imacommon.dll is a legacy Citrix file named IMA Common, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, identify the old Citrix program or service requesting it, then repair or reinstall that exact Citrix installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
imacommon.dll belongs to Citrix Independent Management Architecture, usually abbreviated IMA. IMA was used by older Citrix MetaFrame and XenApp products, including XenApp 6.5 and earlier. Later Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops releases moved to FlexCast Management Architecture, or FMA.
That distinction matters. The current Citrix Workspace app for Windows is not automatically the owner of imacommon.dll, and installing the latest Workspace app is not a guaranteed way to restore it. The file is associated with older Citrix application-delivery and server components.
Windows may display messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because imacommon.dll was not found.”
- “imacommon.dll is missing.”
- “imacommon.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find imacommon.dll.”
- “imacommon.dll could not be located.”
- “imacommon.dll error loading.”
These are reported error variants, not proof that the DLL itself is the only damaged component. The request may come from a missing dependency, a broken installation path, an obsolete shortcut, a partially removed service, or a Citrix server whose IMA startup problem has a different underlying cause.

The filename alone also cannot tell you which executable triggered the message. Start by identifying that executable or Windows service.
Cause-by-symptom guide
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when an old Citrix console or server service starts | Damaged or incomplete XenApp/MetaFrame installation | Repair the matching Citrix installation |
| The file disappeared after antivirus detection | Quarantine or deletion | Review protection history, then repair Citrix |
| The message began after a Citrix upgrade or removal | Incomplete upgrade or stale service/shortcut | Identify the requester and complete repair or uninstall |
| The error appears after restoring an old disk image | Version mismatch or damaged application files | Restore the original Citrix environment or reinstall its matching version |
| A XenApp server’s IMA service will not start | Missing companion files, permissions, datastore, TEMP/TMP, or local-host-cache issue | Inspect service and Event Viewer details, not just the DLL |
| The file is in an unexpected Windows folder | Wrong copy or possible tampering | Do not register or replace it; scan and verify the owning application |
| Several unrelated Windows programs fail | Broader Windows or disk corruption | Run DISM and SFC after checking the Citrix installation |
| An old shortcut fails but Citrix was intentionally removed | Obsolete application registration | Remove the stale shortcut or complete the uninstall |
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting imacommon.dll
Do this before copying files or running repair commands. The correct fix depends on whether the requester is an old Citrix server component, a management console, a shortcut, or something unrelated.
Check the error details
- Reproduce the error once.
- Press Windows + R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- In the right pane, click Filter Current Log.
- Set Logged to a recent time range, or inspect entries created immediately after reproducing the error.
- Look for entries from Application Error, SideBySide, Service Control Manager, or a Citrix component.
- Open the matching event and record:
- The failing application name.
- The application path.
- The faulting module, if shown.
- The service name or error code.
- The timestamp.
If the error occurs while Windows is starting a service, press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Look for an old Citrix or IMA-related service. Open its Properties, note the Service name, and check the Path to executable when available.
Do not assume that the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. An application DLL normally belongs with the application that loads it, and the correct Citrix directory depends on the product and installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck installed Citrix software
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Citrix.
- Record the full product name and version of any old XenApp, MetaFrame, Presentation Server, or Citrix management component.
- Also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features because older installers may be listed there instead.
If the computer is an end-user device with only Citrix Workspace app installed, do not assume Workspace owns imacommon.dll. The file points more strongly toward an older IMA-era component or leftover registration.
Fix 2: Repair the exact Citrix installation
Repair is the safest normal fix when the old Citrix product is still required. It restores the application’s own files and dependencies together instead of placing an isolated DLL into a shared Windows directory.
You need the original Citrix installation media, an organization-approved installer, or an administrator-provided package for the exact product release. Do not use a random “latest” Citrix package as a substitute for an older XenApp or MetaFrame installation.
Use Programs and Features
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the Citrix XenApp, MetaFrame, Presentation Server, or related IMA component.
- Select it.
- Click Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer offers.
- Follow the wizard.
- If prompted for source files, browse to the original installation media or contact the administrator who supplied the package.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Reproduce the original error.
A successful repair should allow the same Citrix executable or service to start without the missing-file message. If the error changes to a different missing file, an entry-point error, or a service initialization error, the original DLL may have been restored but the installation or its dependencies still need attention.

