The Subterranean Shunning-Grounds are an optional sewer area beneath Leyndell. Enter from Avenue Balcony, make Underground Roadside your hub, then choose between the Dung Eater’s cell, the pipe maze and its loot, or the lower route to Mohg, the Omen. A hidden, ending-related path lies beyond the boss. Spoiler note: the final section discusses that route and the Dung Eater quest outcome.

How to enter the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds

  1. Start at the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace in Leyndell and head down the northwestern stairs.
  2. Cross the open area toward the western railing. Jump onto the rooftops and look for a well behind a broken wall.
  3. Climb down the well, open the gate, and follow the damp corridor until you reach the sewers.
  4. Continue past rats and Omen to reach Underground Roadside. You can run past an Omen if your priority is reaching the checkpoint rather than fighting.

Use Underground Roadside to choose your route

Underground Roadside is the area’s practical orientation point. From here, one branch reaches the Dung Eater’s cell; the other leads into the pipe rooms and, eventually, the lower route to Mohg, the Omen.

Route What it leads to Best for
Dung Eater branch The Sewer-Gaol Key-locked cell and NPC quest steps Players pursuing the Dung Eater quest
Pipe rooms Optional items, a shortcut, and the Leyndell Catacombs entrance Loot and exploration
Lower tunnels Forsaken Depths and Mohg, the Omen Reaching the area boss

Explore the pipe maze and collect optional items

The pipe rooms are easy to misread: imps can attack from overhead or concealed positions, and narrow walkways and drops make it easy to lose your bearings. Move carefully, check above you, and use a ranged attack to draw out or remove an ambusher before crossing an exposed stretch. The area walkthrough also describes running past enemies that respawn when your immediate goal is a shortcut or the next checkpoint.

Make the shortcut back toward Underground Roadside

Work through the pipes and ladders until you find the lever-operated shortcut that reconnects toward the grace. Opening it makes subsequent trips through the maze less cumbersome. If you are focused on reaching Mohg, the Omen, opening useful shortcuts as you find them can save backtracking.

Look for Mohg’s Shackle and upgrade materials

An optional lower section of the pipe area contains Mohg’s Shackle, a utility item that can help during the Mohg, the Omen encounter. The route also contains upgrade materials: Smithing Stone [7], Somber Smithing Stone [6] and [7], with Somber Smithing Stone [8] reported farther along the lower route. You can detour for the Shackle now or leave it and return if the boss proves difficult.

Find Shadow Bait and the Leyndell Catacombs entrance

Shadow Bait is an incantation pickup near an Omen and a shortcut. The lower pipe-area branch also contains the entrance to the optional Leyndell Catacombs. These are exploration detours rather than requirements for reaching the area boss.

Reach the Dung Eater’s cell

The corporeal Dung Eater is held behind a locked cell door. You need the Sewer-Gaol Key to open it. The cell is optional for the route to Mohg, the Omen, but visiting it advances the Dung Eater quest.

Exhaust the Dung Eater’s dialogue, then follow the quest’s later steps involving Seedbed Curses. Those choices can lead to the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse, an ending-related reward. Treat this as a quest branch, not a mandatory sewer objective.

Find Mohg, the Omen

  1. From the pipe-area route, continue into the lower tunnels. Fight or bypass Omen as needed, and open shortcuts where practical.
  2. Follow the route to the lift and descend to the Forsaken Depths.
  3. Proceed from the grace to the boss arena and face Mohg, the Omen.

The tunnels are dark, and groups of rats can stun-lock you if they attack together. A lantern or torch helps you see the route; proceed cautiously around rats and check pipe ceilings for imps. Omen can deal heavy damage and take time to defeat, so running past a patrol to reach a grace or open a shortcut is a reasonable route choice.

Mohg, the Omen is a different encounter from Mohg, Lord of Blood. Bandai Namco places Lord of Blood in Mohgwyn Palace and identifies defeating him as the requirement to enter the Shadow Realm in its Shadow of the Erdtree access guide; defeating the sewer boss is not that expansion-access requirement.

What lies beyond Mohg, the Omen?

Beyond the boss is an optional hidden continuation tied to an ending route. Explore it only if you want to uncover that content; it is not required to complete the ordinary route through the Shunning-Grounds. The area beyond the encounter also contains Erdtree’s Favor +1.

Can you return after Leyndell changes?

The Shunning-Grounds are an optional area beneath Leyndell, and the route described here enters through Avenue Balcony and the well. The walkthrough source for this route does not establish how access changes across every version of Leyndell’s later state; check the in-game map and available paths in your current save rather than assuming the entrance is unchanged.
