It launched on June 21, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. If you own neither, the Shadow of the Erdtree Edition bundles the base game and expansion.
Do I need Elden Ring to play Shadow of the Erdtree?
Yes. Bandai Namco states on its official Shadow of the Erdtree page that “Shadow Of The Erdtree requires ELDEN RING base game to play.” Buying the expansion by itself does not give you the base game.

When did the DLC release, and what platforms is it on?
Shadow of the Erdtree released June 21, 2024. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Check the listing for your platform before buying; the announcement does not establish current regional pricing, stock, or the entitlements in every storefront listing.
Which edition should you buy?
The key difference is whether the base game is included and whether the product is a digital bundle or a collector package. The official announcements establish these broad contents, but not current prices, availability, or every region’s platform-specific listing.

| Product | Base game included? | What the official description establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion-only purchase | No | The expansion requires the Elden Ring base game. Confirm the platform listing before purchase. |
| Shadow of the Erdtree Edition | Yes | Bandai Namco describes it as a package containing the base game and expansion. See the official announcement. |
| Shadow of the Erdtree Collector’s Edition | Not stated in the cited announcement | The 2024 announcement lists a platform-selected expansion voucher, a 46 cm Messmer the Impaler statue, a 40-page physical art book, and a digital soundtrack. It does not establish that the base game is included. See the official announcement. |
If you already own Elden Ring
Look for the expansion-only listing for your platform. Because the DLC depends on the base game, make sure both products are for a compatible platform and storefront.
If you do not own Elden Ring
The Shadow of the Erdtree Edition is the clear base-game-plus-expansion option in Bandai Namco’s description. Its current availability and exact listing contents may vary by platform and region.
If you want the collector’s physical items
The Collector’s Edition announcement names the statue and physical art book, along with a digital soundtrack and expansion voucher. Since the announcement does not say it includes the base game, check the current product listing rather than assuming it does.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Tarnished Edition the same as the Shadow of the Erdtree Edition?
No. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring page reports 2026 content and describes the Tarnished Edition as bundling the base game with Shadow of the Erdtree while adding new content. That is distinct from the original Shadow of the Erdtree Edition announced in 2024. Check the specific platform listing to see what is offered in your region.
How many copies has Shadow of the Erdtree sold?
FromSoftware reported more than 10 million units shipped worldwide in 2025. The publisher said this total includes specified Shadow of the Erdtree editions and digital downloads. It is a publisher-reported shipment figure, not a count of active players or an independently audited sales total. See FromSoftware’s announcement.
