Elden Ring Nightreign did not offer two-player expeditions when it launched: players could go solo or play in groups of three. Director Junya Ishizaki said the team had focused on balancing those formats and “kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect.” Bandai Namco later added official Duo Expeditions, so two-player co-op is now supported.
Why didn’t Nightreign have two-player co-op at launch?
In a 22 May 2025 interview reported by GameSpot, director Junya Ishizaki said the team had concentrated on making solo and three-player play work well. “In putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect,” he said. He also apologized: “So we’re very sorry about that.”

At the time, Ishizaki said the studio was considering duo play for a post-launch update; that was a consideration, not a confirmed promise. The explanation was a development oversight tied to the team’s balancing focus—not evidence that two-player play was technically impossible or permanently incompatible with the game.
Can you play Nightreign with two people now?
Yes. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe published official instructions for Duo Expeditions on 31 July 2025. The original launch structure was solo or three-player play, as reflected in the publisher’s worldwide launch announcement. The later duo guide establishes that two-player expeditions became available after launch.

How to start a Duo Expedition
- At the Roundtable Hold, open the expedition interface. You remain solo in the Hold even when online.
- Open Matchmaking Setting and select Number of Players.
- Choose two players. If you want to play with a particular friend, set a password so they can join.
- Return to Target and commence the expedition.
Nightreign remembers matchmaking settings, so check the player count before starting a later run. You can play offline, but you cannot begin a multiplayer expedition while offline. These steps and limitations are in Bandai Namco’s Duo Expeditions guide.

Bandai Namco’s official Nightreign page lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The game is a standalone adventure in the Elden Ring universe. The publisher also lists a physical Collector’s Edition for PS5 and PS4, with a statue, steelbook, Nightfarer cards, hardcover artbook, digital soundtrack, and collector’s box.
