Do I need the base game?
Yes. Bandai Namco says Shadow of the Erdtree requires Elden Ring. If you do not own the base game, the publisher lists a Shadow of the Erdtree Edition that bundles both. Edition contents and availability can vary by platform and region, so check the current store listing before buying. How do I start the DLC?
- Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood.
- Go to the cocoon in Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum and approach it.
- Speak with Leda when she appears and accept the invitation to follow Miquella’s path into the Shadow Realm.

The official information cited here does not compare the expansion’s difficulty across Journey cycles, nor does it establish a specific recommended character level or blessing threshold. A Journey-cycle comparison should therefore not be treated as confirmed by the publisher on this evidence.

One NG+ detail is documented, but it concerns multiplayer: the version 1.12 patch notes, dated 19 June 2024, say active Summoning Pools carry over to NG+. Players can enable or disable them through the Map Functions Menu. That rule does not explain how DLC progression or encounter difficulty changes in NG+. Read the version 1.12 patch notes.
What are Scadutree Blessings?
Scadutree Blessings and Revered Spirit Ash Blessings are progression systems in the Shadow Realm. The publisher describes them as strengthening the player and spirit-ash support to help even the odds against the area’s enemies. They are separate from a character-level recommendation: the official guide cited here gives no exact level target or required blessing count.
The expansion also adds enemies, boss encounters, weapons, equipment, weapon skills, magic, and plotlines. Those additions mean players may need to adjust their build and tactics, but the feature list is not an official numerical rating of the DLC’s difficulty.