If no repair button exists:
- Locate the original Citrix installer for the installed product.
- Right-click the setup file.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, cancel rather than installing a different release over the top.
- Ask the Citrix administrator for the matching installation media or approved package.
- Reboot after a successful repair.
- Test the same application, console, or service again.
For a server, schedule this work during an approved maintenance window. Older XenApp installations can have dependencies beyond one DLL, including datastore access, service-account permissions, configuration databases, and local host cache data.

Reinstall when repair fails
Use a reinstall when the installer cannot repair the product or the installation is visibly incomplete.
- Confirm that the Citrix product is still required.
- Record its product name, release, server role, configuration, and installation source.
- Back up application and server configuration according to your organization’s Citrix procedure.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Citrix product.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run the matching original installer as administrator.
- Select the required components.
- Restart again and test the application or service.
Do not reinstall only the current Citrix Workspace app and expect that to recreate an IMA server component. Workspace is a current client product, while IMA belongs to an older Citrix architecture.
If the old product is no longer needed, finish removing it instead. A stale shortcut, service, scheduled task, or application registration can continue requesting imacommon.dll after the main files have been deleted.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and file security
A security product may have quarantined or deleted the file. That does not automatically mean the file was malicious, but it does mean you should not blindly restore it.
Review Windows Security
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Open any detection associated with the Citrix installation.
- Record the detected path, threat name, and action taken.
Only restore a quarantined file when all of these are clear:
- The path belongs to the known Citrix installation.
- The installed product is expected to use the file.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are valid when a signature is present.
- Your administrator or security team agrees that the detection is a false positive.
After a confirmed restore, repair the Citrix installation anyway. The quarantine event may have removed companion files or altered the installation.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to make an unknown DLL load. If the file returns to quarantine immediately, stop treating the problem as a routine missing-file error and escalate it as a security investigation.
Fix 4: Check architecture and version compatibility
Public file indexes describe a commonly reported imacommon.dll copy as 32-bit, but that metadata is not confirmed here against a current Citrix installer or official standalone manifest. Treat it as a compatibility warning, not as a universal download specification.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications. However, the DLL must match the executable, Citrix product release, and companion libraries that load it. A random copy can replace a missing-file message with:

