Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart by completing the Cave of Knowledge tutorial, then explore at your own pace: activate Sites of Grace, collect map fragments, and leave difficult fights for later. Resting at a Site of Grace restores resources and provides a place to plan. After meeting Melina at a Site of Grace and accepting her accord, you can spend runes to level up and use Torrent to travel. You do not need to defeat every enemy you see, and dying is not automatically a total loss: you can recover dropped runes once, provided you return before dying again.
What should you do first in Elden Ring?
Take the Cave of Knowledge route at the Stranded Graveyard before heading into the open world. Near the ghostly character, look for a hole leading down into the tutorial. It introduces core actions and combat ideas, including guarding, dodging, stance breaking and guard counters. These basics matter more than learning a particular build: recognizing when to defend, evade or punish an opening gives you options against many kinds of enemy.

A useful first-session order
- Complete the tutorial. Try the actions it introduces rather than rushing through the messages. The point is to learn what an action does and how it fits into a fight.
- Find and rest at Sites of Grace. They mark progress, restore resources and offer menus for systems available to you.
- Meet Melina. After discovering a few Sites of Grace, rest at one. Melina may appear; accept her accord to unlock leveling and receive the Spectral Steed Whistle. The official early-game guidance does not establish a fixed number of graces that guarantees this encounter.
- Explore nearby roads and landmarks. Look for map fragments, merchants and routes worth marking. You can return to dangerous places after gaining experience or improving your equipment.
- Spend runes thoughtfully. Once leveling is available, consider spending a large carried amount before taking a risky detour.
How do Sites of Grace, the map and runes work?
Use graces to recover and make a plan
Resting at a Site of Grace restores HP and FP, clears status ailments and replenishes flask uses. A grace’s menu can also offer leveling, flask improvements, spell memorization and other options as those systems become available. Resting is therefore more than a checkpoint: it is a practical pause to review your equipment, decide where to explore next and use any newly unlocked progression options.

Discovered graces appear on the map, and some send out rays that point toward a direction of interest. Treat those rays as guidance, not as a command to follow immediately. The map shows location and terrain, lets you place markers and allows travel to discovered graces. Fast travel is unavailable in some dungeons, and you cannot open the map during battle.
Find map fragments and mark places to revisit
Map fragments add detail to areas you have not fully mapped. They are often found along roads near stone monuments, so a road-side monument is worth checking when the map is sparse. Markers help turn a large world into a list of specific decisions. Mark a cave you have not explored, a merchant you want to find again, a dangerous enemy you intend to revisit or treasure that is currently out of reach. A marker does not make a route safe; it simply helps you remember why you wanted to return.
Know what happens when you die
When you die, your carried runes drop at the place where you died. Return there to retrieve them. If you die again before collecting them, those dropped runes are lost. This makes a large unspent balance a reason to be cautious, not a reason to stop exploring altogether: choose whether the next trip is worth the risk, and spend runes when a suitable opportunity to level or use them is available.

How should you approach combat as a beginner?
Choose the response that fits the opening
Elden Ring offers several ways to handle an enemy. You can lock on to help keep a target in view, attack with your weapon, guard with a shield, dodge, jump or crouch. Weapon skills add another option when available. You do not need to use every technique in every fight; learn what creates a safe opening against the opponent in front of you.
A shield can block attacks, but guarding is not a reason to stop watching your stamina. Stamina is spent on actions such as attacking and defending. When it reaches zero, you cannot perform actions that use it until it recovers. Avoid draining the whole bar without a plan: leaving some available can give you room to respond when the enemy moves.

Some encounters reward waiting for an opening rather than trading hits. Attacks from behind, attacks after a successful parry and attacks against a fallen enemy can create a critical hit, though some enemies are exceptions. Jumping and dodging can help you avoid an attack and create a chance to counter. The tutorial is a place to learn the basic ideas; in the field, watch the enemy’s movement and adjust your timing instead of assuming one response works everywhere.

Use stealth and the environment deliberately
Crouching in grass is more effective for staying hidden. An enemy that has not noticed you takes extra damage from your first attack, making stealth useful when you want to thin out a group or begin a fight on better terms. It is an option, not a guarantee that every enemy or encounter can be bypassed quietly.
Pause to observe groups before charging in. An enemy’s routine may expose a safer approach, a hidden route or a chance to draw opponents into fighting each other. A short detour to avoid an ambush can be more useful than winning a fight that leaves you badly positioned for the next one.
Should you fight the Tree Sentinel?
You can, but you do not have to fight the Tree Sentinel as soon as you encounter it. Official early-game guidance describes it as very tough for a beginning player and explicitly treats the order of fights as the player’s choice. If its attacks are overwhelming, turn away and explore elsewhere. Coming back later is a normal use of the open world, not a failure to progress.
Apply the same judgment to other difficult encounters. If an enemy defeats you quickly, ask whether the problem is timing, equipment, available healing or simply that you have reached a challenge you would rather postpone. Watch its attacks, look for a route around it and consider returning after strengthening your character or weapon. There is no need to prove that every obstacle can be beaten on the first attempt.
What should you improve: your character, weapon or flasks?
Character levels are only one way to make progress. Your weapon, available flask uses and recovery, and any support you choose can all affect how manageable a fight feels. A rigid level target or one universally correct stat plan is not established by the beginner guidance; your choices should reflect the weapons and play style you want to use.

