embd3260.dll is a legacy 32-bit RealPlayer plugin, not a Windows system file. If Windows says embd3260.dll is missing, the reliable fix is to repair or reinstall the RealPlayer installation, codec package, or older application that originally installed it.
The file’s recorded description is “NPReal32, LiveConnect-Enabled Plugin.” It was used as a RealPlayer browser LiveConnect plugin on older x86 versions of Windows. Historical installations placed it in RealPlayer-related directories, including a Real common-files folder, rather than in the normal Windows system directories.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. That can introduce malware, install the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit file, and leave the damaged RealPlayer installation unresolved.
Start by identifying the program that is failing
Before changing files, determine which executable is requesting embd3260.dll. The error may come from RealPlayer itself, an old browser plugin, a codec bundle, or another application that included RealPlayer components.

Check the error window
Write down the full message and the program name in its title bar. A common message is:
This application failed to start because embd3260.dll was not found.
Other Windows loader messages may say that the file cannot be loaded or that the application is not designed to run on Windows. Those messages identify a loading failure, but they do not by themselves prove that the file belongs in a Windows directory.
Check installed applications
- Press
Win+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for RealPlayer, RealTimes, or a RealNetworks-related entry.
- Also look for an old media player, browser plugin package, or codec collection installed around the time the error began.
On Windows 10, open Settings → Apps → Apps & features instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the error names a different application, repair or reinstall that application first. Its copy of embd3260.dll may have been separate from the RealPlayer installation currently shown in Settings.
Check the file path if a copy exists
If Windows Search finds the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
embd3260.dll. - Right-click a result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Details tab.
- Record the complete path, file description, product information, and digital-signature status.
A path inside a RealPlayer or Real common-files directory is consistent with historical installations. A copy in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated program directory needs additional scrutiny. The presence of the file alone does not prove that it is safe.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall RealPlayer
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus any download time
For a normal RealPlayer-related error, this is the most effective fix. embd3260.dll is part of a larger legacy plugin installation, so replacing only the missing file can leave other dependencies, registry entries, or plugin paths broken.

RealNetworks identifies RealPlayer 16 as obsolete and says that it no longer receives updates. The company’s current availability and reinstallation guidance for older versions may change, so use only the installer supplied through RealNetworks’ official Real.com channels.
Uninstall the existing installation
- Close RealPlayer and any old browser that may be using its plugin.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter to open Programs and Features.
- Select RealPlayer, RealTimes, or the relevant RealNetworks entry.
- Select Uninstall.
- Remove the listed RealPlayer components when the uninstaller offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 11, you can also use Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select the three-dot menu beside RealPlayer, and choose Uninstall.
RealPlayer may store playlists and library information separately from the media files. Removing the application does not normally remove the media files themselves, but deleting the RealPlayer library manually can remove playlists. Preserve anything important before deleting program folders.

