No—bleed does not automatically scale with Arcane. In Elden Ring, Arcane affects Blood Loss buildup only when the weapon has Arcane scaling. That scaling can be part of the weapon’s native properties or can come from an affinity. A weapon merely displaying innate bleed is not enough.
Blood affinity adds bleed and Arcane scaling, while Occult and, in a different way, Poison can make a weapon’s existing innate bleed respond to Arcane. The distinction matters because choosing an affinity changes both the weapon’s damage scaling and how quickly its status effect builds.

The rule in one sentence
Arcane increases bleed buildup through an Arcane-scaling path, not through the presence of bleed alone. If a weapon has Blood Loss listed in its status information but no Arcane scaling, investing in Arcane does not automatically make that bleed build faster.

Innate bleed and Arcane scaling are separate properties
Many weapons have innate Blood Loss. “Innate” only means the status is built into the weapon rather than added by an affinity. It does not tell you which attributes improve the buildup.
Think of the weapon as having two separate entries:
- Status presence: whether the weapon can inflict Blood Loss at all.
- Status scaling: which attributes increase the amount of buildup applied by each hit.
A weapon can have the first without the second. In that case, its bleed remains useful, but Arcane is not automatically part of the calculation. The same principle applies when evaluating Poison: seeing a status on the weapon does not, by itself, prove that Arcane improves it.
What each relevant affinity does
The practical differences are easiest to see side by side. These descriptions concern status buildup and the scaling supplied by the affinity; they do not establish that one choice is superior for every weapon or character.
| Affinity or condition | Effect described by the mechanics references | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Blood | Adds Blood Loss buildup and Arcane scaling. The added Arcane scaling applies to physical attack power and Blood Loss buildup. | It can give a weapon bleed and make Arcane relevant to both damage and the new bleed scaling. |
| Occult | Applies Arcane scaling to a weapon’s innate Blood Loss and/or Poison buildup. The degree of status scaling differs between weapons. | It is relevant when the weapon already has a status to scale; it does not universally add bleed. |
| Poison | Adds Arcane scaling that applies to Poison and Blood Loss buildup. | It can make innate bleed respond to Arcane while also adding Poison buildup. |
| No Arcane scaling | The weapon’s scaling does not include Arcane. | Innate bleed remains present, but Arcane investment does not establish a bleed benefit by itself. |
Blood affinity: adding bleed and giving Arcane a job
Blood affinity is the straightforward option when you want an affinity to introduce Blood Loss. It adds Blood Loss buildup to the weapon and supplies Arcane scaling. According to the cited mechanics description, that Arcane scaling affects two different outputs: physical attack power and Blood Loss buildup.
That combination is important. Blood affinity is not merely a cosmetic way to display a bleed number. It changes the weapon’s scaling structure so that Arcane can contribute to the weapon’s damage and to the status buildup added by hits. A weapon that had no bleed before can therefore gain both the status and an Arcane-based route for improving it.

- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition
Because the amount of buildup depends on the specific weapon and its upgrade state, you should not assume that every Blood-affinity weapon gains the same result from the same Arcane investment. The affinity establishes the relationship; the weapon’s own properties determine the resulting values.
Occult affinity: scaling what the weapon already has
Occult works from the opposite starting point. Its relevant role is to apply Arcane scaling to innate Blood Loss and/or Poison buildup. It is therefore a choice for a weapon whose status effect is already part of its design.
Occult does not function as a universal bleed attachment. If a weapon has no innate Blood Loss, applying Occult should not be treated as a guaranteed way to create one. Its status benefit is tied to the buildup already present on the weapon, and the extent of that benefit varies among weapons.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating Occult as a stronger version of Blood for every bleed weapon. Blood adds Blood Loss as part of its affinity effect. Occult instead changes how an existing status can scale with Arcane. The two affinities can therefore produce different results even when the character has the same Arcane score.
Poison affinity can scale innate bleed too
Poison affinity is easy to overlook when the question is about bleed, but the cited mechanics reference describes an Arcane interaction with both Poison and Blood Loss buildup. In other words, Poison affinity can make a weapon’s innate bleed scale with Arcane while also adding Poison buildup.
This does not make Poison affinity a universal replacement for Blood or Occult. It gives the weapon a different status profile: Poison is added, and Arcane can apply to the relevant Poison and Blood Loss buildup. Whether that combination fits your weapon depends on whether you want one status, both statuses, or a particular damage-and-scaling arrangement.

