Do this before defeating Messmer: that later progression can close the early dialogue sequence.
Find Hornsent Grandam in Belurat
- Reach the Small Private Altar Site of Grace in Belurat, Tower Settlement, and find the Storeroom Key along the route to the locked Storeroom.
- Use the key to enter the Storeroom. Speak with Hornsent Grandam and exhaust her available dialogue.
Use the Divine Beast Head to unlock more dialogue
- Continue through Belurat and defeat the Divine Beast Dancing Lion.
- Pick up the Divine Beast Head in the boss area; it is not automatically added to your inventory.
- Equip the head, return to Grandam in the Storeroom, and speak with her. Exhaust her dialogue to receive the Watchful Spirit incantation.
The head must be equipped for this interaction. Simply owning it is not enough to trigger the additional conversation.
Get the stews from Grandam
- After the head-triggered conversation, refresh the area and return to speak with Grandam again to receive Scorpion Stew.
- After defeating Messmer, return to her for Gourmet Scorpion Stew, provided you completed the earlier dialogue sequence in time.
Why Hornsent Grandam may not talk
If she gives no additional dialogue, check that you have exhausted her initial conversation, defeated the Divine Beast Dancing Lion, and equipped its Divine Beast Head before returning to the Storeroom. The early sequence is missable: PowerPyx’s June 24, 2024 guide warns that defeating Messmer can prevent the questline from being initiated, while Gamer Guides places the head-triggered conversation before that milestone. Neither guide verifies a recovery method if Messmer has already been defeated and the initial sequence is unavailable. The behavior cited here is based on third-party guides; these sources do not establish whether every platform or later patch behaves identically. PowerPyx and Gamer Guides provide the walkthrough details.
