There is no documented universal best build for Emmrich in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The biggest supported build decision comes from his personal quest, The Sacrifice of Souls: pursue lichdom for a Necrosis-and-detonation direction, or save Mannfred for a conditional low-health party-damage direction. For his active abilities, treat Entangling Spirits, The Bell Tolls, and Final Rites as candidates to inspect in your skill tree, not as a verified complete loadout.
How to build Emmrich
Emmrich is the Necromancer, and companions have individual skill trees and specialized gear, as EA describes in its companion overview. Choose skills and equipment around the reward direction you want from his personal quest; then check the current in-game descriptions before spending points or changing gear.
The indexed Game8 page titled “Emmrich Best Builds and Skills” lists Entangling Spirits, The Bell Tolls, and Final Rites. Its full build details are not available in the source consulted here, so the names are starting points for in-game comparison rather than a confirmed skill order or best-in-slot setup.
Choose a quest-reward direction
During The Sacrifice of Souls, Rook chooses between Emmrich pursuing lichdom at the cost of Mannfred and bringing Mannfred back while giving up lichdom. GameSpot describes a different perk and armor reward for each outcome; neither package is established as the best choice for every party.

| Quest outcome | Perk | Armor | Build direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pursue lichdom | Death’s Caress: Emmrich’s damaging abilities apply Necrosis, and the whole party’s affliction damage increases by 25%. | Lich’s Vestige: detonating a Sundered enemy applies Quietus; if the target already has Necrosis or Quietus, the detonation deals 200 extra necrotic damage. | Build around recurring afflictions and detonation synergy. |
| Bring Mannfred back | Life’s Embrace: raises the low-health threshold by 10% and increases whole-party damage by 50% while the party is at low health. | Graven Vestments: increases detonation damage by 50% and grants invulnerability at low health. | Build around conditional low-health benefits and detonations; the bonuses depend on the party being at low health. |
These effects and figures are reported in GameSpot’s account of Emmrich’s quest choice. The low-health rewards are conditional: they do not mean Rook should intentionally let the party take damage without considering the danger.
Which direction should you choose?
Choose lichdom for affliction support
Death’s Caress rewards a party that can apply afflictions, while Lich’s Vestige adds a payoff when detonating a Sundered target. This is the clearer fit if you want Emmrich contributing Necrosis and supporting affliction damage across the team.

Save Mannfred for low-health bonuses
Life’s Embrace and Graven Vestments strengthen the party when it is already at low health, with added detonation damage and invulnerability from the armor. Treat those effects as a recovery-oriented, conditional package rather than a reason to seek low health as a routine tactic.
The choice is also a story decision: the lichdom path costs Mannfred, while saving him means Emmrich gives up lichdom. EA’s romance guide notes that interactions with Manfred influence Emmrich’s bond; that relationship consideration is separate from the combat effects listed above.

Set skills and gear in-game
- Open Emmrich’s companion skill tree and inspect Entangling Spirits, The Bell Tolls, and Final Rites. Compare their current descriptions with the status effects and detonation plan you want; the available source does not establish an exact node order.
- After resolving The Sacrifice of Souls, review the perk and armor effects you received. Favor effects that support your chosen direction rather than assuming ordinary gear has a documented best-in-slot option.
- In combat, look for opportunities to exploit the effects your party can actually trigger: afflictions and Sundered-target detonations for the lichdom rewards, or the stated low-health conditions for the Mannfred rewards.
- Recheck the descriptions after game updates. These recommendations do not claim a tested rotation, enemy-specific performance, or patch-specific ranking.
What this guide can—and cannot—rank
The reward effects support two distinct build directions, but they do not establish a universal winner. The available information does not verify an exact skill-node sequence, ordinary best-in-slot gear, a fixed party rotation, or comparative performance against particular enemies. Use the in-game skill and gear text for your current version, and choose the quest outcome that suits both your preferred combat conditions and story choice.
