Elden Ring Beginner Build Guide: Choose a Class, Stats, and Weapon

A practical first-playthrough guide to Elden Ring classes, Vigor and other stats, weapon choice, scaling, FP, and equipment load.

For a forgiving first melee run in Elden Ring, start as a Vagabond, raise Vigor early, and build around one weapon whose requirements and moveset suit you. That is a practical default—not a universally best build. Choose Warrior for a more aggressive dual-wielding start, Astrologer for sorceries, or Prophet for incantations. Your starting class shapes your opening equipment and stats, but it does not lock your character into that playstyle.

This guide focuses on the decisions that matter most to a first-time player: choosing an opening class, deciding what to level, keeping a useful roll, and selecting a weapon to support consistently. The class descriptions and edition caveats are based on Bandai Namco’s overview and official class page; the beginner Vagabond recommendation is also made by Mobalytics’ beginner guide.

What makes a good beginner build?

A beginner build is not a secret combination of class, stats, and gear that removes the game’s difficulty. It is a setup that gives you room to learn while keeping your choices coherent: enough health to survive mistakes, a weapon you can use reliably, and a focused set of stats that supports that weapon or your preferred spells.

For many new players, the simplest starting plan is to choose Vagabond, use its shield and melee equipment while learning enemy patterns, raise Vigor early, and put later damage points into the attributes your main weapon actually uses. A player who wants a different rhythm can make a sound start with another class. Bandai Namco describes class as a starting point rather than a limitation: each origin begins with its own equipment and stats, but it does not dictate the character’s eventual direction.

Think of the build as a series of decisions, not a one-time test. First choose the way you want to fight; then meet the requirements for useful equipment; after that, improve survivability and the attributes that make that equipment work. If a setup is uncomfortable, the goal is to identify the constraint—health, stamina, load, FP, or damage scaling—instead of scattering points across every stat.

Which starting class should a beginner choose?

Pick the class whose opening tools resemble the way you want to play in the early game. The class changes your starting package, not the rules of what your character can become. The official class page frames origins as distinct starting identities, while Bandai Namco’s overview explicitly says that a class is never a limitation.

Vagabond: forgiving melee default

Vagabond is the most straightforward recommendation for a player who wants to learn through close-range combat. Mobalytics highlights its larger health pool, shield, armor, two weapons, and flexible stats, and recommends it for beginners. Those features can make early mistakes less punishing and let you try a defensive approach while learning when to block, attack, or reposition. This is a third-party guide’s practical recommendation, not a game rule or proof that Vagabond is best for every player.

Choose Vagabond if you want a shield available from the start and expect to spend much of your time using melee weapons. Its opening package can support a relatively direct progression: build health, learn the weapon’s reach and timing, then prioritize the attributes your chosen weapon rewards.

Warrior: more aggressive dual-wielding start

Warrior is a reasonable fit if you are drawn to an aggressive dual-wielding style rather than a shield-first approach. The appeal is the opening combat direction, not a permanent commitment: you can change the kinds of equipment and stats you pursue as the character develops. Pick it because you want that faster, more attack-focused feel, not because a starting class guarantees an easier run.

Astrologer: sorcery-oriented opening

Astrologer is the natural starting option if you want to explore Intelligence-oriented sorceries and attack from range. A spell-focused character still needs to manage survival and FP, the resource used by spells and other abilities. It is not a way to avoid learning encounters; it shifts part of your decision-making toward range, resource use, and when to spend FP.

Prophet: incantation-oriented opening

Prophet suits a player interested in Faith-oriented incantations. Incantations include healing and buffs as well as other effects, so a Faith direction need not mean giving up melee. Consider it if you want spells to complement your weapon or you want to build around incantations, rather than selecting it solely because the word “healing” sounds like a guarantee of safety.

