Verdict: The Elgato Game Capture 4K S is a compact external USB-C card that can capture up to 4K at 60 fps while passing a separate video signal to your display. Its HDMI 2.0 design, HDR recording limits on Windows, and software-dependent host requirements matter more than the headline 4K60 number. At the observed US list price of $159.99 on October 13, 2026, it is a sensible fit for console players who want straightforward 4K60 recording or streaming, but not for buyers who need HDMI 2.1-class refresh rates or guaranteed high-refresh capture at 4K.
What the Elgato 4K S does
The Game Capture 4K S sits between an HDMI source and a display. Your console or gaming PC sends video into the card’s HDMI 2.0 input. The card sends a copy onward through its HDMI 2.0 output for passthrough, while a USB-C connection carries a capture feed to a computer or compatible tablet for recording and streaming.

Those are two separate jobs:
- Capture is the video and audio delivered to the host device and saved or sent to streaming software.
- Passthrough is the signal sent directly to your television or monitor so you can play without relying on the computer’s preview window.
Elgato describes the card as offering 4K60 HDR capture, zero-lag passthrough and broad software compatibility. The manufacturer positions it for current consoles and gaming PCs, including Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is an external tabletop device rather than an internal PCIe card, so you can move it between setups without opening a computer.

Does the Elgato 4K S record in 4K at 60 fps?
Yes. 2160p60 capture is the card’s top stated capture mode, but that does not mean every combination of resolution, refresh rate, HDR, software and computer can run at that ceiling. The manufacturer and reviews distinguish the card’s supported modes, and the Windows host requirements include GPU encoding capability for particular formats.
The most important limitation is refresh rate. The card can pass 1440p at 120 Hz and 1080p at 240 Hz to a display, yet the listed capture limits at those resolutions are lower. A 1440p120 passthrough signal is not automatically a 1440p120 recording. Likewise, 1080p240 output to a monitor does not mean 240-fps capture.
| Signal path | Resolution and frame-rate ceiling listed in the available specifications | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Passthrough | 2160p60 | 4K gameplay can be sent to the display at 60 fps. |
| Passthrough | 1440p120 | High-refresh 1440p can reach the display; capture is a separate limit. |
| Passthrough | 1080p240 | High-refresh 1080p can reach the display; this is not a 240-fps capture claim. |
| Capture | 2160p60 | 4K recording or streaming is supported at up to 60 fps when the host and software meet the requirements. |
| Capture | 1440p60 | 1440p capture is listed up to 60 fps. |
| Capture | 1080p120 | 1080p capture is listed up to 120 fps. |
Do not read the table as proof that every maximum can be selected simultaneously. The exact supported-resolution table, the chosen application and the computer’s encoding path determine what is available in a real setup.

Its headline HDR feature is broader on the passthrough side than on the Windows capture side. HDR10 passthrough is listed up to 4K60, allowing a compatible HDR display to receive a 4K HDR signal while you play. Windows Central lists HDR recording only up to 1080p60 on Windows.
That means a console can send 4K HDR to a television through the card while the computer records a lower-resolution HDR feed, or you can choose a non-HDR capture mode depending on the software and workflow. Treat “4K60 HDR” as a product-level capability that combines separate paths, not as a promise of 4K60 HDR recording in every application.

VRR is similarly described as passthrough support. The available specifications do not establish that VRR metadata is preserved in every captured file or supported by every streaming application.
What devices and software work with it?
Supported HDMI sources
Windows Central lists Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X|S, PCs, iPhone and iPad, Google Pixel devices and other unencrypted HDMI sources. “Unencrypted” is important: protected HDMI video cannot be treated as capturable simply because it uses the same connector.
Capture applications
The listed software includes Elgato Studio for Windows and macOS, Elgato Capture on iPadOS, OBS Studio and additional applications. PC Gamer found that Elgato’s software can display or record gameplay and that its output can also be used in third-party software such as OBS Studio.
Software choice changes the host requirements. Elgato’s support page, updated June 1, 2026, explicitly warns that applications other than Elgato Studio have different system requirements. Confirm the current requirements for your exact operating system, processor, USB configuration and chosen application before buying.
What PC do you need for the Elgato 4K S?
The card is not a guarantee that any computer with a USB-C socket can encode 4K video. Elgato’s Windows encoding guidance lists the following GPU and memory levels for the named modes:

These are Elgato’s listed encoding requirements, not a universal statement about every host, operating system or third-party program. A computer can have a physically compatible USB-C port and still lack the graphics or memory headroom for a stable 4K recording. - Place the card between the source and display. Connect the console or PC’s HDMI output to the 4K S HDMI input. Connect the HDMI output on the card to the television or monitor.
- Connect the host. Use the supplied USB-C cable to connect the card to the computer or supported iPad workflow. Avoid treating the display’s preview window as your playing screen; use the HDMI passthrough output for the lowest-latency experience.
- Install or open your capture software. Use Elgato Studio on Windows or macOS, Elgato Capture on iPadOS, OBS Studio or another supported application. Add the 4K S as the video-capture source according to that application’s normal source-selection process.
- Set the source format. Choose a resolution and refresh rate that appears in the card’s supported mode table. If you want 4K60 capture, make sure the source, software and host are all configured for 2160p60 rather than assuming the card will negotiate it automatically.
- Configure audio. Use HDMI audio for a normal console setup. If your workflow uses analog line-level audio, the card provides a 3.5 mm TRS stereo input. A reviewer also reported that the tested Elgato Studio workflow could not record a PC microphone directly, making the analog input or separate software audio path relevant for that setup.
- Test a short recording. Check the saved file’s resolution, frame rate, HDR behavior and audio before starting a long recording or stream. Passthrough can look correct even when the host is receiving a different capture format.
The basic wiring is simple, but HDMI switches, adapters and unusual monitor chains add variables. Windows Central’s review included a complex HDMI-switch setup and still found operation straightforward, although that experience should not be treated as a guarantee for every switch or display.
What reviewers liked—and where their experiences differed
PC Gamer: portable, intuitive and useful for Switch 2
In its August 21, 2025 review, PC Gamer called setup intuitive and found the software suitable for displaying or recording gameplay, with the output available to third-party apps such as OBS Studio. The reviewer liked the light, portable design and the higher-resolution capture compared with the Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in capture.
That review also noted that the visible improvement over the console’s own capture was less dramatic than expected. On the first Nintendo Switch 2 connection, the reviewer saw oversaturated color; unplugging and reconnecting fixed it in that setup, and the issue did not recur. The reviewer further observed that the weight of attached cables could tilt or move the lightweight unit. These are individual observations, not controlled reliability tests.
Windows Central: clear capture and simple operation
Windows Central reviewer Jez Corden, writing on August 13, 2025, tested the card in Xbox Series X|S and PS5-oriented workflows, including an unusually complex HDMI-switch arrangement. The review praised the software, compact size, capture clarity, straightforward operation and the fact that the card does not need a separate power supply.

