Somber Smithing Stone [9] upgrades a special armament to +9. You can find one in several late-game base-game regions, including Caelid, the Mountaintops of the Giants, Crumbling Farum Azula, the Haligtree and Consecrated Snowfield; additional pickups appear in Shadow of the Erdtree areas. If you need more than one, tiers 1–9 can also be bought in unlimited quantities from the Twin Maiden Husks after you give them the relevant Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing.
What Somber Smithing Stone [9] does
This bolstering material advances a special armament to +9. Special armaments use the somber upgrade sequence, while ordinary armaments use regular Smithing Stones. Each somber tier advances the weapon by one tier, and [9] is not the final step: a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is required to upgrade a special armament from +9 to +10. The item’s in-game description reads, “Ancient smithing stone drained of color.” Eldenpedia’s item entry and its somber-stone overview describe the item and upgrade sequence.
Where to find Somber Smithing Stone [9]
The base game has pickups across several regions. Examples listed by Eldenpedia include:
- Caelid: a Teardrop Scarab west of Farum Greatbridge in Dragonbarrow, and a circle of chairs south of the Divine Tower of Caelid.
- Mountaintops of the Giants: a corpse on the bridge above Ancient Snow Valley Ruins.
- Crumbling Farum Azula: several corpse pickups.
- Consecrated Snowfield: Yelough Anix Tunnel and other listed pickups.
- Miquella’s Haligtree and Elphael: pickups in both areas.
Shadow of the Erdtree adds listed locations in areas such as the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, Shadow Keep and Enir-Ilim. Those are expansion locations; the base game also contains tier-9 stones, so the expansion is not required to obtain one. The publisher describes Shadow of the Erdtree as additional content on its official Elden Ring page.

For repeat upgrades, give the relevant Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold. They then sell tiers 1–9 in unlimited quantities. This is useful once you have unlocked the bearing; if you are searching for your first tier-9 stone, choose a pickup in an accessible region instead. See Eldenpedia’s somber-stone overview for the purchase unlock.
