In Elden Ring, Colossal Weapons are a weapon class built around heavy hits, with slower attacks and substantial weight as the tradeoffs. They are not the same class as Colossal Swords: the Greatsword, despite its name, is a Colossal Sword. Choose between individual weapons by checking their requirements, weight, moveset, skill and acquisition route—not by assuming one is best for every build.
What counts as a Colossal Weapon?
Elden Ring uses separate class labels for Colossal Weapons and Colossal Swords. The distinction matters when checking a weapon’s stats or looking up class-specific advice: do not treat the terms as interchangeable. The Greatsword is one example of the naming trap; the game classifies it as a Colossal Sword, not a Colossal Weapon. What is the tradeoff of using colossal weapons?
The Colossal Sword class reference describes excellent reach and area coverage, as well as high damage against health and poise. It also identifies high weight and slow attack speed as the costs. That is useful context for the broader colossal-weapon playstyle, but it is a class-level description of Colossal Swords; an individual Colossal Weapon may differ in its stats and moveset. - Health and poise damage: heavy attacks can pressure an enemy’s health and poise.
- Weight and attack tempo: the heavier load and slower attacks call for more attention to equip load, openings and recovery.
How do Strength requirements change when two-handing?
The class reference says two-handing increases effective Strength by 50%, which can let a character wield some weapons below their listed one-handed Strength requirement. This is a Strength-specific adjustment, not a replacement for checking the weapon’s requirements or planning the rest of a build. Dexterity requirements still matter. Eldenpedia’s class reference

How should you compare individual weapons?
Start with the constraints that determine whether a weapon fits your character, then compare how it plays and how you obtain it. Two examples show why the class label and the individual item page both matter:

- Requirements: compare Strength and Dexterity with your character’s stats, and account for whether you plan to wield the weapon one- or two-handed.
- Equip load: include the weapon’s weight when considering your other equipment.
- Moveset: reach, attack speed and recovery determine how a weapon fits your preferred timing and the openings a fight gives you.
- Weapon skill: check the individual item’s page for its skill and whether the weapon permits customization; do not assume class membership determines this.
- Acquisition: consider where the weapon is found or which enemy must be defeated, especially if you want it early.
What did Patch 1.04 change?
Bandai Namco Europe’s official Patch 1.04 notes, published 19 April 2022, say: “Increased Colossal Swords/Colossal weapons attack speed and lowered their recovery time. Jump attack not included.” The notes also say two-handed attack damage increased, excluding jump attacks, and that physical block rate and guard boost increased for several named classes, including Colossal Swords and Colossal Weapons. There is no universal winner established by these item and class references. A suitable choice depends on your build, available equip load, the encounter and the moveset you prefer. The question “What’s the best Colossal Weapon in the game?” appears as a Reddit post title, but that wording is not evidence of a consensus or a definitive answer. Reddit discussion
