The “disaster” label refers to the Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition demo shown at Gamescom in August 2025—not the Switch 2 game that eventually launched. Show-floor reports described frame drops and stuttering during handheld exploration. The game was later delayed for performance adjustments, and post-release reviewers reported a substantially smoother experience, though they did not publish controlled benchmark data.
What went wrong in the Gamescom demo?
At Gamescom on August 20, 2025, IGN reported significant frame-rate drops while turning the camera in Limgrave and other open areas after the tutorial. The report was based on a hands-on demo; booth visitors were not permitted to record gameplay. IGN’s Gamescom hands-on report therefore documents an editorial observation, not a measured frame-rate test.

Nintendo Life’s separate report also described frame drops and stuttering during open-world handheld play. It cautioned that the demo might have been an earlier build. Nintendo listed ELDEN RING: Tarnished Edition among the titles visitors could try at its booth, confirming that the reports concerned a public show-floor demo rather than a private test build (Nintendo’s Gamescom announcement).
Why was the game delayed?
On October 23, 2025, the official Elden Ring site moved the planned Switch 2 release from 2025 to 2026. It said the team had determined that more time was needed for performance adjustments. The notice also moved additional edition content planned for other platforms to 2026. It does not specify the technical cause of the demo’s problems or describe which changes were made. How did the released Switch 2 edition perform?
ELDEN RING: Tarnished Edition arrived on Switch 2 on August 28, 2026, according to TechRadar’s review. The edition includes the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, along with new armor and Torrent appearance customization, as described in Bandai Namco’s announcement.
TechRadar’s reviewer described handheld play as smooth and playable, a marked improvement over the Gamescom impression. The review still noted occasional fade-in and jerky enemy animation in busy scenes. These are observations from a review play session, not a guarantee that performance is identical in every area or situation. (TechRadar’s review.)

Tom’s Guide likewise reported steady performance in its early play and described the game as apparently targeting 30 fps. That figure is the reviewer’s impression, not a confirmed specification or a measured performance profile; the reviewer had not yet reached later areas that could be more demanding. (Tom’s Guide’s hands-on.)

The preview and release reports support a specific conclusion: the Gamescom demo drew complaints about handheld performance, the publisher delayed the game for performance adjustments, and reviewers later described a better-performing release. The cited coverage does not provide average frame rates, low-percentile results, frame-time data, or resolution measurements, so it cannot establish a quantified retail performance profile.

Nor does one port settle how third-party games generally perform on Switch 2. Nintendo describes the console as higher-performance than the original Switch and says some compatible Switch games can load faster or run more stably, while also noting that compatibility and performance benefits vary by game. That context is not evidence that the console itself caused this demo’s problems or that another third-party port will behave the same way. (Nintendo’s Switch 2 developer interview.)
