To reach Moonlight Altar in Elden Ring, collect the Dark Moon Ring from the chest in Raya Lucaria Grand Library, defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, then take the lift beyond his arena. At Moonlight Altar, go to the Cathedral of Manus Celes and descend through the opening in its floor to reach Ranni. Completing the interaction earns the Dark Moon Greatsword and makes the Age of Stars ending available—but you still choose that ending after the final boss.
Before you go: get the Dark Moon Ring
The Dark Moon Ring opens the sealed route beyond Astel. After the Baleful Shadow encounter, use the Discarded Palace Key on the chest in Rennala’s boss room, the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. How to reach Moonlight Altar
- Defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. Follow the Lake of Rot route to its end and defeat Astel. Astel’s location and encounter guide covers the boss.
- Continue beyond the arena. After the fight, leave the arena and take the lift. If you have the Dark Moon Ring, the route is no longer sealed and the lift carries you up to Moonlight Altar.
- Travel to the Cathedral of Manus Celes. Cross the plateau to the cathedral. Its floor opening leads into a tunnel below.
How to finish Ranni’s quest at the cathedral
Descend through the opening in the Cathedral of Manus Celes and follow the tunnel to Ranni. Interact with her and continue through the ring-related prompt and remaining dialogue. When the scene ends, Ranni disappears and leaves the Dark Moon Greatsword, completing this part of her quest. The cathedral and interaction are covered in Fextralife’s Ranni quest guide.
How to choose the Age of Stars ending
Completing Ranni’s quest makes the Age of Stars ending available; it does not select it automatically. After defeating the final boss, use Ranni’s blue summon sign on the Stone Platform if you want to choose that ending. If you do not interact with the sign, the quest completion alone does not commit you to Age of Stars.