The same review identified a workflow limitation: the reviewer could not record a PC microphone directly through the tested Elgato Studio setup and pointed to the 3.5 mm input instead. That is a report about the tested software version and configuration, not proof that every version or audio-routing arrangement behaves identically.
Is the Elgato 4K S worth it?
For a console player who wants an external, plug-and-play path to 4K60 recording, the 4K S has a coherent feature set. It supports the current consoles named by the manufacturer, offers 4K60 capture, can pass 4K60 HDR to a display, includes the basic cables for a normal setup and works with both Elgato software and established third-party tools.
The value case is weaker if your priority is high-refresh competitive gaming at 4K or 1440p. The card’s HDMI 2.0 interface and the separation between passthrough and capture limits mean that a 1440p120 or 1080p240 monitor signal may still produce a 60-fps or 120-fps capture feed. Buyers who need HDMI 2.1 features or higher capture rates should compare another model’s exact mode table rather than relying on a generic “4K” label.
At the observed US price of $159.99, check the current regional price and stock before ordering. The price is a point-in-time listing, not a permanent MSRP guarantee.

4K S versus a higher-tier capture card
| Decision factor | Elgato 4K S | What to seek in a different model |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | HDMI 2.0 | HDMI 2.1 if your source and display require newer bandwidth or feature support |
| 4K capture | Up to 2160p60 listed | Verify the exact resolution, frame rate and HDR combination you need |
| High-refresh passthrough | Up to 1440p120 and 1080p240 listed | Confirm whether the replacement captures those rates, not just passes them through |
| HDR | HDR10 passthrough up to 4K60; Windows HDR capture listed up to 1080p60 | Look for an explicit HDR capture mode at your target resolution |
| Installation | External, portable USB-C unit | An internal card if you prefer a fixed desktop installation |
| Audio workflow | HDMI audio plus 3.5 mm TRS line-in; microphone handling depends on software | Check dedicated microphone inputs and the application’s routing behavior |
PC Gamer notes that Elgato’s 4K X uses HDMI 2.1 and supports higher frame-rate passthrough and recording than the 4K S. That makes the 4K X class relevant for HDMI 2.1 requirements, while the 4K S remains the more portable choice for ordinary 4K60 console capture. Compare the manufacturer’s mode tables for both products before deciding; a higher maximum in one path does not establish the same maximum in another.

Common problems and practical fixes
The image looks oversaturated
PC Gamer encountered oversaturated color on the first Nintendo Switch 2 connection. In that setup, unplugging and reconnecting the card corrected the image and the problem did not return. If you see a similar symptom, reseat the HDMI and USB connections, restart the source and capture software, then verify that the source and display agree on HDR and color settings.
The monitor works, but the recording is the wrong frame rate
That is usually the capture-versus-passthrough distinction. Check the saved file’s properties and the capture source settings in your software. A display running 1440p120 or 1080p240 does not imply that the host receives the same rate.
The computer cannot maintain 4K60
Review the Windows GPU and dual-channel memory requirements, then check the chosen application’s own requirements. Lower the capture format temporarily to identify whether the problem is encoding capacity, USB configuration or a mode mismatch. Elgato’s requirements vary by software, so do not use the Elgato Studio table as a universal OBS requirement.

Windows Central’s tested Elgato Studio workflow did not record a PC microphone directly. Use the application’s separate microphone source if available, route the microphone through a supported audio path, or use the card’s 3.5 mm line-in for an analog source. Test the resulting mix before streaming.
Protected video does not capture
The compatibility list applies to unencrypted HDMI sources. Copy-protected video may pass through differently or be blocked from capture; the card should not be treated as a way around content-protection systems.
Who should buy the Elgato 4K S?
- Buy it if: you want an external card for Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S or a gaming PC; 4K60 capture is your target; you value a small, bus-powered setup; and your computer meets the software-specific requirements.
- Consider another model if: your monitor workflow depends on HDMI 2.1, 4K high-refresh capture, or a capture rate above the 4K S’s listed limits.
- Check your audio plan first if: you need a PC microphone mixed directly in the capture application or you rely on an analog headset setup.
The 4K S’s strongest argument is clarity about its role: it is a convenient bridge from HDMI gameplay to a computer, with 4K60 capture and higher-refresh passthrough available on different paths. Once that distinction is understood, its limits are predictable and its intended audience is clear.
