Moonveil’s Transient Moonlight skill sends a magic wave with either follow-up slash, making Intelligence the main damage investment if you expect to use the skill often. This guide also covers where to get the weapon, a level-150 example, and equipment choices for a Samurai-themed character.
Where to find Moonveil
Moonveil drops from the Magma Wyrm in Gael Tunnel, on the Limgrave–Caelid border. PC Gamer’s location guide describes entering from the Caelid side near Rotview Balcony. You can reach the tunnel’s rear entrance and leave without fighting the boss, then return when you are ready.

The boss arena is confined and has lava. Fire resistance can help, and staying near the Magma Wyrm’s feet may make it easier to avoid some of its attacks. Take care not to get trapped against the arena walls.
Moonveil requirements and how its skill works
Moonveil deals both physical and magic damage, has innate Blood Loss buildup of 50, and comes with Transient Moonlight. Its attributes requirements are 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity, and 23 Intelligence. It cannot be given a different skill or affinity, so the build’s choices support the weapon as it is.

Transient Moonlight puts the katana into a sheathed stance. Follow with a light or heavy attack to perform a slash that also sends out a magic wave:
- Light follow-up: a quicker horizontal sweep with a wider arc, useful for fast openings or nearby groups.
- Heavy follow-up: a vertical slash with greater reach and somewhat higher damage. Use it when you have room to commit.
The attack is most effective when both the blade and the projectile connect. The melee hit can add stance pressure, so do not treat the wave as the whole attack when you can safely close the distance.
Choose a build direction
For frequent Transient Moonlight use, make Intelligence your primary offensive attribute after meeting the weapon requirements. A Mobalytics guide updated August 24, 2026, reports that a +10 Moonveil’s heavy projectile has 908 attack power at 23 Intelligence and 1,257 at 80 Intelligence. These are guide-reported game values, not guaranteed damage against an enemy: defenses, circumstances, and future balance changes can affect results.
If you rely more on ordinary katana attacks—such as regular, running, and jumping attacks—a hybrid allocation raises Dexterity while keeping Intelligence substantial. The trade-off is less emphasis on maximum skill-projectile damage.

| Build approach | Example attributes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Skill-focused, level 150 | 60 Vigor, 25 Mind, 20 Endurance, 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity, 80 Intelligence, 6 Faith, 9 Arcane | Players who frequently use Transient Moonlight and want strong projectile damage. |
| Hybrid alternative | 60 Vigor, 25 Mind, 20 Endurance, 12 Strength, 40 Dexterity, 60 Intelligence | Players who mix skill attacks with ordinary physical katana strikes. |
These are recommendations from Mobalytics, not mandatory or uniquely optimal allocations. Starting class changes the initial attributes, not the eventual direction of the build. The guide recommends Prisoner for an Intelligence-focused setup because its starting Dexterity and Intelligence reduce the investment needed to meet Moonveil’s requirements. Samurai remains a valid choice if you prefer its theme or starting setup.

Use these as guideposts rather than a rigid leveling script. Meet Moonveil’s requirements, add Vigor so you can survive mistakes, then raise Intelligence if the weapon skill is your primary damage source. Increase Mind if you want more FP for skill use, and adjust Endurance to suit your armor and equipment load.

Transient Moonlight costs FP, so repeatedly using the skill without managing your resource can leave you unable to cast it when an opening appears. Moonveil’s split physical-and-magic damage can also be less effective against enemies with high magic resistance. Its innate Blood Loss is useful, but the cited Mobalytics guide cautions against treating Moonveil as a dedicated Bleed weapon.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAt higher Intelligence, sorceries can cover situations where the katana is less comfortable without turning the build into a full caster. The guide suggests:
- Rock Sling for physical damage against enemies resistant to magic.
- Greatblade Phalanx for additional stance pressure.
- Night Comet for longer-range attacks.
Choose spells that complement Moonveil’s close-to-medium-range playstyle and the FP you want to reserve for Transient Moonlight.
Equipment options
Equipment should support the way you actually fight. Extra skill damage may be worthwhile, but weigh it against defense, equip load, access requirements, and whether you can safely hold the stance before attacking.
| Option | Potential benefit | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Spellblade set | Mobalytics says each piece boosts Magic- and Cold-based weapon skill damage by 2%, or 8% for the full set, and applies to Transient Moonlight. | Lower defense than sturdier armor; wearing selected pieces can be a compromise. The set is obtained through Sorcerer Rogier’s quest and equipment. |
| White Reed set | A lightweight option for mobility. | No direct Moonveil damage bonus. Most pieces are in Spiritcaller’s Cave; the Okina Mask is obtained separately from Bloody Finger Okina. |
| Rellana’s Cameo | The guide reports a 45% follow-up damage increase after holding the stance for at least about one second. | Requires Shadow of the Erdtree and a safe enough opening to wait in stance. |
| Shard of Alexander | Mobalytics identifies it as a strong option for increasing Transient Moonlight damage. | Check quest progression and the talisman’s current in-game effect before finalizing your setup. |
Patch context
Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s official notes list version 1.16.1, dated August 21, 2025, for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Steam. The notes address bugs involving weapon affinity or status ailments applied during specific actions, plus an unauthorized multiplayer blocking bypass; they do not identify a Moonveil-specific balance change. See the official patch notes for the listed fixes. Patch information can change, so consult the publisher’s latest notes if you are checking the current balance state.
