of the Erdtree
Midra’s fight is a test of composure and recognition. Players who react to the overall spectacle rather than the attack cues can spend too much time recovering from avoidable hits, making it harder to establish a steady pace.
13. Fire Giant — base game
The Fire Giant’s size and the open battlefield create a different kind of challenge from a close-range duel. Keeping track of the encounter and choosing when to close the distance can be awkward, especially for players whose preferred approach depends on a stable view of the target.
14. Commander Messmer’s Impaler? — Shadow of the Erdtree
Messmer is already listed at number three; this entry is excluded from the ranking. There is no separate boss called “Commander Messmer’s Impaler.”
14. Scadutree Avatar — Shadow of the Erdtree
The Scadutree Avatar is a multi-stage encounter that asks players to keep adapting rather than assume one successful phase will finish the fight. Managing resources and recognizing when it is safe to commit become increasingly important as the encounter continues.

15. Dragonlord Placidusax — base game
Placidusax rounds out the list for the combination of movement, arena awareness, and attack timing his encounter demands. His placement is not a judgment that he is easy; rather, this ranking puts other fights higher for the pressure, consistency, or narrow punish windows they impose.

Difficulty depends on what the ranking counts. A list of Shadow of the Erdtree Remembrance bosses is not comparable one-to-one with a full-game list that includes optional base-game encounters or dungeon bosses. For example, Dot Esports’ DLC list prioritizes Remembrance bosses while also mentioning some dungeon bosses; Den of Geek highlights the Golden Hippopotamus’s camera and arena pressures. Those choices reflect different scopes and criteria. Dot Esports’ Shadow of the Erdtree boss ranking
- Build and equipment: Weapon upgrades, survivability, and talismans can make an encounter more manageable.
- Summons: Spirit Ashes can change how much pressure the player must handle directly; using them is a valid way to approach the game, not a failure to meet a difficulty standard.
- Expansion progression: DLC blessing levels affect the challenge in Shadow of the Erdtree, so comparing attempts without noting that context can be misleading.
- Route and timing: Meeting a boss earlier or later in progression changes the tools and preparation available.
These factors are also among those noted in The Escapist’s ranking recap. A sensible comparison therefore asks not only “Which boss hits hardest?” but also how often a player can find a safe opening, how reliably they can read the fight, and what preparation the encounter assumes.
How to use this list
Use the ranking as a guide to likely friction, not as a measure of your skill. If a boss is giving you trouble, identify what is causing it: missed timing, poor visibility, insufficient survivability, or a build that struggles to exploit openings. Adjusting equipment, improving upgrades, using a Spirit Ash, or—within the expansion—earning more blessing levels can reduce the challenge without changing the boss’s place in this editorial order.
Bandai Namco has published a statistic of more than 8.9 billion causes of death, but its accessible page text does not identify boss-specific attempt counts. That figure cannot substantiate a numerical ranking of these encounters. Bandai Namco Europe’s Elden Ring statistics page
