Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow, is the toughest of the original eight Nightlords in this editorial ranking, with Maris, Fathom of Night, close behind because staying in range can be a challenge for melee-focused characters. This is a reasoned judgment, not an official ranking or a measured difficulty statistic: the available source material does not establish a complete objective hardest-to-easiest order.
The list covers the base game’s original eight Nightlords, not bosses added in The Forsaken Hollows or enhanced Everdark Sovereign variants. Rankings weigh attack pressure, punishment for mistakes, phase complexity, positioning and status demands, and the coordination a fight can ask of a party. A boss’s practical difficulty can still shift with your build, teammates, and expedition preparation.

How the ranking works—and why the expedition matters
Bandai Namco describes a Nightreign expedition as a three-day run. Players begin at level 1, gather runes and equipment, and make quick decisions about where to explore and fight; after surviving the second night, they can face the Nightlord. Enemies, bosses, loot, and drops can shift between sessions, so the final encounter is only one part of a run’s difficulty. See the official gameplay guide for the expedition structure.
The ordering below is an editorial comparison of the fights based on the described mechanics, not a claim about win rates or a universal experience across builds. The encounter descriptions draw in part on Brendan Lowry’s June 5, 2025 Windows Central ranking, which orders the bosses by how much its author enjoyed them—not by difficulty. That article is useful for its fight observations, but its order should not be mistaken for this one.

The 8 original Nightlords, ranked by fight difficulty
1. Darkdrift Knight — Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow
Fulghor takes the top spot for its combination of relentless pressure and varied threats. Its moveset includes wind waves, ground quakes, charges, and Holy attacks, leaving little room to settle into a single safe response. The Windows Central account also describes Fulghor as one of the harder Nightlords, making it the clearest high-difficulty signal among the original fights in the available encounter commentary.
Lightning is a useful option: Lowry notes that it can deal extra damage and interrupt Fulghor’s spear-calling attack during its charge-up. That interaction creates a meaningful counterplay window, but players still need to recognize the wind-up and respond in time.
2. Augur — Maris, Fathom of Night
Maris ranks high because flight and distance can make the fight awkward for melee-focused characters. When the boss is out of reach, a player may have fewer chances to punish it and more time exposed to its ranged pressure. Ranged attacks or magic can help destroy some projectiles, according to Lowry’s encounter description.
Sleep buildup adds another hazard: it can become dangerous when Maris falls asleep. The encounter therefore asks players to manage both positioning and status pressure, rather than simply keep attacking whenever they can reach the target.
3. Equilibrious Beast — Libra, Creature of Night
Libra’s challenge comes from fighting around Madness attacks and position-sensitive mechanics rather than relying on straightforward aggression. Crystals can counter its status buildup, and the encounter includes unusual interactions. Those mechanics reward players who notice and use the arena’s opportunities; ignoring them can make the fight harder to control.
Lowry ranked Libra as his favorite fight, but that is an enjoyment judgment, not evidence that it is the most difficult. Its placement here reflects the extra attention its status and interaction mechanics can demand.

4. Night Aspect — Heolstor the Nightlord
Heolstor mixes quick strikes with delayed attacks, which can punish players who dodge on instinct or assume a combo has ended. The second phase adds an elemental sword and directional shockwaves, increasing the number of attack patterns a party must read.
That combination puts Heolstor above fights with more readily described tells, though the available account does not establish a universal ranking between it and other demanding encounters. Watch the timing of each combo rather than treating every swing as part of a predictable rhythm.
5. Fissure in the Fog — Caligo, Miasma of Night
Caligo makes positioning part of the fight. Fog, frost attacks, and crystals that build Frostbite can complicate movement, while a more aggressive airborne phase increases pressure later in the encounter. Players need to track both where they can safely stand and how the fight changes when Caligo takes to the air.
Its mixture of environmental and phase-based demands is substantial, but the described mechanics give the challenge a clearer focus than the higher-ranked fights: manage the fog and frost, then adjust to the more aggressive phase.
6. Sentient Pest — Gnoster, Wisdom of Night
Gnoster is a scorpion and moth sharing one HP bar, so the party faces melee and ranged threats at once. Splitting roles can help players cover both enemies, but parasite-related poison effects complicate the fight, and the second phase combines their attacks.
Its coordination burden can make it feel harder for a group that concentrates on only one threat. The shared health bar and distinct roles offer a practical way to organize the fight, which keeps it below encounters that combine pressure with more difficult positioning or timing demands.

7. Gaping Jaw — Adel, Baron of Night
Adel uses bites and charges, then adds lightning aftershocks in phase two. In co-op, a grab can create an opportunity for an ally to rescue the captured player, adding a team-response element to the encounter.
Poisoning Adel in phase one can make it vomit and create a temporary attack opportunity, but the vomit itself is dangerous. That is a useful risk-and-reward interaction, not a free damage window: players need to take advantage without standing in the hazard.
8. Tricephalos — Gladius, Beast of Night
Gladius is placed at the bottom of this difficulty ranking, not because the fight is effortless, but because its described attacks are comparatively readable. It uses telegraphed bites, chain-sword sweeps, and occasional fire breath. A later phase splits it into three forms, creating a busier encounter, but the basic threats are easier to recognize than those of the higher-ranked bosses.
Lowry also called Gladius comparatively easiest in his own experience. That supports the placement as one author’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Gladius is the first Nightlord encounter described in that account.

The Forsaken Hollows adds separate boss content
The eight above are the original base-game roster. Bandai Namco says The Forsaken Hollows adds two Nightfarers, two bosses, and one Shifting Earth. Its Balancers boss expedition is DLC content, not an additional entry in this original-eight ranking. The DLC unlock conditions include defeating at least two base-game bosses, including Tricephalos, and unlocking Scholar and Undertaker. The publisher’s DLC unlock guide also describes conditions for DLC content to appear in Deep of Night. The official game page lists the DLC separately from the base game; owning the DLC does not mean the base game is included in that DLC listing.
Everdark Sovereigns are enhanced variants
Everdark Sovereigns are stronger versions of existing Nightlords with new moves and increased power, rather than extra members of the original eight. Bandai Namco Europe said their availability rotates and that players must defeat an original Nightlord to face its Sovereign form. Since availability rotates, the June 18, 2025 announcement is not a current schedule; check the Everdark Sovereigns announcement for the publisher’s explanation of the variants.