Choose by preferred combat rhythm

  • Want a forgiving close-range start? Vagabond is the practical default: it begins with a shield, armor, weapons, and the larger health pool highlighted by Mobalytics.
  • Want an aggressive dual-wielding feel? Warrior is a fitting opening package.
  • Want ranged sorceries? Astrologer points toward Intelligence.
  • Want Faith-based incantations? Prophet is the corresponding starting direction.

These are recommendations about how to begin, not rigid build prescriptions. Your class is not a character lock, and the evidence does not establish a universally strongest beginner class.

What stats should a new player focus on?

Do not level every damage attribute just because different weapons use different stats. A focused character is easier to develop: keep yourself alive, meet the requirements for your chosen equipment, and then invest in the attributes that improve that equipment or the spells you actually cast. Bandai Namco’s official stats guide explains the role of the main attributes and identifies Vigor as one of the most important early stats.

  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.

Vigor: make mistakes survivable

Vigor increases HP. More health gives a new player more room to survive a missed dodge, a mistimed attack, or an unfamiliar enemy move. Bandai Namco’s official explanation puts it plainly: “Vigor (VGR) is our health (HP) which determines how many hits you can take before dying.” The publisher identifies Vigor as one of the most important stats to raise early.

Use 40 Vigor as a broad progression milestone, not a requirement to reach in your first few hours. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s 2023 advanced-stats guide gives the following health values: 40 Vigor provides 1,450 Health, 60 provides 1,900, and 99 provides 2,100. The increasing stat investment yields smaller gains at the higher end, which is why 40 is a useful general target and why 60 can be worth considering once the rest of your build’s needs are covered.

Vigor Health in Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s 2023 guide How to use the figure
40 1,450 A broad progression milestone, not a first-hour target.
60 1,900 A possible later investment after other build needs are met.
99 2,100 Shows the diminishing returns at the top end in that guide’s figures.

These figures are the guide’s stated values, not a promise that every character should reach a particular Vigor level on a fixed schedule.

Strength and Dexterity: follow the weapon

Meet a weapon’s attribute requirements before treating it as the foundation of your build. After that, invest in the stats reflected by its scaling. Strength commonly supports heavier, slower weapons and stance damage; Dexterity commonly supports faster or ranged weapons. These are broad tendencies, not a rule that every weapon with a particular feel scales only with one attribute.

Look at the weapon’s displayed requirements and scaling rather than assuming its category tells the whole story. The weapon’s upgrade level affects scaling bonuses, and Ashes of War can modify scaling grades. Two-handing also grants a Strength bonus for scaling. These details are covered in Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s advanced-stats guide. The practical consequence is that weapon choice and stat investment belong together: a weapon you like using gives you a reason to focus your damage points.

Mind: invest when you spend FP often

Mind governs FP. Spells, weapon skills, and spirit summons use FP, so a character that uses those tools frequently has more reason to invest in Mind than a straightforward melee character that rarely uses them. If you find yourself regularly running short while using your intended abilities, Mind is a stat to consider; if you seldom use FP, it may not be a priority over health, equipment requirements, or your main damage stat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Endurance: solve stamina or load problems

Endurance governs stamina and equipment load. Stamina affects how much you can do before needing to recover, while equipment load determines the roll category associated with your currently equipped weight. If your attacks, blocks, or movement leave you short on stamina, or your equipped gear pushes you into a heavy roll, Endurance may address a real constraint.

Bandai Namco’s 2023 guide defines 30–69.9% of maximum equipment weight as a normal or medium roll and 70–99.9% as a heavy roll. For a medium roll or faster, keep total equipped weight at 69.9% or less of maximum. A heavier weapon or armor choice is not automatically a mistake, but it has a load cost; account for that before equipping more weight than your current load allows.

Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane: invest for a specific reason

Intelligence supports sorceries, while Faith supports incantations, including healing and buffs. Arcane contributes to certain requirements, item discovery, and status buildup. Treat these as build choices rather than stats every beginner needs to raise. Add them when they enable the spells, weapon requirements, or status strategy you have decided to use.

