If Elden Ring is dropping frames, freezing briefly, or hitching during exploration on Windows PC, start with the low-risk fixes below: update the Steam version, turn ray tracing off, verify the game files, close third-party input and overlay utilities, update the GPU driver, and confirm that the game is using your dedicated graphics card.
These steps will not eliminate every frame-time spike. Stutter can also reflect hardware limits, thermal throttling, storage or driver problems, or frame-pacing behavior that remains in the game. The guide below is for the Steam PC version and puts reversible checks ahead of unofficial tweaks.

Quick-fix checklist
- Update Elden Ring through Steam.
- Check the title-screen version and turn Ray Tracing Quality to Off.
- Verify the Steam installation files.
- Temporarily close mouse-control software, overlays, monitoring tools, RGB utilities, and capture applications.
- Update the graphics driver and restart Windows.
- Make sure the game is assigned to the dedicated GPU.
- Lower demanding graphics settings one group at a time.
- Retest the same area after each change, then revert anything that made no difference.
First, identify the kind of stutter
“Stuttering” can describe several different problems:

- Low average FPS: the PC cannot render the selected settings consistently.
- Microstutter: the FPS counter looks reasonable, but brief frame-time spikes make motion uneven.
- Traversal stutter: hitching occurs while entering new areas or loading assets.
- Periodic freezes: the game pauses for longer before recovering, or crashes afterward.
- Input lag: controls feel delayed even when the picture appears smooth.
- Online-only stutter: the problem appears during co-op or PvP but not offline.
- Whole-system hitching: audio, desktop windows, or other applications freeze too. This points more strongly toward a driver, thermal, storage, memory, or broader system issue.
These symptoms do not necessarily share one cause. Players often describe post-update hitching as shader-cache rebuilding or an interaction with anti-cheat, but those are community reports rather than a universal official diagnosis. Use the symptom pattern to decide what to test, not to assume the cause.

1. Update the game and check its version
Outdated or incompletely applied game files should be ruled out before changing system settings.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click ELDEN RING and choose Properties.
- Open Updates and allow Steam to download anything pending.
- Launch the game and read the version information in the lower-right corner of the title screen.
The latest official PC update located for this guide was dated May 28, 2026 and listed App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. Its notes describe fixes for brief or prolonged freezes, unexpected exits, and rendering problems in some environments. Check the title screen and the official update notice rather than assuming those are still the newest numbers if a later update has appeared.
2. Turn ray tracing off
Ray tracing is the most important in-game setting to check first. Bandai Namco has warned that it may be enabled unintentionally on some PC installations and can cause unstable performance. Even the lowest ray-tracing option is not equivalent to ordinary Low graphics settings.
Use this path:
Title screen or in-game menu → System → Graphics → Ray Tracing Quality → Off
Check the setting again after a major update. If performance does not improve immediately, restart the game before judging the result. Disabling ray tracing does not prove that the game is defective; it may simply have pushed the GPU beyond a stable workload or been enabled unexpectedly.
Bandai Namco’s patch guidance also recommends checking the graphics driver when ray tracing causes instability.
3. Verify the Steam files
File verification is a safe next step after an interrupted update, crashes, visual corruption, moving the installation, restoring a backup, or seeing an “Inappropriate activity detected” message.
In Steam, go to:
Library → right-click ELDEN RING → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files
Steam will inspect the installation and reacquire missing or damaged data if necessary. The exact label can change slightly with Steam interface updates, and the scan may take some time depending on the drive and installation size. Verification does not delete your save files and does not guarantee that every frame-pacing issue will disappear.
If Steam reports no problems, do not repeatedly run verification. Move on to the driver, software, and hardware checks. Bandai Namco’s official troubleshooting guidance supports file verification for certain PC errors.

4. Test without third-party utilities
Close background applications temporarily instead of uninstalling them. Prioritize software that hooks into input or the game’s rendering path:

- Controller emulation tools.
- RGB and hardware-control utilities.
- Steam, GPU, chat, or other in-game overlays.
- Screen-recording and streaming software.
- Performance-monitoring overlays.
- Third-party frame limiters.
- Overclocking or undervolting tools.
- Aggressive antivirus or endpoint-security game modes.
Bandai Namco has specifically said that third-party applications controlling mouse behavior may cause unstable frame rates. That does not mean every overlay causes stutter, so treat this as an isolation test:
- Close the utilities.
- Restart Elden Ring.
- Reproduce the same location or activity where the hitch normally occurs.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable applications individually to identify the conflict.
Once identified, update or reconfigure the offending utility rather than permanently disabling all peripheral software.
5. Update the GPU driver—and consider rolling back a recent change
Install the current driver directly from Nvidia, AMD, or Intel, then restart the PC. Do not assume that the newest driver is always best for every system.
If the stutter began immediately after a driver update, try the manufacturer’s clean-install option or test the previous driver that worked correctly. Avoid naming a driver version as a universal solution unless it has been specifically verified for your hardware and game build.