| Choice | What it affects | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Vigor | Raises HP. | Consider it if surviving a hit would give you a better chance to learn an enemy’s pattern or recover from a mistake. |
| Strength | Affects access to higher-level weapons and melee attack power. | Consider it in relation to the melee weapons you want to use and their requirements. |
| Intelligence | Affects access to and the power of sorceries. | Consider it if sorcery is part of the approach you want to develop. |
| Weapon upgrades | Improve a chosen weapon; the beginner guidance recommends upgrading weapons as one route to greater effectiveness. | Consider an upgrade when levels alone are not making a fight feel more manageable and you want to keep using that weapon. |
| Flasks | Grace menus offer flask improvements as those options become available. | Review your flask options when you rest and decide whether healing or FP recovery is the more relevant need. |
These are decision points rather than a complete build prescription. Check what a weapon or spell requires before spending levels toward it, and choose improvements that support the way you actually want to fight. If you prefer a different approach later, the beginner guidance does not require you to stay locked into one strategy from the outset.
How do you get Torrent and use mounted combat?
After accepting Melina’s accord at a Site of Grace, you receive the Spectral Steed Whistle, which lets you summon Torrent. Torrent makes travel across the open world easier and gives you a mounted-combat option. You can practice riding without treating mounted fighting as mandatory; some enemies or situations may be easier to handle on foot.
When attacking from Torrent, pay attention to which side is positioned to strike. Charged attacks can hit multiple enemies, and mounted combat may be useful against large field enemies. These techniques require attention to positioning, so try them when you have room to adjust rather than assuming that staying mounted is automatically safer.
If Torrent’s health is depleted and you want to revive the steed, doing so consumes a Crimson Flask. Factor that cost into a fight: a flask used to bring Torrent back is not available for another use until its supply is restored.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do spirit summons work, and when should you use them?
Spirit summons can give an enemy another target, help relieve pressure or complement your approach. They are optional support, not a substitute for learning how a fight works. The starter guidance says you can summon only one spirit type at a time and cannot summon spirits during multiplayer.
Get the bell and spirit ashes
The early route described by the official guide is to obtain the Spectral Steed Whistle, then meet Renna at the Church of Elleh to receive a Spirit Calling Bell and spirit ashes. If you miss that opportunity under the circumstances described in the guide, a later purchase route is available at Roundtable Hold. Use the ashes you have available; the guidance does not say that every spirit suits every fight or build.

Decide whether to strengthen a spirit
Spirit upgrades require runes and glovewort. The five-tip guide says strengthening a summon can raise its health, damage and defense. Before spending resources, consider whether you use that spirit often enough to benefit from the improvement, and whether you would rather put the runes toward a character level or another progression choice.
What if you want help from another player?
Co-op is another way to seek support. The official multiplayer guide describes co-op signs and the Furlcalling Finger Remedy, which Kalé sells a Crafting Kit to let you craft. Its guidance says co-op players need to be in approximately the same area. Exact multiplayer conditions can depend on the situation, so do not assume that being anywhere in the world is enough to connect with a particular player.
Spirit summons and co-op are different options: the starter guide says spirits cannot be summoned during multiplayer. If you want to use spirit support, plan around that restriction; if you want another player’s help, use the multiplayer tools instead.
Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Trying to clear every enemy immediately. The world is open, and the fight order is up to you. Retreat, mark the location and explore elsewhere when a foe is too strong.
- Ignoring the tutorial prompts. Combat fundamentals such as guarding, dodging and guard counters are introduced early, and the Info menu lets you reread missed tutorial text.
- Spending all your stamina without noticing. Actions that use stamina are unavailable while it is depleted. Keep enough room to respond instead of attacking or guarding automatically.
- Carrying more runes into danger than you intend to risk. A first death drops them; a second death before recovery loses them. Consider whether to spend a large balance before a risky exploration.
- Assuming character levels solve every difficulty. A weapon upgrade, flask improvement, summon or different approach may matter more for the problem you are facing.
- Following map guidance without looking around. Rays and markers help orient you, but observing the terrain and enemies can reveal hazards, alternate routes and places to return to later.
- Treating mounted combat as compulsory. Torrent is useful for traversal and can be useful in fights, but you can choose to fight on foot when that suits the encounter better.
A simple decision framework when progress stalls
If a fight feels impossible, make one change at a time so you can tell what helped. First, decide whether you want to keep attempting the encounter now or mark it and leave. If you stay, observe the enemy before attacking, manage stamina and try a different response to its attacks. If you leave, use the map to choose another route, find a Site of Grace or look for a weapon, flask or summon improvement that suits your approach.
Before returning, check whether you are carrying runes you would rather spend, whether the weapon you want to use is supported by your attributes, and whether a spirit summon would help in that encounter. These questions turn a vague feeling of being underpowered into specific choices. You are not required to answer all of them by leveling: sometimes a different route, better timing or a break from a difficult enemy is the useful next move.
