These checks help identify where the problem lies; they are diagnostic steps, not a guaranteed Elden Ring-specific repair.
Check whether these steps apply to your setup
This troubleshooting flow is for the Steam/PC version. Steam lists Elden Ring as having Full Controller Support and names Xbox Controllers. That confirms Steam support for the game, not compatibility with every third-party controller or every configuration.
At the platform level, Steam Big Picture supports Microsoft Xbox, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers; third-party controllers may work but are not officially supported by Steam. Platform support does not guarantee that a particular device will work in Elden Ring. Steam’s controller support levels documentation describes these platform-level distinctions. The steps below use Steam’s general controller guidance; they are not a publisher-verified Elden Ring repair sequence.
Find which layer is failing
Controller problems can arise before the game sees an input, in Steam’s overlay or configuration, or from a conflict with another device, driver, or program. Work through these checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what affects the result.

1. Check Steam detection and the Overlay
- Connect the controller and check whether Steam detects it.
- Launch Elden Ring and test whether the Steam Overlay opens. Steam says the Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality and recommends checking it when controller configuration is not working.
- If the Overlay does not appear, check Steam settings to make sure it is enabled. Steam’s controller configuration guidance covers the Overlay check. The exact settings path can vary with the Steam client, so use the current client’s settings rather than relying on an older menu path.
If Steam does not detect the controller, focus on the device and its connection before changing the game’s layout. If Steam detects it but the Overlay or in-game inputs fail, continue with the configuration checks.
2. Review the selected controller configuration
A layout can be unsuitable if it uses an input style the game does not support. In Steam’s controller settings for Elden Ring, try a different available configuration or a community layout where applicable. Choose a layout intended for a game with controller support, and test whether inputs work after changing it. Steam’s configuration guidance explains this general limitation.

The available evidence does not establish a specific Steam Input toggle as the fix for Elden Ring, so do not treat switching that setting as a universal solution.
3. Restart Steam and isolate other input devices
- Close Elden Ring and fully exit Steam, then start Steam again.
- As a diagnostic, disconnect other controllers and unnecessary input peripherals.
- Launch Elden Ring, then reconnect the controller you want to use and test it.
- If the problem remains, isolate input devices one at a time. If removing one device changes the result, investigate that device or its driver rather than changing several settings at once.
Steam recommends restarting the client and isolating connected devices as troubleshooting tests; neither step guarantees a fix. See Steam controller troubleshooting.

4. Check for software conflicts
Steam identifies several programs that can conflict with Steam Controller functionality, including Razer Synapse, XInput emulators, Fraps, Skype or Skypehost, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm. If you use any of them, close suspected programs one at a time, restart Steam, and test again. This helps identify a conflict without unnecessarily uninstalling software. Steam’s troubleshooting page lists these examples.
When to suspect the controller itself
Test the controller in another game or with the operating system’s available device checks. If it also fails there, or a hardware diagnostic points to a device fault, hardware becomes a more plausible cause than an Elden Ring configuration issue. If it works elsewhere, keep investigating Steam detection, the Overlay, layouts, connected devices, and software conflicts.

Only consider replacing the controller after those tests point toward hardware failure. An Xbox controller is a relevant option because Steam’s Elden Ring listing names Xbox Controllers, but buying one is not a general remedy for software or configuration problems.
