What are ENC Wildcards?
ENC Wildcards are special qualification places that let additional countries, territories or teams reach the Esports Nations Cup (ENC) outside the ordinary qualification system. They are not simply another name for a regional-qualifier place. A Wildcard can be created for a representation goal, a host-region pathway or a title-specific invitation, and its eligibility and selection method depend on the category and game.

The Esports Foundation’s announced 2026 framework divided Wildcards into three categories:

- Solidarity Slots: a performance-based route intended to broaden participation among countries and territories with smaller esports footprints or fewer established opportunities for international representation.
- Host Region Slots: places tied to the host region, with the Riyadh edition’s framework designed to represent Gulf Cooperation Council member nations through merit across game titles.
- Special Invites: title-specific invitations whose number and conditions can differ from one game to another.
These categories describe the framework announced for the planned 2026 event. The inaugural ENC was subsequently postponed from November 2026 to November 2027, and the Foundation said revised qualification-pathway details would be provided. Until an updated ruleset is published, treat the categories, dates, eligibility limits and slot counts below as historical 2026-plan details rather than guaranteed 2027 regulations.

The three announced Wildcard categories

The categories are therefore not interchangeable. A Solidarity applicant is evaluated through a representation-focused, performance-based process; a Host Region place is connected to the event’s geographic host area; and a Special Invite follows the rules announced for a particular title.
How Solidarity Slots were supposed to work
Who could apply
The 2026 announcement described an eligibility limit designed to target countries and territories with limited access to the normal qualification route. An eligible country or territory that had not qualified for more than one title could apply in its strongest game. “Strongest game” meant the title in which that national representation had the best competitive case, rather than an automatic right to enter every ENC game.
The wording matters because a Solidarity Slot was not a participation lottery. The Foundation and the relevant game publishers were to make awards after the title qualifiers concluded, taking competitive strength and regional representation into account. A team could therefore meet the application condition without being guaranteed a place.

Two official 2026 explanations gave different opening dates for Solidarity applications: one listed July 23, while a framework press release listed July 20. Both gave August 17, 2026 as the closing date. Because of that inconsistency—and because the event moved to 2027—do not rely on either opening date for a future application. Check the latest ENC rules and announcement before preparing a submission.
What the selection criteria imply
- Competitive strength: results and the level of opposition faced could be relevant to whether a proposed team was ready for an ENC finals field.
- Regional representation: the process was intended to fill geographic and developmental gaps, not merely duplicate countries already well represented through ordinary qualification.
- Publisher involvement: the game publisher was part of the award decision, so evidence accepted for one title might not be identical to evidence accepted for another.
- Post-qualifier timing: applicants had to account for the fact that awards were to be made after the standard title qualifiers, when the remaining representation needs were clearer.
What a Host Region Slot meant for Riyadh
The announced Riyadh edition did not limit host representation to Saudi Arabia alone. Its Host Region Slot concept assigned access to the wider host region and referred specifically to Gulf Cooperation Council member nations. The stated method was merit-based across titles, so geographic eligibility did not by itself guarantee selection.

This is a different mechanism from a host-nation automatic berth. A country from the host region still needed to satisfy the relevant competitive and title conditions set by the framework. The purpose was to make the regional host area visible in the tournament while preserving a performance standard.
The framework did not establish one universal Host Region Slot count for every ENC game. Any 2027 edition could alter the eligible geography, number of places or evaluation method, so teams should wait for the updated title regulations rather than assume that every Gulf Cooperation Council nation receives a berth.
What Special Invites added
Special Invites were the most title-specific Wildcard category. The framework placed them alongside Solidarity allocations for selected games, but it did not create a single formula that applied to the entire ENC. A game announcement could therefore specify an invited team count, an eligibility condition or a selection authority that did not appear in another title’s announcement.
For readers comparing games, the key question is not “How many Wildcards does ENC have?” but “How many Wildcard places does this title’s published field contain, and which category supplies them?” The answer must be taken from that game’s announcement or the eventual 2027 rulebook.
Why Wildcard counts vary by game
ENC qualification was structured title by title. The announced Dota 2 and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) plans demonstrate why a single tournament-wide count would be misleading.