The core rule is to avoid spreading damage points across Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane without a plan. Keep the character’s current job clear: what weapon or spells are you building around, and which attribute helps those tools? That question is more useful than trying to raise everything at once.

How to choose a weapon and build around it

There is no universally strongest beginner weapon established by these sources. A good first weapon is one you can use comfortably and support with your stats. Try its attacks, notice whether its speed and reach suit your reactions, and check its displayed attribute requirements before committing to it as your main choice.

Test the moveset, not just the damage number

A weapon’s moveset determines how its attacks feel to use. A slower weapon may suit a player who prefers deliberate, heavier hits and stance pressure; a faster weapon may suit someone who wants quick attacks or the possibility of status effects. Choose a style you can execute reliably rather than judging only by a headline damage value. Strength commonly supports heavier, slower weapons and stance damage, while Dexterity commonly supports faster or ranged choices, but the weapon’s own scaling is the more precise guide.

Two-handing is another option to test. Bandai Namco’s beginner guide explains that two-handing increases weapon power and makes it easier to break an opponent’s guard. Its advanced guide also describes a Strength bonus for scaling when two-handing. These are reasons to try the option with a weapon whose attacks suit you; they do not establish that every player should two-hand every weapon.

Keep your early investment concentrated

For a simple first build, it is useful to support one main weapon consistently rather than divide upgrade materials and stat investment among several unrelated weapons. This is practical advice, not a game rule: weapon level improves scaling, and a focused set of attribute choices makes it easier to meet requirements and benefit from that scaling. You can still try other weapons; the point is to avoid committing scarce attention and upgrades to multiple directions before you know which one you enjoy.

  1. Find a moveset you can use. Try weapons with manageable attacks and choose a pace—slower and heavier, or faster—that fits how you respond to enemies.
  2. Check requirements. Confirm that your character meets the weapon’s displayed attribute requirements before treating it as a dependable main option.
  3. Read the scaling. Identify which attributes contribute to its damage, then prioritize the relevant direction instead of leveling every damage stat.
  4. Upgrade your chosen main weapon consistently. Weapon level affects its scaling bonuses, so concentrating upgrade effort is a practical way to support the build.
  5. Recheck equipment load. A new weapon can change total equipped weight; make sure it does not push you above the medium-roll threshold if that roll is important to your play.
  6. Try two-handing when it fits. It can increase weapon power and help break guard, while also granting a Strength scaling bonus; decide by testing whether the approach works for your encounters.

Ashes of War can modify scaling grades, according to Bandai Namco’s advanced-stats guide. That means the scaling you see can be affected by more than the weapon’s name or broad type. Use the displayed weapon information when making an investment decision, and avoid assuming that an early impression of a weapon’s scaling can never change.

Three beginner build directions to compare

Rather than looking for a build that wins on every measure, compare the trade-offs that matter to your comfort. These directions are starting frameworks, not complete endgame recipes or fixed stat allocations.

Direction Strength for a learner Main trade-off to manage
Vagabond melee Begins with the shield, armor, weapons, and larger health pool highlighted in the beginner recommendation. Heavier equipment can pressure equipment load; retain a medium roll by staying at 69.9% or less of maximum weight.
Warrior-style dual wielding Matches a more aggressive opening combat style. It is less centered on a shield-first approach; the class itself does not guarantee an easier run.
Astrologer sorcery Starts in an Intelligence-oriented direction and supports ranged spell play. Spells consume FP, making resource use part of the build’s routine.
Prophet incantations Starts in a Faith-oriented direction, with incantations that can include healing and buffs. Faith is a deliberate build choice; invest in it for the incantations or requirements you intend to use.

Use the comparison as a way to choose what you want to learn. A player who wants to practice close-range timing may prefer the Vagabond route; someone excited by spellcasting may be more motivated to begin with Astrologer or Prophet. A class’s opening strengths matter most in the opening, while later choices can move the character in a different direction.

