How to enter the Shadow Realm
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring.
- Travel to the Cocoon of the Empyrean at Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum and interact with the arm beside the cocoon.
- After arriving in the Realm of Shadow, rest at a Site of Grace. You can then fast travel between the Shadow Realm and the Lands Between.
Bandai Namco Europe’s official entry guide, published June 21, 2024, confirms Radahn and Mohg as the prerequisites. The expansion also requires the Elden Ring base game; check the product listing for the platform and edition you own.

How to prepare for Shadow of the Erdtree bosses
The expansion has two local blessing systems. Their effects apply in the Shadow Realm, not after you return to the Lands Between. If a fight is stopping your progress, exploring for blessing items is one available preparation option; neither system establishes a universal level recommendation or guarantees a particular boss will become easy.
Scadutree Blessing
Collect Scadutree Fragments and use them at a Site of Grace to raise your Scadutree Blessing. Bandai Namco says this increases your attack power and damage negation in expansion areas.

Revered Spirit Ash Blessing
Collect Revered Spirit Ash and apply it at a Site of Grace to improve summoned spirits and the spectral steed in the expansion. This is separate from the Scadutree Blessing, so consider which kind of support you want to strengthen.
How to find the right boss guide without unwanted spoilers
Start with the boss name you encountered, or the region and access point where you found the arena. A route guide should distinguish how to reach the fight from what happens after it, and should mark late-game story revelations before naming them. PC Gamer’s June 20, 2024 guide hub warns that its main-boss coverage contains spoilers, so use spoiler-marked sections cautiously if you want to preserve story surprises.
There is no single authoritative boss count or verified optional-versus-progression classification for every encounter established here. Treat labels such as “optional” as encounter-specific, and do not assume that a boss is required or skippable solely because it appears in a regional list.

Bandai Namco’s version 1.14 patch notes, dated September 10, 2024, describe changes to the final boss: its opening action pattern was changed; some moves were adjusted; damage and stamina damage from some attacks were reduced; the range of some non-weapon attacks was decreased; and the visibility of some attack effects was improved. Those notes document that version, not necessarily every later update. Check your installed game version before relying on move timing or damage behavior described for 1.14.

Does the expansion include a boss-only reference book?
Future Press publishes Elden Ring – Books of Knowledge, Volume III: Shadow of the Erdtree. Its description presents it as a broader physical reference covering the Shadow Realm, quests, progression, builds, concept art, and a poster with locations and Sites of Grace—not as a boss-only manual or a necessary purchase.
