Elemental Damage in Games: What It Means and How to Check It

Elemental damage has no universal rules: games define their own damage types, resistance matchups, bonus calculations, and status effects.

Elemental damage is damage tied to a named type—such as fire, ice, or lightning—but the exact types and rules depend on the game. To decide whether an element helps, check which damage types the game counts as elemental, then check how the target responds to that element. An elemental hit does not automatically cause a status effect.

What does “elemental damage” mean?

It is a game-specific combat category, not one universal ruleset. A game may group several damage types under the label “Elemental,” use a different list, or treat elemental attacks and their side effects separately. The label alone does not tell you how damage is calculated or whether an effect will trigger.

Which damage types count as elemental?

The list changes between games. For example:

Game Types included or documented
Grim Dawn Fire, Ice, and Lightning are Elemental Damage. Crate Entertainment’s combat guide
Last Epoch The “Elemental” category specifically applies to Fire, Cold, and Lightning. Eleventh Hour Games support
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak The manual discusses Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice, and Dragon elemental resilience. CAPCOM manual
Diablo III: Elemental Exposure This specific passive responds to Arcane, Cold, Fire, or Lightning damage. That list describes the passive, not a universal definition of elemental damage. Blizzard’s guide

These lists are examples from different games, not a combined list that applies everywhere. For a particular character, skill, or item, use that game’s tooltip or official guide to confirm what its label covers.

How do elemental weaknesses and resistances matter?

An element’s usefulness can depend on the enemy—and sometimes on the body part you are attacking. CAPCOM’s Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak manual describes monsters and body parts that differ in elemental resilience. Its Monster Hunter Generations manual likewise recommends considering a monster’s traits when choosing a weapon element and notes that armor has elemental resistance.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin explains the matchup in terms of the gap between an elemental attack and the opponent’s resistance: the greater the attack surpasses that resistance, the greater the damage. Its manual uses Ice against an Ice-weak opponent as an example. CAPCOM manual

Those are game-specific descriptions, not evidence of a shared formula. Check the target’s resistance information and the game’s own rules rather than assuming that matching an element always increases damage.

Can flat elemental damage and percentage bonuses work differently?

Yes. In Grim Dawn, flat Elemental Damage is divided equally among Fire, Ice, and Lightning. A percentage Elemental Damage bonus instead applies at its full stated percentage to each of those three elements. These are distinct rules for that game; they should not be assumed to apply to another title. Crate Entertainment’s combat guide

Does elemental damage apply a status effect?

Not necessarily. Direct elemental damage and a separate status effect or passive trigger are different mechanics, and their rules vary by game.

  • Diablo III: The Wizard passive Elemental Exposure says that damaging enemies with Arcane, Cold, Fire, or Lightning makes them take 5% more damage from your attacks for 5 seconds. This is the specific passive’s effect, not a general property of elemental damage. Blizzard’s guide

Before building around an effect, check whether the game requires a particular damage type, a separate status application, or an explicit passive. An element’s name by itself does not establish that it causes damage over time or increases later damage.

How to check what an elemental stat does in your game

  1. Identify the exact game and effect. Look at the item, skill, passive, or enemy entry that uses the term; similar labels can mean different things across titles.
  2. Read the damage-type definition. Confirm which named types the game includes under “Elemental,” if it uses that category.
  3. Check the target matchup. Look for enemy or body-part weakness and resistance information where the game provides it.
  4. Separate damage from effects. Read the tooltip for any status, damage-over-time effect, or passive trigger instead of assuming it follows from an elemental hit.
  5. Compare bonus wording carefully. A flat elemental value and a percentage bonus may be handled differently, as they are in Grim Dawn.
