Bandai Namco’s specific advice for unstable framerate on PS5 is to try Safe Mode > Rebuild Database; it may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix. The other steps below are general PlayStation troubleshooting checks, not confirmed Elden Ring framerate cures.
First, identify what kind of lag you mean
- Visual stutter or uneven motion: the image itself hitches or moves unevenly, including when you are playing offline. Follow the console and game checks below.
- Online delay: multiplayer actions, messages, or other players seem delayed, while the picture otherwise looks smooth. Prioritize the connection and service checks in step 7.
These symptoms can overlap. They do not, by themselves, identify a particular cause.
Try these seven checks in order
1. Close Elden Ring and restart the PS5
- Close the game from the PS5 home screen using the game’s options menu.
- Restart the console, then launch Elden Ring again and check whether the same symptom remains.
PlayStation includes restarting the console in its general game troubleshooting. It is a simple reset that may clear a transient problem, not a game-specific performance fix. PlayStation’s game troubleshooting steps
2. Check Elden Ring’s game and regulation versions
Compare the version shown on the title screen with Bandai Namco’s official patch information. The page lists App Ver. 1.16 and Regulation Ver. 1.16, but versions can change, so do not treat those numbers as the latest indefinitely. Regulation files download after logging in. Bandai Namco’s version 1.15 notes also say that online play requires that update.

On PS5, highlight Elden Ring on the home screen, press the options button, and choose Check for Update. If the game is out of date, install the available update before testing again.
3. Compare the game’s performance setting, if available
If Elden Ring offers a performance-related graphics mode in your game settings, note the current selection and try the alternative briefly in the same area. Keep whichever feels better, or restore your original setting. This is a reversible comparison, not a guaranteed fix: the official sources cited here do not provide a measured PS5 graphics-mode comparison or establish that one mode improves framerate.

4. Move the game to internal storage if it is on USB extended storage
If Elden Ring is installed on USB extended storage, try moving it to the PS5’s internal storage and see whether the symptom changes. Sony includes moving a game to internal storage in troubleshooting for games installed on USB extended storage, particularly in a game-start context; it does not establish that this will cure ordinary framerate stutter. 5. Check for a PS5 system software update
From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then check for an update. Follow the console prompts if one is available. Sony includes checking system software in its general game troubleshooting flow; that is a maintenance check, not evidence of a specific Elden Ring performance bug. PlayStation support

6. Use Safe Mode’s Rebuild Database option
This is the game-specific recommendation from Bandai Namco. Its patch notes say: “For the PS5 version of the game, unstable framerate may be improved by using the ‘Rebuild Database’ option from Safe Mode.” The wording is deliberately qualified: it may improve the problem, but does not guarantee a result. See the version 1.16 notes and version 1.15 notes.
- Turn off the PS5 completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep, then connect a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Rebuild Database from the Safe Mode menu and follow the on-screen instructions.
Use Sony’s current Safe Mode instructions if you need help entering the menu or identifying its options. Choose Rebuild Database, not Reset PS5 or Reinstall System Software; those are different options with more serious consequences.

7. Redownload the game, and handle online symptoms separately
If Elden Ring still behaves abnormally, Sony’s general game troubleshooting includes deleting and redownloading the game. Make sure your save is protected before deleting anything, then download the game again; Sony suggests using a wired connection if possible for the download. These are general troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed repair for Elden Ring framerate stutter. PlayStation’s guidance
If the problem is limited to online play, check the PS5’s connection status and PlayStation Network service status separately. Ethernet can be useful for connectivity and download troubleshooting, but the cited sources do not say a wired connection fixes local graphics stutter. Avoid treating a router change or port-forwarding as a proven solution without symptoms pointing to a network problem.

How to judge whether a step helped
After each change, revisit the same location or type of encounter and observe whether the same symptom recurs. Change one thing at a time where practical; otherwise, you will not know which check made a difference. For online delay, compare online play with an offline session: a problem that appears only online points toward a different troubleshooting path than visible stutter in both.
The available official guidance does not establish a measured PS5 benchmark, a winning graphics mode, or a PS5-versus-PS4 edition performance advantage. Treat mode changes and general console checks as tests, not proven fixes.
