To summon your horse in Elden Ring, rest at Sites of Lost Grace until Melina appears, accept her accord to receive the Spectral Steed Whistle, then equip and use the whistle as an item. The horse is Torrent. Some locations prevent summoning.
How to get Torrent
Rest at Sites of Lost Grace as you explore. Melina can appear when you rest after you have found a few Sites of Lost Grace. Accept her accord to receive the Spectral Steed Whistle; Bandai Namco does not specify a fixed number of Sites required. Bandai Namco’s early-game tips explain the encounter.
How to summon your horse
- Open your equipment and place the Spectral Steed Whistle in an item slot.
- Use the whistle with your game’s item-use input. The official guide lists Square on PlayStation and X on Xbox. It covers PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. Bandai Namco’s starter guide shows the item-use controls.
On PC, check the current in-game controls rather than assuming a keyboard key: bindings can vary. You can check or change controller mappings at Menu → System → Controller Settings.
How to dismount Torrent
Press L3 (click the left stick) or use the Spectral Steed Whistle again. If you dismount while moving, your character jumps off. These actions are described in the Bandai Namco starter guide and the FromSoftware online manual.

Why you can’t summon Torrent
- You do not have the whistle yet: Rest at Sites of Lost Grace until Melina offers her accord, then accept it to receive the Spectral Steed Whistle.
- You are in a restricted location: Some areas and dungeons block summoning. The official manual does not list every restricted location, so a failed summon does not mean all interiors or dungeons follow the same rule.
- Torrent has died: You can summon him again, but the resummon consumes one Flask of Crimson Tears, according to the FromSoftware online manual.
- Your button prompt is different: Check your current control bindings. The listed Square and X inputs are for PlayStation and Xbox, not a universal PC key.
