Windows 7 Professional includes the Windows games feature, but Microsoft says it is turned off by default in some editions. You can enable it locally—no download or purchase is required—through Control Panel’s Windows Features dialog.
Open Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off, select Games, and click OK. When Windows finishes applying the change, launch an enabled title from Start > All Programs > Games. The same titles may also appear in Games Explorer.

What enabling Games does in Windows 7 Professional
The Games entry in Windows Features controls the built-in Windows 7 game components associated with your installation. In Professional, those components can be present but hidden because the feature is disabled. Selecting the checkbox tells Windows to install or activate the components already included in the operating system.

This is an optional Windows component, not a separate application download. You do not need game installation media, a store account, a controller, or a third-party game pack for the documented procedure. The change affects the current Windows installation and can be reversed later from the same dialog.

Microsoft’s support guidance summarizes the situation as: “By default, the games that come with Windows are turned off, in some editions.” That wording matters: a missing shortcut does not necessarily mean the files are absent, and the exact catalog depends on the Windows edition.
Check these requirements first
- Windows edition: Confirm that the computer is running Windows 7 Professional or another edition whose optional features include Games. Press Start, right-click Computer, choose Properties, and read the Windows edition shown near the top of the System window.
- Permission: Sign in with an account permitted to change Windows features. On a managed computer, an administrator policy may prevent the change even when the feature is normally available.
- Existing installation: The procedure assumes a normal Windows 7 installation rather than a heavily modified image with components removed.
- Completion time: Windows may take a moment to apply the feature and may request a restart. Save open work before confirming any restart prompt.
If you are using a company, school, kiosk, or family-managed computer, ask the administrator before changing optional features. Repeatedly trying the same checkbox will not bypass a policy restriction.
Step-by-step: turn on the Windows 7 games feature
- Open Control Panel. Click Start, then select Control Panel.
- Open the programs section. Choose Programs. If Control Panel is using a different view, open Programs and Features directly.
- Open Windows Features. Under Programs and Features, click Turn Windows features on or off. The Windows Features dialog can take several seconds to populate.
- Select Games. Find Games in the list and select its checkbox. A filled or shaded box can indicate that only some subfeatures are selected.
- Choose individual titles when necessary. Click the plus sign beside Games to expand the entry. Select or clear individual game components according to your preference. If you want the standard set that is available to this edition, leave the parent Games entry selected.
- Apply the change. Click OK. Windows will configure the feature and display a progress message while it makes the change.
- Restart if Windows asks. A restart is not always required, but accept the prompt when it appears so the feature registration can finish cleanly.
- Launch a game. Open Start > All Programs > Games and select an enabled title. You can also check Games Explorer if your installation displays that location.
If the Games folder does not appear immediately, close and reopen the Start menu after the feature operation completes. Search for the title from the Start menu as a second check. Do not install a separate download until you have confirmed that the feature operation completed without an error.

Choosing individual games instead of the whole feature
Expanding Games in the Windows Features dialog gives you finer control. This is useful when you want a smaller Start-menu footprint or when a shared computer should expose only selected titles.

The dialog’s list is authoritative for your particular installation. If a title is not shown as a selectable subfeature, enabling the parent checkbox cannot create it.
Why Professional may not show every Windows 7 game
Windows editions do not carry an identical game catalog. Microsoft specifically notes that some titles, including Chess Titans and Internet Checkers, are available only in some editions. Consequently, enabling Games in Professional may produce fewer titles than you remember from Windows 7 Home Premium or another premium edition.

There is no supported way to obtain an edition-exclusive title merely by checking Games in Professional. If Chess Titans or Internet Checkers is not offered after expansion, that absence is consistent with Microsoft’s edition warning rather than evidence that the checkbox failed.
What to do when Games is missing from the list
Verify the edition and installation
Return to Computer > Properties and confirm the edition. Then reopen Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off and wait for the list to finish loading. A different edition, recovery image, or customized corporate build can expose a different set of optional features.
Check administrative restrictions
Windows Features changes require an account with the necessary permissions. On a managed PC, Group Policy or another administrator control may hide, disable, or revert optional-feature changes. The Microsoft material establishes the Windows Features workflow and edition differences, but it does not prescribe one universal fix for every policy configuration. Contact the device administrator rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.

Look for a modified image
Some installation images remove optional components to reduce disk usage or lock down public computers. If Games is absent entirely—not merely unchecked—the image may no longer contain the component payload. Reinstalling random game packs is not the documented solution. Ask whoever supplied the image whether optional Windows features were removed and whether an original Windows 7 installation source is available.
Distinguish a missing shortcut from a missing feature
If Games is checked but no folder is visible, search from the Start menu and inspect Games Explorer. The Start-menu location can be affected by user-profile settings, while the Windows Features checkbox indicates whether the component is enabled. Sign out and back in, or restart after the feature operation, before treating a missing shortcut as a component failure.

- Looking in Programs and Features for an uninstall entry: Games is controlled under Turn Windows features on or off, not as a conventional third-party program.
- Downloading a “Windows 7 games pack” first: The built-in components are enabled locally when available. Unverified packs can contain modified files and do not solve edition or policy restrictions.
- Assuming Professional has the Home Premium catalog: Edition-limited titles can remain unavailable after a successful enable operation.
- Leaving the dialog before clicking OK: Selecting a box does nothing until you confirm with OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Ignoring a pending restart: A restart may be required to register the feature and refresh Start-menu entries.
- Repeating the procedure under a restricted account: Permission problems must be resolved by an authorized administrator; the steps themselves cannot override policy.
How to disable the games later
To remove access, repeat the same path: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. Clear Games, or expand it and clear only selected titles, then click OK. Accept a restart if Windows requests one. This turns off the optional components; it does not remove unrelated Windows programs or personal files.

Expected result and limits
A successful operation has three signs: Windows completes the feature change without an error, enabled titles appear under Start > All Programs > Games or in Games Explorer, and the Games checkbox remains selected when you reopen Windows Features. The number of titles is edition-dependent, so a smaller list than another Windows 7 computer can be normal.
Microsoft’s documented procedure establishes how to expose games that are present in the operating system. It does not guarantee that every title exists in every edition, nor does it provide a single repair for customized images and administrator policies. Those boundaries explain why enabling the checkbox can be correct even when a particular game remains unavailable.
