That breadth makes “overhaul” a fair description, but it does not mean every system or area has been rebuilt. The project’s own description supports a broad gameplay revision rather than a claim that it replaces the whole game. See the ELDEN RING Reforged project page.
Is Reforged harder than vanilla ELDEN RING?
There is no supported blanket answer that Reforged is simply harder—or easier—than the original game. The creators describe their goal as combat that is more balanced, fair, and still challenging. Their documentation puts it this way: “It is not about “easier” or “harder,” but more interesting and balanced combat.” That is the project’s design intent, not an independently measured difficulty result.

Because the mod changes multiple elements of combat, the experience may differ from the base game in ways that cannot be reduced to a single difficulty label. The available project documentation does not provide player-outcome statistics or independent testing that would establish how its current balance compares in practice.
Which versions does the current listing support?
The official Nexus Mods listing showed Reforged version 2.3.5.3, last updated September 24, 2026. Its files listing identified compatibility with ELDEN RING App Ver. 1.17.1 and Calibrations Ver. 1.17.1. These are a dated snapshot, not a promise of compatibility after subsequent updates. Check the project files page before installing and confirm that the mod and your game versions match.

How do you install Elden Ring Reforged?
Follow the project’s included instructions and launcher prompts; the directions below summarize the setup points the documentation calls out. File locations and compatibility can change, so consult the current project documentation as well.
- Extract the mod to a separate location. The documentation advises against extracting it inside the ELDEN RING game folder, Downloads, Desktop, or a folder managed by OneDrive, Dropbox, or a similar service. It gives
C:ERRas an example of a separate folder and says an SSD is preferred, not required. - Run the included launcher. Start “Launch ELDEN RING Reforged” from the extracted mod files and follow its prompts. The readme says Reforged includes its own ModEngine2 installation.
- Enable Tutorials in the game settings. The project documentation says to turn Tutorials on for technical reasons.
What should you know about saves and tools?
The readme documents automatic backups of up to five of the latest save files and points to a restore procedure in the mod’s troubleshoot folder. Treat that as a recovery feature, not a guarantee against save loss; keep your own backup if the save matters to you.

The documentation also cautions against using Elden Mod Loader for the DLL customization process it describes, saying it will likely cause issues with Reforged. Follow the project’s instructions for that setup rather than combining loaders based on guesswork.

Reforged is relevant if you want a broad change to how ELDEN RING’s combat and related mechanics work, rather than a mod whose documented focus is only visual or limited to one isolated feature. Its scope includes enemy and boss behavior, equipment, animations, hitboxes, and camera behavior alongside balance and mechanics.
