Your camera must provide clean, unencrypted HDMI in a supported format, your computer must offer USB 3.x, and the hardware revision determines whether 4K at 60 frames per second is even possible.
What Elgato Cam Link 4K actually does
Cam Link 4K is an HDMI-to-USB capture device. The camera sends its live video through HDMI, Cam Link converts that signal into a UVC webcam stream, and the computer exposes it to compatible applications. In practical terms, you select Cam Link as a camera source in streaming, video-call, recording, or other webcam software instead of selecting the computer’s built-in camera.

The device does not improve a camera that cannot produce the required signal. It cannot remove menus from an HDMI feed, add a clean-output mode, bypass a camera’s automatic shutdown, or turn a USB 2.0 computer port into a USB 3.x connection. Those capabilities depend on the camera, computer, cable, operating system, and application.

Is your camera compatible with Cam Link 4K?
Use this checklist before buying. Every item matters; a camera that fails one of these checks may produce no picture, a picture with overlays, an unstable connection, or a lower resolution than expected.
1. The camera must output video over HDMI
Cam Link receives HDMI, not a camera’s proprietary USB control or charging connection. Confirm that your camera can send live video from its HDMI port while recording or operating in its intended webcam position. Many cameras use mini-HDMI or micro-HDMI rather than the full-size connector found on Cam Link. Buy a cable with the correct camera-side plug and a standard HDMI plug for the capture device.
Connector size is not an indication of video capability. Two cameras can use the same micro-HDMI socket yet offer different resolutions, frame rates, or menu controls. Check the camera manual for its HDMI output specifications rather than relying on the physical port alone.
2. HDMI output must be clean
A clean feed hides the camera’s menus, focus rectangles, battery icons, recording indicators, and other status graphics. Without it, those elements appear in every stream or call. Look in the camera’s HDMI, display, or external-output settings for an option that disables overlays. The label varies by manufacturer and model.
Elgato recommends connecting the camera directly to an HDMI display and checking the picture before you connect Cam Link. This simple test reveals whether the feed is clean, whether the camera changes output when recording starts, and whether the camera is sending a signal at all. Some models provide a clean feed only in particular shooting modes or at particular frame rates.
3. The output format must be supported
Cam Link accepts a broad range of standard formats, but the camera has to send one of them. Supported modes listed by Elgato include 480p up to 60 fps, 576p up to 50 fps, 720p up to 60 fps, 1080i up to 60 fps, 1080p up to 60 fps, and 2160p up to 30 fps. The latest hardware revision can also accept 2160p60 from compatible cameras.

Do not assume that a camera advertised as “4K” outputs 4K over HDMI. Some cameras record 4K internally but send only 1080p through HDMI, or restrict HDMI output while recording. Your camera’s actual HDMI modes, not its sensor or internal recording specification, determine what Cam Link can capture.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. The camera must stay on for the whole session
Long streams expose power-management limits that short tests do not. Check whether the camera enters sleep mode, disables HDMI output after inactivity, or shuts down after a fixed operating period. Disable battery-saving features where the camera allows it, and verify that the camera can operate from external power while mounted.
A camera-specific dummy battery or AC adapter can be useful for extended sessions. Match the accessory to the exact camera model and voltage requirements; a generic adapter is not automatically safe. External power does not eliminate heat limits, and the camera’s own firmware may still impose a maximum operating time.
5. Your computer needs USB 3.x
Cam Link 4K requires a USB 3.x connection and does not work with USB 2.0. A USB 3.x port may be identified by its operating-system information, connector marking, or computer manual; color coding is not reliable across every computer. Connect directly to a known USB 3.x port when testing.
Hubs and docks can share bandwidth among several devices. That does not make every hub unusable, but it adds another failure point. If the picture freezes or fails to appear, test Cam Link directly on the computer before troubleshooting the camera.
6. The application and operating system must accept the source
Because Cam Link presents itself as a UVC device, webcam-compatible applications can generally select it as a video source. Elgato lists OBS Studio among supported applications but notes that it has not tested every application. A program may impose its own maximum resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, or color-format limit even when Cam Link and the camera support more.

