Creative director Ian Dallas connected that idea to scuba diving and the forests and landscapes of his childhood in Washington. The game’s haunting quality comes from several layers—those natural impressions, weird fiction, family stories, and a structure of intimate, surreal vignettes—not from one confirmed real-life ghost story or a direct retelling of the developer’s family.
The starting point was awe, not a ghost story
In a 2017 PlayStation.Blog article, Dallas described the original creative aim as capturing awe: “what it feels like to see something that’s simultaneously astonishing and overwhelming,” like being at the bottom of the ocean or in the middle of a dark forest. The ocean and forest are useful clues to the game’s mood: wonder and beauty sit close to darkness and unease.

Dallas connected that sensibility to scuba diving in Washington state, where he had seen the ocean floor slope into darkness, and to memories of feeling small in the forests of his childhood. Familiar details, he explained in an Xbox Wire interview, could make the game’s surreal episodes feel grounded. The intended effect is therefore not simply “scary”; it is the uneasy scale of a world that seems vivid but remains partly unknowable.
Weird fiction supplied the uncanny edge
Dallas called weird fiction the team’s “biggest source of inspiration.” In a PlayStation.Blog interview, he named Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, Jorge Luis Borges, Neil Gaiman, Lord Dunsany, Jean Ray and Kelly Link. He also cited One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks, Ugetsu and Alice in Wonderland.

Giant Sparrow’s original concept document narrows the central conceptual touchstones to Lovecraft’s unknowable universe, Borges’s surrealism, and Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, with its expansive family story and intimate details. These are the developer’s stated reference points, not a claim that the finished game adapts any one of those works.
Why those influences fit the format
The game is built from short playable stories rather than one continuous account. Dallas connected brief vignettes to The Twilight Zone, whose compact stories can establish a strange premise quickly. He also praised the intimacy of radio journalism, particularly This American Life, as a way to bring a human voice into a carefully shaped soundscape. Together, those influences help explain how the game can move between the ordinary and the uncanny without requiring a single, fully explained mythology.

Family and place informed the personal context
Dallas said his mother was diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer while he was making The Unfinished Swan and died during the first year of developing What Remains of Edith Finch. He described that loss as one reason family became a major focus across both games, alongside his longstanding interest in death and impermanence. He spoke of family as something people create that can continue after they are gone.
He also said the Finch house and stories were based around Orcas Island in Washington, a place his family visited often during his childhood. The house was not a copy of his childhood home. Instead, its design was meant to suggest the traces left by people as they change a place over time. The personal connection is real, but the available creator account does not establish the Finch family as an autobiography or link a particular Finch death to a real event.

How the influences shape the game
The launch description called What Remains of Edith Finch “a collection of playable short stories,” each following a different Finch family member at the moment of their death. The family home gives the episodes a shared setting, while each story changes the player’s relationship to its world and actions.
Ordinary actions beside imagined worlds
In Lewis’s story, a routine fish-processing task continues alongside an increasingly elaborate fantasy. Dallas explained that the mundane activity was designed to make the contrast between routine and daydreaming felt through play, rather than merely described. That collision of the familiar and the surreal echoes the broader creative aim: anchor an uncanny experience in details a player can recognize.

Partial stories leave room for mystery
Dallas described the game as being about mystery and perspective. Players encounter individual accounts of the family’s past, not a complete, neutral explanation that settles every uncertainty. In the 2017 PlayStation.Blog interview, he distinguished the game from horror designed primarily to scare: its emphasis, he said, was “a sense of ominous things around you” and being in a space and universe you do not fully understand. Players may still find it frightening; the distinction is about the intended emphasis, not a rule about how everyone will feel.
The clearest explanation of the game’s haunting mood
The game’s mood is best understood as a combination: nature that feels immense, weird-fiction uncertainty, family history, and short stories rooted in specific human details. Dallas’s own account supports awe, mystery and unease as deliberate effects. It does not support a single hidden inspiration, a literal haunting, or the claim that the Finch family’s tragedies reproduce his own.
