Elite Dangerous Crashing on PC? 8 Checks for Launch and Stability Problems

Use these eight symptom-based checks to distinguish an Elite Dangerous game crash from a launcher or connection issue, validate files, and gather evidence for Frontier Support.

If Elite Dangerous crashes, will not launch, or becomes unstable on a Windows PC, first identify whether the failure is in the launcher, the game, or the connection. Then work through the checks below that fit the symptom. They are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes; if an error code appears, use Frontier’s instructions for that specific error rather than applying unrelated remedies.

1. Identify what is actually failing

Note when the problem occurs and what remains open. A launcher that closes or gets stuck is different from a game that crashes at startup, a crash during play, or a game that stays open while disconnecting. Frontier Support separates launch, crash, performance, and connection guidance, so matching the symptom can save time.

  • Launcher closes, hangs, or fails to update: treat it as a launcher issue.
  • The game exits or freezes: note whether it happens at startup or during a particular activity.
  • The game remains open but loses connection: investigate connectivity rather than assuming the PC has crashed. A message such as Orange Sidewinder can indicate a server or connection problem.
  • An error code or missing-file message appears: record its exact wording and go to Frontier’s relevant error-specific instructions.

Frontier’s general PC guidance is at Launch, crashing or performance issues with Elite Dangerous on PC.

2. Compare your PC with the published requirements

Steam lists the following requirements for Elite Dangerous. They are published specifications, not a diagnosis of why a particular PC is unstable or a recommendation to buy new hardware.

Compare the listing with your actual CPU, memory, graphics card, DirectX capability, connection, and free storage before changing anything. The operating-system wording on the game listing is not the same as current Steam client support: Steam says its client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. See Steam’s Elite Dangerous system requirements and check your storefront’s current client requirements too.

3. Restart Windows fully and launch normally

Frontier’s general troubleshooting sequence advises a full computer restart. Restart Windows rather than relying on closing and reopening the game, then launch the game normally. Frontier specifically says not to launch it as administrator as part of this general sequence.

4. Validate the game files

If the symptom or error points to damaged or missing game files, use the validation option for the installation you actually use. This is not the same as reinstalling the launcher.

  • Steam: use Steam’s option to verify the integrity of the game files.
  • Epic Games Store: use the game’s Verify option.
  • Standalone Frontier launcher: choose Validate Game Files.

Frontier’s support guide links the relevant validation steps for these cases. Follow the instructions for your storefront and any specific error message rather than combining fixes meant for different problems.

5. Check the graphics driver without guessing

Frontier recommends using current graphics drivers or performing a clean driver reinstall where appropriate. Driver updates do not always improve every setup: Frontier notes that a newer driver can sometimes cause trouble. If the problem began after an update, reverting to a previously working driver may be useful while waiting for a later revision.

Use the graphics-card manufacturer’s official driver instructions; avoid downloading drivers from unrelated sites. If the crash pattern did not change after a driver update, do not assume the driver is the cause.

6. Reinstall the launcher only when its behavior points there

Frontier describes uninstalling and reinstalling the launcher for launcher malfunctions. Use this when the launcher itself is the problem, such as failing to open or behaving incorrectly—not as the automatic first response to every crash that occurs after the game has started.

7. Follow the instructions for the exact error

Some failures have separate remedies. Frontier’s support material covers issues including missing Visual C++ runtime DLLs, missing XINPUT1_3.DLL, authentication failures, and validation or download problems. Match the message you see to its dedicated instructions; a missing runtime, a login failure, and a connection problem are not interchangeable diagnoses.

8. Send useful evidence if the problem continues

If the game prompts you to submit a crash report, send it. When contacting Frontier Support, describe what happened and include details that help distinguish a repeatable game crash from a one-off or connection failure:

  • What unusual behavior occurred before the crash, and whether it has happened the same way before.
  • What you were doing in-game when the problem began.
  • Whether other programs or games have crashed recently.
  • The exact error message or code, if one appeared.
  • A DxDiag report, as Frontier requests for support cases.

If support needs logs, identify your installation source first. Frontier documents different default Windows locations for Frontier, Epic, Steam, and Oculus installations, as well as separate Odyssey game-folder variants. Do not assume a path from another storefront applies to your copy. Use Frontier’s game installation and file locations guide to find files such as NetLog, AppConfig.xml, TelemetryCache.log, Client.log, or Update.log for your installation.
