Adel, Baron of Night—the Gaping Jaw—is most vulnerable to poison, according to PC Gamer’s boss guide. Bring poison if you can, stay beside the boss instead of in front of its jaws, and learn to react to its charge grab and phase-two lightning attacks. The guide’s specific tells and dodge advice are recommendations, not guaranteed outcomes.
Prepare during the expedition
A standard Expedition gives you two days of Limveld exploration and nighttime boss fights before the Nightlord showdown on day three. Use that time to gather runes, weapons, items, and upgrade materials rather than arriving at the final fight with whatever you started with. Bandai Namco’s official starter guide recommends following the map and Erdtree compass marker toward the nighttime boss while the Night’s Tide contracts the safe area. Churches can increase flask charges.

Prioritize poison and defenses
PC Gamer’s Adel boss guide identifies poison as the standout weakness: applying it can interrupt a charge and make Adel stop to vomit, giving the party an opening to attack. Frostbite and scarlet rot are other status options cited by the guide. It also recommends considering physical and lightning damage negation, since Adel attacks with bites and smacks as well as lightning.
That guide suggests aiming for around level 10 and looking for flask-charge upgrades. Treat these as preparation targets, not entry requirements. It also says merchants are guaranteed to sell at least one item tied to a boss weakness and recommends poison-symbol points of interest; those are guide-specific tips, so use them as leads rather than assuming a particular item or location will always be available in your run.

Choose tools for your approach
There is no evidence-based numeric ranking of weapons or builds here. Instead, consider what your character can contribute against a mobile target and how the party can stay alive:
- Ironeye: the guide suggests ranged ailment application, useful when Adel moves away from close-range attackers.
- Executor: a close-range ailment option.
- Raider: a suggested choice for stagger pressure, which can create damage windows.
- Duchess: can repeat recent damage or status effects, according to the guide.
- Wylder: the guide notes mobility as a useful strength against a moving boss.
These are possible roles, not a required team composition. If poison is unavailable, the guide’s frostbite and scarlet rot alternatives still give you status-based pressure to consider.
How to handle Adel’s attacks
PC Gamer’s May 29, 2025 guide describes the following attacks and responses. Watch the boss itself and adjust to what happens in your encounter; the advice below is attributed to that guide, not presented as firsthand testing.
Open-jaw charge grab
When Adel opens its jaw and charges, the guide recommends dodging toward the boss just before impact to pass through the grab. Avoid reacting too early: the advice depends on timing the roll close to the attack.
Roar and follow-up rampage
The roar stuns nearby players, then Adel follows with charges and may attempt a grab. The guide says the roar itself deals no damage; the danger is being caught by the follow-up while stunned or too close. Create distance as soon as you can and be ready to evade the next charge rather than treating the roar as the end of the sequence.

Phase-two lightning dive and ground wave
At roughly half health, the guide says phase two begins with an aerial dive followed by a ground-wide lightning wave. Dodge the dive, then jump the wave. Lightning-resistant items may help reduce risk, but they do not replace responding to the sequence.
Lightning streaks from a stomp
Adel can stomp and send lightning streaks along the ground. The guide recommends retreating or dodging toward an approaching streak shortly before it reaches you. Watch for the ground effect and avoid committing to an attack while the wave is about to pass.

PC Gamer recommends fighting around Adel’s side rather than directly in front of its jaw, where bites and grabs are a central threat. Status effects can keep pressure on a mobile target, while staggers can create safer opportunities to deal damage. When Adel disengages or begins a large tell, prioritize positioning and survival over chasing one more hit.

Standard Adel and Everdark Sovereign Adel
The advice above concerns the standard Gaping Jaw encounter. Bandai Namco announced an enhanced Everdark Sovereign version of Adel on June 18, 2025, describing it as more powerful and equipped with new moves. That announcement said the variant was available online during a time-limited rotation; it does not establish whether it is currently in rotation. Check the game’s expedition selection for current availability, and do not assume the standard-fight attack list covers every Everdark move.