Players commonly report this pattern, but it is not confirmed as the cause of every Elden Ring hitch. Restart Windows, launch without overlays, and test the same area for several minutes before changing caches.
Do not begin by repeatedly deleting shader caches or forcing a particular cache-size setting. Clearing a cache can itself produce additional hitching while data is rebuilt, and neither cache deletion nor an “Unlimited” setting is a guaranteed fix.
6. Confirm the dedicated GPU is being used
This check matters most on gaming laptops, hybrid-graphics systems, and PCs with multiple GPUs.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Choose Browse and select
eldenring.exe. - Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
The executable is normally inside the Steam installation directory, commonly:
SteamsteamappscommonELDEN RINGGameeldenring.exe
Folders vary, so use Steam’s Browse local files command to locate it instead of relying on that example path. This is a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed improvement. If the game was already using the discrete GPU, changing the Windows preference will not increase performance.

7. Reduce graphics settings intelligently
Change one group at a time and test the same scenario. A sensible order is:
- Ray Tracing: Off.
- Resolution or render scale: reduce it if your setup exposes the option and the GPU is saturated.
- Shadow quality.
- Volumetric quality.
- Effects quality.
- Grass quality.
- Anti-aliasing.
You do not need to set every option to Low. If the GPU is the limit, reducing demanding visual settings should help; if the CPU, storage, or game engine is the bottleneck, lowering image quality may have little effect. Aim for consistent frame times and a stable experience rather than the highest possible FPS counter.
Do not treat these as universal fixes: disabling V-Sync, forcing process priority, changing CPU affinity, renaming executables, disabling random Windows devices, or making registry edits can help particular configurations while introducing new problems.

- 64-bit processor and operating system.
- Windows 10.

The listed recommended specifications are:
- Windows 10/11.
- Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X.
- 16 GB RAM.
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB or AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 8 GB.
- DirectX 12, Feature Level 12.0.
- 60 GB available storage.
See the Steam support page and Bandai Namco’s game page for the displayed requirements. They indicate a supported baseline, not a guarantee of 60 FPS or perfect frame pacing at high settings. The publisher notes that the specifications originated as launch-day requirements and may change.
If the problem continues
Only lower settings help
Your system may be GPU-limited, thermally constrained, or operating too close to its performance ceiling. Use a stable preset and check temperatures, clock speeds, GPU utilization, and frame-time consistency with a trusted monitoring tool. Do not infer a solution from average FPS alone.
The whole PC freezes
Return CPU and GPU settings to stock and check for GPU-driver crashes, overheating, unstable overclocks or undervolts, failing RAM, storage errors, power-supply problems, and relevant Windows Event Viewer errors. Test other games: if they also freeze, this is a system troubleshooting problem rather than an Elden Ring graphics-setting problem.

Only traversal causes hitching
Repeated hitches when entering the same areas may reflect asset loading or frame-pacing behavior that remains even on powerful hardware. A high-end GPU does not eliminate CPU, storage, software-hook, or game-engine bottlenecks.
Online play is affected
Stay on the current official build, verify the files, and restore experimental changes before returning online. Do not use modified executables, unofficial files, or anti-cheat bypasses. Disabling Easy Anti-Cheat is not a normal first-line fix and can affect online functionality. For anti-cheat messages, crashes, or persistent problems, use the official support route identified on Steam’s ELDEN RING support page.
When to stop troubleshooting
Apply one change, test, and revert it if it does nothing. If the game remains unstable after updating, disabling ray tracing, verifying files, testing without utilities, checking drivers and GPU selection, and reducing settings, stop stacking undocumented tweaks. Reinstalling Windows is not a normal next step, and unofficial executable replacements can create anti-cheat and online-play problems. Escalate persistent crashes, anti-cheat errors, or system-wide freezes to official support after recording your hardware, driver version, game version, and the exact symptom.
