What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ELDEN RING is currently listed as Steam Deck Verified, but that rating does not guarantee every installation will launch or run reliably. The right fix depends on what is failing: installation, startup, stability, online play, or performance. Start with Steam’s general update and restart checks, then use the steps below that match your symptom.
First, identify what “not working” means
Before changing settings, note the exact behavior and when it occurs. Does the game fail to install, close before reaching the title screen, stop during anti-cheat initialization, crash after starting, fail to connect online, or run too slowly? Record any error message, whether the problem began after an update, and what happens immediately before the failure. Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance does not identify a specific cause for an individual ELDEN RING installation.
Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available updates.
- Restart the Steam Deck and try the game again.
These are Valve’s general first checks for Steam Deck software problems. They are a sensible starting point, not a confirmed fix for every ELDEN RING issue. See Steam’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide.
If the game crashes or behaves unreliably
Temporarily disable third-party applications
If you have installed third-party applications through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily, restart the Deck, and test ELDEN RING again. If the problem stops, that points to a possible interaction worth investigating; it does not by itself prove which application caused it.

Check the compatibility details
Steam currently marks ELDEN RING as Steam Deck Verified. Valve’s Verified category means a game works well out of the box against criteria for controller input, display, navigation, and system support. It is a broad compatibility rating—not a diagnosis of a particular device, installation, or recent game update. Valve also notes that ratings can change as games and Deck features evolve. Read Valve’s explanation of Steam Deck Verified and check the game’s current Steam listing.
If ELDEN RING will not launch: consider Proton
For the Steam version of the game, Steam Support advises that users experiencing stability or performance problems can try the latest Proton compatibility tool. This is general guidance; it does not establish that Proton is the cause of a launch failure or that a particular older Proton release is a universal fix.

- Open ELDEN RING in your Steam Library.
- Open the game’s Menu/Properties > Compatibility settings.
- Enable the option to force the use of a Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the latest Proton available.
- Start the game and note whether its behavior changes.
Steam warns that forcing a compatibility tool can make Steam download the Windows version if only a Linux build is installed. For Steam’s instructions and caveats, see its Steam Deck troubleshooting guide.
If the game runs but performance is poor
Try a lower graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings to lower the workload. This step addresses performance complaints; it is not a remedy established for a game that cannot install or launch. Change one setting at a time where practical so you can tell whether it helps.

When to contact support
If updating and restarting, isolating third-party applications, and any relevant compatibility or graphics checks do not resolve the problem, use Steam Support for persistent Deck issues. For a game-specific failure, Steam’s ELDEN RING support page directs players to Bandai Namco customer support. Include the symptom, any error text, when it occurs, and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