On recent macOS versions, grant the application permission to access the camera and microphone. A missing permission can look like a hardware failure: the device may be connected correctly while the application shows a black frame or no camera at all. Operating-system requirements can change between device revisions, so check the current Elgato requirements for the exact model and computer before purchase.
Cam Link 4K revisions and the 4K60 caveat
There are three hardware identifiers: 20GAM9901, 20GAM9902, and 20GAM9903. Elgato identifies 20GAM9903 as the latest model. The earlier 20GAM9901 and 20GAM9902 revisions top out at 4K30, while 20GAM9903 is the revision associated with 4K60 from compatible cameras.
| Hardware revision | Maximum 4K mode identified by Elgato | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| 20GAM9901 | 2160p30 (4K30) | Does not provide the 4K60 capability associated with the latest model. |
| 20GAM9902 | 2160p30 (4K30) | Does not provide the 4K60 capability associated with the latest model. |
| 20GAM9903 | 2160p60 (4K60) with a compatible camera | Elgato specifies MJPEG for 4K60; the camera must actually output 2160p60. |
For 4K60, all three conditions must be true: you have 20GAM9903, the camera supplies a compatible 2160p60 HDMI signal, and the application accepts the resulting format. Elgato’s supported-source information specifies MJPEG for 4K above 30 fps. A 4K-capable camera paired with an earlier Cam Link revision therefore remains a 4K30 setup.
Check the label on the physical device or its packaging before relying on a retailer listing. “Cam Link 4K” alone does not identify the revision, and used-market listings can combine photographs, specifications, and stock from different generations.
Supported capture modes
| Input mode | Frame-rate limit stated by Elgato | What to verify on the camera |
|---|---|---|
| 480p | Up to 60 fps | Whether the camera offers this HDMI mode and whether the application needs it. |
| 576p | Up to 50 fps | Regional or camera-specific availability. |
| 720p | Up to 60 fps | Exact 30/60-fps choices exposed over HDMI. |
| 1080i | Up to 60 fps | Whether the application handles interlaced input as expected. |
| 1080p | Up to 60 fps | Clean output and the camera’s selected frame rate. |
| 2160p | Up to 30 fps generally | Camera HDMI output and the Cam Link revision. |
| 2160p60 | 60 fps on the latest model with a compatible camera | 20GAM9903, camera support, and MJPEG above 30 fps. |
Frame rate is not just a preference in a menu. The camera, Cam Link revision, USB connection, and application must agree on a mode. If one component cannot accept the selected signal, switch the camera to a lower output before changing other settings.
Cables, power, and physical setup
The standard connection is camera HDMI output to Cam Link HDMI input, then Cam Link USB to a USB 3.x port on the computer. The camera-side connector is the part most often overlooked: mini-HDMI and micro-HDMI cables are not interchangeable, and both differ from full-size HDMI.

Use a cable long enough to reach without tension, but avoid unnecessary extensions during initial setup. A marginal connector or extension can cause intermittent sync, black video, or freezes that resemble a software problem. Once the direct connection is stable, add any extension one piece at a time.