Install a supported vendor copy
- Open a browser and go to RealNetworks’ official Real.com download area.
- Download the RealPlayer version currently offered for your Windows installation.
- Close other media players and browsers.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch RealPlayer from the Start menu.
Test the action that previously produced the error. If RealPlayer opens and the error no longer appears, the missing component was restored as part of the complete application installation.
If an old application specifically requires a legacy RealPlayer release, do not mix its DLL with a newer package. A current installer may not reproduce an obsolete browser-plugin environment. If the old program is no longer required, removing it is safer than rebuilding an unsupported playback stack.
If RealPlayer does not appear in the uninstall list
RealNetworks recommends installing the current version over the existing files first, then uninstalling it.
- Download the official RealPlayer installer from Real.com.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the over-install.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Programs and Features with
appwiz.cpl. - Uninstall RealPlayer or RealTimes.
- Restart again.
- Reinstall only if you still need the application.
If the error continues after a clean reinstall, continue with the quarantine and parent-application checks below rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection history
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software may have quarantined or deleted an old RealPlayer plugin. Legacy browser components have a security history, so do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review events from the time the error began.
- Open any event that mentions
embd3260.dllor the RealPlayer installation. - Note the original file path and the detection name.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The original path was inside the legitimate RealPlayer installation directory.
- The RealPlayer installer came from RealNetworks or another source you can verify.
- The detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- A current security scan does not identify the surrounding installation as unsafe.
Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device if the file is actually malicious. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make an old player launch.
If the file is quarantined again immediately, remove the old RealPlayer installation and scan Windows. Then reinstall only from the vendor’s official source. Repeatedly restoring the same binary is not a safe repair strategy.
Fix 3: Repair the parent application or codec package
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Some older media applications and third-party RealMedia codec packages bundled or expected RealPlayer components. In that situation, reinstalling RealPlayer alone may not repair the executable that is requesting embd3260.dll.
- Return to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Sort the list by installation date if helpful.
- Identify the program named in the error or found near the start of the failure.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its original developer or organization.
For desktop programs, open appwiz.cpl and look for a Change, Repair, or Modify button instead of an uninstall option.
If the application has a built-in Verify files or Repair installation command, use that before altering Windows files. Do not copy embd3260.dll from one codec pack into another program’s directory. Matching the filename is not enough; the program may require a particular build and companion files.

Fix 4: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit match
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The documented embd3260.dll component is 32-bit. A 32-bit plugin belongs with a 32-bit application and cannot be treated as a general replacement for a 64-bit dependency.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press
Win+I. - Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility subsystem. That does not make a 32-bit plugin suitable for a native 64-bit application.

- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings and enable Platform if that column is available.
- Note whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The exact interface can vary by Windows build. You can also right-click the program’s executable in File Explorer, choose Properties, and inspect its installation folder and vendor information.
The correct repair is to install the matching complete application. Do not rename the file, place a 32-bit copy in System32, or place a 64-bit substitute in a RealPlayer folder.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a cleanup operation, application installation, update, or other system change. It may restore program and registry state, but it cannot guarantee recovery of every deleted application file.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
After signing in, test the affected program. If the DLL is still missing, perform the RealPlayer or parent-application reinstall. System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged third-party application.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when broader corruption is present
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
embd3260.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is showing multiple repair symptoms, such as damaged built-in features, update failures, or unrelated protected system-file errors.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Press
Win+I. - Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Terminal:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Terminal.
- Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open an elevated Terminal again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files; they should not be described as a direct way to recreate a RealPlayer-owned DLL.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows components and interpreting SFC/DISM results is the main difficulty, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its repair actions are provided by the full version, and it is not required when reinstalling RealPlayer is the actual fix.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but embd3260.dll is still missing, that result is expected for a third-party plugin. Return to Fix 1 or Fix 3.

Time needed: 2 minutes
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 embd3260.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A missing plugin cannot be registered, and a plugin that does not support self-registration will produce an error without restoring its dependencies.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 failures as a separate DLL-registration problem involving registration entry points, architecture, and permissions. That is different from a missing RealPlayer component.

Use regsvr32 only when the software developer explicitly documents registration for that exact DLL and provides the correct 32-bit or 64-bit command. For embd3260.dll, repair or reinstall the complete owning application instead.
Fix 8: Update drivers only if the error is part of a wider graphics problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A display driver does not normally restore embd3260.dll, and Device Manager is not the primary fix for a missing RealPlayer plugin. Use this check only when the RealPlayer error appeared alongside display failures, video playback problems, or other graphics-related symptoms.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean vendor-supported driver, identify the graphics adapter, then obtain the driver from the computer or graphics manufacturer. Do not use a driver package to replace embd3260.dll.
If manually identifying hardware, comparing driver versions, and repeating installs is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and updating a driver will not replace this RealPlayer plugin when the application itself is broken.
Fix 9: Check optional Windows features only for unrelated compatibility symptoms
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Features does not install embd3260.dll, and enabling a feature is not a direct repair. It is relevant only if the old application also reports a separate compatibility requirement.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows features.
- Enable only a feature required by the application’s own documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Do not enable legacy components merely because a DLL error appears. In particular, adding a Windows feature will not turn this RealPlayer plugin into a Windows system file.