A practical leveling sequence for a first playthrough

There is no universal level-by-level allocation in the official guidance cited here, and an exact sequence would depend on the weapon, spells, and playstyle you choose. Use this order of questions whenever you earn levels, so each decision has a reason.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask whether low HP is the problem. If you are dying before you can learn an enemy’s pattern, prioritize Vigor. It is an early priority and a broadly useful stat; treat 40 as a longer-term milestone rather than an immediate quota.
  2. Ask what equipment you want to use. Check its attribute requirements. Invest enough to use it, then avoid raising unrelated damage stats without a clear purpose.
  3. Ask which stat improves that equipment. Follow its displayed scaling, taking account of weapon level and any scaling changes from an Ash of War. Strength and Dexterity are common directions for physical weapons, but the weapon’s own information should guide the decision.
  4. Ask whether your FP use is frequent. If spells, weapon skills, or spirit summons are central to your approach, consider Mind. If you are mostly using ordinary melee attacks, Mind may be less urgent.
  5. Ask what is limiting your movement or actions. If stamina is a consistent problem or your equipment load leaves you with a heavy roll, Endurance may help. For a medium roll, compare total equipped weight with maximum load and stay at or below 69.9%.
  6. Only add specialist stats for a chosen tool. Invest in Intelligence for sorceries, Faith for incantations, or Arcane for a relevant requirement, item discovery, or status approach. Avoid treating all three as mandatory.

This sequence separates immediate survival from later optimization. It also gives a useful diagnostic: if your build feels weak, ask whether the weapon is upgraded, whether you meet its requirements, and whether your invested damage stat matches its scaling before adding points elsewhere.

Common beginner build problems and how to respond

“I die in only a few hits.”

Check Vigor before chasing another damage stat. HP determines how many hits you can take before dying, and Bandai Namco specifically identifies Vigor as an important early investment. The 40-Vigor figure is a broad progression milestone, not a demand that you reach it before learning the game.

“My weapon does not seem to benefit from my levels.”

Verify that you meet its requirements and inspect its scaling. If you are investing in a stat the weapon does not meaningfully use, the points may not support your chosen weapon as intended. Remember that weapon level improves scaling bonuses, and Ashes of War can alter scaling grades.

“I am rolling heavily after equipping more gear.”

Compare total equipped weight with maximum equipment load. The official 2023 thresholds place medium roll at 30–69.9% and heavy roll at 70–99.9%. To preserve a medium roll or faster, reduce equipped weight or address load capacity so that the total is no more than 69.9%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I keep running out of FP.”

First decide whether you are using FP-heavy tools as a central part of the build. Mind governs FP, which is used by spells, weapon skills, and spirit summons. If those tools define your play, Mind is relevant; if not, reconsider how often you use them before diverting levels from health or your weapon’s needs.

“I want to change class or combat style.”

A starting class does not lock your character. The origin provides the opening package, while later choices can develop in another direction. Use the class that makes the first hours appealing, then reassess based on what weapons and spells you enjoy rather than assuming that the original choice must define the whole run.

Edition and starting-class availability

Be cautious about quoting a definitive class total without specifying edition and platform. The official class page surfaced for this guide describes ten starting classes, while Bandai Namco’s current Elden Ring overview says Tarnished Edition includes two new starting classes. The available official descriptions do not settle which editions and platforms expose every added class, so confirm the player’s edition and platform before presenting an exact roster as universal.

Bandai Namco describes Tarnished Edition as including the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree, two new starting classes, four exclusive armor sets, new weapons and combat techniques, and Torrent customization options. The additional content is also described as a digital purchase on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. That bundle description should not be generalized to every base-game retail listing, and the Tarnished Edition is not required for the class-and-stat advice in this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an ordinary first-build decision, the practical point is simpler than the roster question: choose from the options available in your own edition, then select the opening package that best matches your desired combat style. The build principles—prioritizing Vigor, matching stats to weapon scaling, and watching equipment load—are presented here as general guidance, not as a promise about a particular retail bundle.