- An entry-point error.
- A side-by-side configuration error.
- An access violation.
- A new dependency error.
- A service that starts and immediately stops.
To check the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the requesting process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, 32-bit processes are marked with a suffix such as *32. If Task Manager does not show the information, use the product documentation or ask the Citrix administrator.
Restore the DLL from the exact Citrix installation that owns it. Do not choose a file because its filename, reported version, or bitness merely looks similar.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when broader corruption exists
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They do not normally recreate a third-party Citrix DLL.
Use them when you also see broader symptoms, such as damaged Windows features, repeated system-file errors, failed servicing operations, or several unrelated applications malfunctioning.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Leave the window open and note whether DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Read the final result.
- Restart Windows again.
- Retry the Citrix repair or application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the original Citrix component. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the result remains unresolved, provide the exact messages to your administrator or support team.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair results and cannot tell what changed; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the Citrix product remains the definitive fix for a Citrix-owned DLL.
Fix 6: Do not copy imacommon.dll into System32
Copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is usually the wrong repair.
Those directories are for Windows system components and shared compatibility behavior, not a generic storage location for application files. A copied DLL may:
- Be loaded by the wrong application.
- Conflict with another Citrix release.
- Have missing companion dependencies.
- Fail because the requesting program expects a different path.
- Hide the real problem until the next update or reboot.
Do not download imacommon.dll from a random DLL archive. The file could contain malware, belong to the wrong Citrix release, use the wrong architecture, or be incomplete. No current official Citrix page identified here offers imacommon.dll as a standalone redistributable.
Use the original Citrix media, an organization-approved Citrix package, or a repair operation from the installed product. If the product is no longer needed, uninstall it instead of trying to preserve one orphaned DLL.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a universal DLL repair
regsvr32 works for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not repair every application-support DLL.
imacommon.dll should not be registered merely because Windows reports that it is missing. Running this command can produce another error without restoring the Citrix installation:
regsvr32 imacommon.dll
Only use regsvr32 if Citrix documentation for that exact component explicitly requires registration and provides the correct file path and architecture-specific command. Otherwise, use the Citrix repair or reinstall process.
Fix 8: Reinstall or update related drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, network, or storage driver does not normally supply imacommon.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the Citrix failure began alongside device problems, system crashes, network disconnects, or a failed Windows upgrade.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, Storage controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from the hardware manufacturer or your organization’s approved source.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Citrix application again.
Do not use Device Manager to search randomly for imacommon.dll; it cannot repair a Citrix application file.
Outbyte Driver Updater can make the manual process less tedious when you are checking many devices and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan identifies detected driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a Citrix repair is still required when the missing file belongs to the Citrix installation.
Fix 9: Use System Restore for a recent change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a driver installation, software removal, failed upgrade, or other recent change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that may be removed or restored.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the Citrix component.
System Restore does not replace a proper Citrix installation repair and may not recover files that were deliberately quarantined. Do not use it blindly on a production XenApp server without approval.
XenApp or IMA server troubleshooting
If the error occurs on an old XenApp server, a missing DLL message may be only the visible part of an IMA service failure.
Check the following in order:
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application and System.
- Open
services.msc. - Find the affected IMA-related service.
- Confirm the service account and startup type.
- Check whether the server can reach its IMA datastore.
- Confirm that the service account still has the required permissions.
- Check the configured
TEMPandTMPpaths and confirm that the service account can access them. - Inspect local host cache health according to your Citrix administration procedure.
- Confirm that the server was not restored from an incompatible image.
- Repair the complete XenApp installation rather than replacing only one file.
IMA startup can fail because of datastore connectivity, permissions, temporary-directory configuration, local host cache problems, or missing companion plug-ins. If the service still fails after the correct product repair, collect the service error, Event Viewer entry, executable path, Citrix product release, Windows version, and recent change history for the Citrix administrator.

When to escalate
Escalate instead of continuing to copy files when:
- The product version or installation source is unknown.
- The computer is a production Citrix server.
- The file is repeatedly quarantined.
- The DLL appears outside the expected application directory.
- Repair requests files from unavailable media.
- The IMA service fails with datastore or permissions errors.
- Repair produces new dependency or entry-point errors.
- The original Citrix product has been removed but a service still attempts to start.
- Malware or unauthorized modification is possible.
Provide the exact executable or service name, full file path shown in the error, Citrix product and version, Windows version, Event Viewer details, antivirus action, and the steps already attempted.
Frequently asked questions
Is imacommon.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with Citrix Independent Management Architecture.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is imacommon.dll installed by modern Citrix Workspace app?
Do not assume that it is. IMA belongs to older MetaFrame and XenApp architecture, while current Citrix products use different architecture. Workspace app is not a guaranteed source for this file.
Which Citrix product installed it?
The filename points to an older IMA-based Citrix component, but it does not identify the exact product or release. Check installed programs, Event Viewer, the requesting executable, and the service configuration.
Where should the file be located?
It should be in the directory used by the Citrix application that loads it. The correct path varies by product and installation. Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 simply because those folders are available.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public metadata describes a commonly indexed copy as 32-bit, but that information is not confirmed against a current official Citrix installer. Match the file to the exact executable and Citrix release instead of relying on an archive listing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while imacommon.dll is a third-party Citrix file. Use SFC when there is broader Windows corruption, then repair Citrix separately.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Normally no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that support registration entry points. Use it only when Citrix documentation for the exact component explicitly requires it.
Should I download imacommon.dll separately?
No. A random copy can be malicious, incompatible, or missing required companion files. Repair or reinstall the exact Citrix product from trusted original or administrator-approved media.
What if Citrix is no longer installed?
Check for an obsolete shortcut, service, scheduled task, or application registration. If the old component is not needed, complete its uninstall and remove only documented leftovers rather than restoring the DLL.