The likely causes, in practical order, are:
| Cause | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete RealPlayer installation | A program file or plugin was removed during setup or uninstall | Uninstall and reinstall RealPlayer |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed an old binary | Inspect Protection history, then reinstall from the vendor |
| Old codec or media package | Another program expects the legacy plugin | Repair or reinstall that parent program |
| Manual deletion or cleanup | The application directory was partially removed | Reinstall or remove the obsolete application |
| Architecture mismatch | A 32-bit plugin is being mixed with another build or application | Install the matching complete package |
| Recent system change | A restore point may contain the previous program state | Try System Restore, then reinstall if needed |
| Windows corruption | Broader protected system files are damaged | Run DISM, then SFC as a secondary measure |
Historical browser records also associate this plugin with crashes while loading RealPlayer content on old x86 Windows systems. That makes browser playback a poor reason to restore an obsolete plugin unless the legacy application is genuinely required.
Should you delete embd3260.dll?
If you still use the program that requests it, do not delete the file. Repair or reinstall the parent application.
If RealPlayer and the old application are no longer needed:
- Uninstall RealPlayer, RealTimes, and related codec packages through Settings → Apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover folders clearly belonging to the uninstalled application.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Run a Windows Security scan.
Deleting the DLL by itself may leave startup entries, browser plugin references, and other obsolete files behind. Removing the unused application is cleaner and avoids preserving an old component with known security concerns.
Safe-source rules for this file
Use these rules whenever a missing-DLL result appears:
- Download RealPlayer only through RealNetworks’ official Real.com channels.
- Use the original application developer’s installer for an old program or codec package.
- Restore from Windows Security quarantine only after checking the original path and provenance.
- Restore from a known-good backup only when it belongs to the same application and architecture.
- Never download a random standalone DLL.
- Never copy it into
System32orSysWOW64as a general fix. - Never assume a matching filename means a matching build.
Third-party listings may describe a 32-bit 16.0.3.51 file of approximately 0.62 MB, but those details are not confirmed as a current RealNetworks release. Treat old version and size metadata as identification clues, not installation instructions.

FAQ
Is embd3260.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with RealPlayer and RealNetworks software. A copy inside a historical RealPlayer directory is plausible; a copy in a Windows system directory should not automatically be trusted.
Is embd3260.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Check the full path, Properties details, publisher information, provenance, and Windows Security results. A genuine old RealPlayer plugin can still be risky to restore because legacy browser components are obsolete.
Can I download only embd3260.dll?
You should not. The file may be the wrong version or architecture, may be tampered with, and may depend on other RealPlayer files. Reinstall the application that owns it.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no verified evidence that this file belongs to those Microsoft runtimes. Installing them is not the primary remedy.
Will SFC restore the missing file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while embd3260.dll is a RealPlayer-owned application component.
Why does a 64-bit Windows PC need a 32-bit DLL?
64-bit Windows can run many 32-bit applications. The plugin still has to match the 32-bit application that uses it. It is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What if reinstalling RealPlayer does not solve the error?
Identify the executable named in the error, check its installation path, and repair or reinstall that specific application. An old codec bundle or unrelated legacy program may be requesting its own copy.
Can I ignore the error if I no longer use RealPlayer?
Uninstall RealPlayer and any obsolete program that triggers the message. Do not restore the DLL just to silence an application you no longer need.
Does regsvr32 repair this file?
Not as a routine fix. Registration does not recreate a missing file and is appropriate only when the developer explicitly documents registration for that DLL.
What is the most reliable solution?
For a RealPlayer error, remove the damaged installation and reinstall the complete vendor package. If the software is obsolete and unnecessary, uninstall it instead of restoring its legacy plugin.
