Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If Elden Ring is running at a low or unstable frame rate on PC, first check System > Graphics > Ray Tracing Quality and turn ray tracing off if it is enabled unintentionally. Then compare your PC with the game’s published requirements and test whether a third-party mouse-control utility is affecting performance. These checks can help isolate a cause, but none guarantees a universal FPS improvement.
Start with the checks Bandai Namco recommends
Check whether ray tracing is enabled
Open System > Graphics > Ray Tracing Quality from the title menu or during play. If ray tracing is on and you did not mean to enable it, switch it off and compare performance in the same area and at the same resolution. Bandai Namco warns that ray tracing can affect frame rate and resolution in its Patch 1.09 notes.
The publisher also documented a bug in June 2024 that could turn ray tracing on automatically after loading save data created in earlier game versions. That history makes the setting worth checking; it does not establish that the old bug affects every current installation. See the Patch 1.12.2 notes and the Patch 1.16 notes.
Test third-party mouse-control software
If the frame rate is unstable, temporarily close third-party applications that control mouse behavior, then retest. Bandai Namco identifies these utilities as a possible cause of unstable framerate and says deactivating them may improve performance in its Patch 1.16 notes. Treat this as a targeted diagnostic, not evidence that every overlay or background app causes low FPS.

Install the latest game update
Update the game through the platform where you own it. The latest official patch linked from the version 1.16 page at the time covered here is Patch 1.17, dated August 27, 2026, for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Steam. Its stated focus is support for the Tarnished Pack DLC and gameplay balance; its PC bug fixes concern mouse camera control during NPC dialogue and a keyboard-and-mouse settings reset issue, not a general FPS improvement.
Compare your PC with Elden Ring’s requirements
Steam’s published PC requirements are useful baselines for checking whether your components meet the listed minimum or recommended configuration. They do not promise a particular frame rate. The listing does not state a guaranteed FPS target for either tier. Requirements below are from Elden Ring’s Steam listing.

Check your actual CPU, GPU, RAM, display resolution, and graphics settings before drawing conclusions. If your system is below the minimum, lowering settings may not be enough, but the requirement alone is not a reason to buy a particular component. Establish what is limiting your own PC first.
Ray tracing has separate, higher hardware specifications
The ray-tracing specifications below were published in Bandai Namco’s Patch 1.09 notes in 2023. They are separate from Steam’s base-game requirements and should not be read as a current-market buying guide. The listed target settings are part of each specification.

If Elden Ring fails to start properly or becomes unstable with ray tracing enabled, Bandai Namco’s Patch 1.09 guidance says to check the ray-tracing environment requirements and update your graphics-card drivers. It does not specify a required driver version.
Tell low average FPS apart from stuttering
A consistently low frame rate and brief drops or bursts of stuttering are different symptoms. Note which one you experience, then record the platform, CPU, GPU, resolution, graphics settings, and whether ray tracing is on. Change one setting at a time and compare in a repeatable situation; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change mattered.

Use file verification only for the symptom it addresses
Patch 1.16 recommends verifying the integrity of game files if the PC displays “Inappropriate activity detected” even though you have not cheated, before restarting. The publisher does not describe file verification as a general fix for low FPS or stuttering, so do not treat that step as a routine performance remedy.
When a hardware upgrade might be relevant
The official requirements identify hardware tiers, but they do not show which component is limiting your particular PC or name a best-value upgrade. Before considering a purchase, identify your CPU and GPU, check which is under strain during the problem, and account for your intended resolution and settings. A GPU upgrade is conditional on that diagnosis, not an automatic solution to every Elden Ring performance issue.