For a desk-mounted camera, external power can prevent a battery warning or shutdown in the middle of a session. Confirm that the camera can output HDMI while externally powered and that its battery compartment accepts the chosen dummy battery. Power behavior is model-specific; Cam Link cannot control the camera’s charging or sleep logic.
How to set up Cam Link 4K
- Confirm the camera signal. Connect the camera to an HDMI monitor or television, select the intended shooting mode, and verify that the picture is clean and remains active when recording or streaming.
- Identify the Cam Link revision. Read the device label and record whether it is 20GAM9901, 20GAM9902, or 20GAM9903. This determines whether 4K60 is on the table.
- Install Camera Hub if needed. Download and install Elgato’s Camera Hub for the device and operating system. The product is designed for plug-and-play use, but the utility is part of Elgato’s recommended quick-start path.
- Connect USB first. Plug Cam Link into a direct USB 3.x port. Avoid USB 2.0 ports, untested hubs, and extension cables while establishing a baseline.
- Connect HDMI. Attach the correct mini-HDMI-to-HDMI or micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable between the camera and Cam Link. The HDMI cable is not supplied with the capture device.
- Power and prepare the camera. Use external power for long sessions when the camera supports it, disable auto-sleep where possible, and select the desired clean HDMI output mode.
- Choose the source in your application. Open the application’s camera or video settings and select Cam Link as the input. In OBS Studio, add or edit a Video Capture Device source and choose Cam Link from the device list.
- Set resolution and frame rate in the application. Start with a mode the camera definitely supports, such as 1080p30, then move to 1080p60 or 4K only after the basic feed is stable. The application may offer fewer choices than the hardware.
- Run a complete-session check. Leave the camera and application running for at least the length of a normal call or stream. Watch for auto-shutdown, heat warnings, battery drain, dropped frames, and a frozen preview.
Why Cam Link video freezes, and how to fix it
Freezing is usually a connection, bandwidth, or source-format problem. Work through the branches below in order so you change one variable at a time.
Start with USB and the cable
- Confirm that Cam Link is connected to USB 3.x, not USB 2.0.
- Reseat the supplied USB cable at both ends and test another known-good USB 3.x cable if available.
- Remove any USB extension cable and connect directly to the computer.
- Try another USB 3.x port. If the computer has more than one USB controller, a port on a different side or chipset may behave differently.
Reduce shared USB load
Other high-bandwidth devices can compete for the same USB controller. Temporarily disconnect external drives, additional capture devices, or other demanding peripherals. If the freeze disappears, reconnect devices one at a time or move Cam Link to a port on another controller.
Lower the source format
Elgato states that lowering the camera’s output resolution or frame rate reduces USB bandwidth use. Change 4K60 to 4K30, 1080p60 to 1080p30, or 1080p to 720p as a diagnostic step. If the lower mode is stable, the original setting exceeded a connection, controller, application, or revision limit.
Check the camera itself
Look for an auto-sleep timer, overheating warning, depleted battery, or a menu that reappeared after the camera changed shooting modes. Reconfirm clean HDMI and verify the signal on an HDMI display. A camera that stops outputting HDMI cannot be repaired by changing the webcam application.
Best Value
- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
Check permissions and application settings
On macOS, review camera and microphone permissions for the application. In any operating system, close other applications that may have claimed Cam Link, then reopen the target program and select the device again. If the operating system sees Cam Link but one application does not, the limitation is likely application support or its selected capture mode.
Cam Link 4K versus using the camera’s USB webcam mode
Some cameras can act as webcams directly over USB, eliminating the HDMI capture device. That path uses fewer physical components, but the camera’s USB implementation may offer a lower resolution, fewer frame rates, or a lower bit rate than its HDMI output. Elgato presents that as a general comparison, not a guarantee for every camera.
| Approach | Advantages | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Cam Link with HDMI | Uses the camera’s external video output; UVC-style selection in webcam applications; supports formats up to the device and camera limits. | Does the camera have clean HDMI? Which connector and modes? Which Cam Link revision? Is USB 3.x available? |
| Camera’s direct USB webcam mode | No HDMI capture box or HDMI cable; often simpler for short calls. | What resolution, frame rates, bit rate, power behavior, and application support does the camera’s USB mode provide? |
| Another HDMI capture device | May offer a different connector, format, or revision that fits a particular workflow. | Does it accept the camera’s exact HDMI signal, require a particular USB generation, or impose its own format restrictions? |
For a decision, compare the actual camera output rather than headline resolution. A stable clean 1080p60 feed is more useful than a nominal 4K mode that the camera cannot sustain, the application cannot select, or the computer cannot carry reliably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWho should buy Cam Link 4K?
It makes sense when
- Your camera already produces clean HDMI and you want to use its lens, framing, or image controls in webcam software.
- You have a direct USB 3.x connection and an application that accepts UVC video sources.
- You need a repeatable connection for streaming, recording, or long video calls and can provide continuous camera power.
- You have verified the Cam Link revision and camera mode required for your target resolution and frame rate.
Choose another route when
- The camera cannot disable HDMI overlays or does not output live video through HDMI.
- Your computer offers only USB 2.0 at the intended connection point.
- You need a camera that can run unattended but its firmware enforces a short shutdown timer or thermal limit.
- You are buying a used unit whose hardware revision is unknown and 4K60 is essential.
What this review can and cannot establish
The supported resolutions, revision distinctions, USB requirement, setup sequence, and troubleshooting guidance above come from Elgato’s product and support documentation. They are specifications and manufacturer guidance, not independent latency, image-quality, thermal, or reliability benchmarks. Actual results vary with the camera model, HDMI cable, USB controller, operating system, application, and session length.
Retail price, stock status, operating-system support, and software compatibility can change. Verify those details for the exact Cam Link revision and computer before ordering, especially when buying older inventory.
Final verdict
Cam Link 4K is best understood as a compatibility tool, not a universal 4K upgrade. If your camera provides clean, unencrypted HDMI; your computer has USB 3.x; your cable matches the camera’s connector; and your application accepts the source, setup is simple and the device can function as a conventional webcam input. The decisive 4K question is the revision: 20GAM9901 and 20GAM9902 stop at 4K30, while 20GAM9903 can handle 4K60 only with a compatible camera and MJPEG above 30 fps. Confirm those conditions before buying, then test the complete camera-and-computer chain rather than relying on the product name alone.