The important mechanical takeaway is narrow: a weapon can gain Arcane-related bleed scaling through Poison affinity even though the affinity’s obvious identity is Poison rather than Blood.
How to check a weapon before investing in Arcane
Use this checklist whenever you are deciding whether Arcane will improve a weapon’s bleed:
- Confirm that Blood Loss is actually present. Check whether it is innate to the weapon or is being supplied by the selected affinity.
- Identify the source of Arcane scaling. Determine whether the weapon’s native properties include Arcane scaling or whether Blood, Occult, or Poison is supplying it.
- Separate added status from existing status. Blood affinity adds Blood Loss. Occult primarily scales innate Blood Loss and/or Poison. Poison can add Poison while scaling relevant innate buildup.
- Check the weapon-specific result. Status scaling is not identical across all weapons. Compare the weapon’s displayed scaling and buildup after selecting the affinity rather than assuming every weapon behaves alike.
- Consider physical damage separately. Under Blood affinity, the cited mechanics description says Arcane also affects physical attack power. A decision based only on the bleed value can miss this second effect.
- Account for version uncertainty. Community-maintained references describe the relationships, but detailed buildup values can change with weapon, upgrade level, and game version. Treat exact figures as version-sensitive rather than universal constants.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“Any weapon with bleed benefits from Arcane.”
False. Innate Blood Loss establishes the status, not the attribute that scales it. Arcane matters when Arcane scaling is present.

“Occult always adds bleed.”
False. Occult’s cited role is to apply Arcane scaling to innate Blood Loss and/or Poison. A weapon without innate bleed should not be assumed to receive bleed merely because Occult was selected.
“Blood and Occult are interchangeable.”
False. Blood adds Blood Loss and Arcane scaling. Occult applies Arcane scaling to status buildup the weapon already has. Their starting conditions and resulting status profiles differ.
“Poison affinity cannot affect bleed.”
False. The cited mechanics description says Poison affinity’s Arcane scaling applies to Poison and Blood Loss buildup, so innate bleed can benefit when that affinity is used.

“Arcane only changes status buildup.”
Not under the Blood-affinity interaction described here. Blood’s added Arcane scaling applies to physical attack power as well as Blood Loss buildup.
Choosing between the affinities without oversimplifying
Use Blood when you need the affinity to add bleed
Blood is the relevant path when the weapon lacks the desired Blood Loss effect and you want the affinity itself to supply it. It also creates an Arcane scaling route for the weapon’s physical attack power and its Blood Loss buildup.
Use Occult when the weapon’s innate status is the foundation
Occult is appropriate to evaluate on a weapon that already carries innate Blood Loss and/or Poison. Its purpose in this comparison is to make that existing status respond to Arcane, with the amount of scaling depending on the individual weapon.
Use Poison when a dual-status profile is intentional
Poison affinity is the case to examine when you want Poison added and also want Arcane to influence relevant Poison and innate Blood Loss buildup. It is not a generic “bleed affinity”; it creates a different combination of effects.
Keep a non-Arcane option in the comparison
If an affinity or weapon configuration does not provide Arcane scaling, Arcane investment should not be justified solely by the fact that the weapon displays bleed. Compare the weapon’s actual scaling information and your intended attributes before committing upgrade materials or respec decisions.

The core relationship is clear: Arcane is conditional on Arcane scaling, and Blood, Occult, and Poison can create different routes to that scaling. What is not established here is a universal numerical formula for every weapon, upgrade level, or patch.
The detailed mechanics pages used for these distinctions are community-maintained references rather than an official, patch-specific developer statement. Their affinity descriptions are useful for understanding the system, but exact buildup values should be checked against the weapon, upgrade level, and game version you are actually using. No single number should be generalized across the entire arsenal.
Practical takeaway
Start with the weapon’s scaling, not its status icon. If Arcane scaling is absent, innate bleed alone does not make Arcane increase Blood Loss. Blood affinity adds bleed and gives Arcane a role in both physical attack power and buildup; Occult scales innate Blood Loss and/or Poison without universally adding bleed; Poison can also make innate bleed respond to Arcane while adding Poison. That is the complete decision rule for answering whether your particular bleed weapon benefits from Arcane.