In the Dota 2 and MLBB examples, 16 ranking invitations plus 14 regional qualifier places account for 30 of the 32 teams, leaving two places for the announced Wildcard or invited pathway. That arithmetic applies to those title announcements only. It does not establish a standard ENC ratio for every game.
How Wildcards fit into ENC qualification
The following sequence shows how the announced 2026 system was intended to operate conceptually:
- Title rules establish the field. Each publisher and the Foundation define the game’s team format, ranking invitations, regional qualifiers and any title-specific Wildcard allocations.
- Ranking invitations are determined. Teams receiving direct invitations through the title’s ranking system occupy those places before Wildcard awards are finalized.
- Regional qualifiers are played. Standard qualification determines which teams enter through the ordinary geographic route.
- Remaining representation needs are assessed. Solidarity applicants and other candidates are considered after title qualifiers, when the confirmed field shows which countries, territories and regions remain absent or underrepresented.
- Category-specific awards are announced. The Foundation and publishers make the relevant Solidarity, Host Region or Special Invite decisions under that title’s rules.
- The final ENC field is assembled. Wildcard teams compete in the finals under the same event-level player-experience framework described for other qualified participants.
This order explains why a Wildcard is not a replacement for a regional qualifier. It is an additional route that operates alongside the ordinary routes and is usually finalized only after those routes have produced their teams.
What Wildcard participants were promised
The official explainer for the announced 2026 framework said Wildcard participants would receive full travel and accommodation support. It also said they would compete under the same player-experience framework as other qualified teams and players at the ENC Finals.
Those benefits should be treated as 2026-framework commitments, not a confirmed 2027 package. A revised event schedule could change logistics, eligibility or support terms. Teams should look for the current participation agreement and title rules before budgeting travel or signing players.

2027 status: what changed after the postponement?
On August 18, 2026, the Esports Foundation announced that the inaugural ENC would move from November 2026 to November 2027. The current ENC overview identifies Riyadh in November 2027 as the inaugural event timing. The postponement notice said the Foundation would work with National Team Partners, publishers and other stakeholders on the revised timeline and provide clarity on qualification pathways.
“The decision to postpone the Esports Nations Cup was not taken lightly,” said Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports Foundation.
The announcement did not confirm that the three Wildcard categories, the “not more than one title” Solidarity limit, the application window, the selection criteria or the Dota 2 and MLBB counts would carry over unchanged. Until a new rules document appears, the safest interpretation is:
- The 2026 framework explains the original design and terminology.
- The November 2027 event is the current schedule for the inaugural ENC.
- Detailed Wildcard rules for 2027 remain subject to an updated official announcement.
How teams should evaluate a possible Wildcard route
A national team, federation or prospective roster can use this checklist when a 2027 ruleset is published:

- Identify the title: read the game’s own allocation notice because counts and invitation language can differ.
- Check country or territory eligibility: determine whether the applicant is covered by the geographic definition and whether prior qualification in other titles affects eligibility.
- Choose one strongest game only when required: the 2026 Solidarity wording focused an applicant on its strongest title rather than unrestricted multi-title entry.
- Prepare competitive evidence: assemble recent results, opponent quality, roster eligibility and any ranking information requested by the publisher or Foundation.
- Document representation value: explain how the team adds meaningful national or regional representation rather than duplicating an already filled pathway.
- Record the exact deadline and submission method: do not infer a future window from the conflicting July 20 and July 23 dates in the old materials.
- Verify support terms: confirm whether travel, accommodation and player-experience provisions are still included for the 2027 event.
Common misconceptions about ENC Wildcards
“A Wildcard is an automatic invitation.”
Not necessarily. The term covers several routes. Solidarity awards were to be assessed on competitive strength and regional representation, while Host Region places were merit-based and Special Invites were title-specific.

“There are two Wildcards in every ENC game.”
No. Two places were specified in the announced Dota 2 and MLBB 32-team fields. Other titles had different framework allocations, including a default Solidarity approach in many games and exceptions for Counter-Strike 2.
“The host slot belongs only to the host country.”
The Riyadh framework described a Host Region route for Gulf Cooperation Council member nations, not an automatic berth restricted to one host nation.
“The 2026 application dates are the 2027 dates.”
No. The old materials themselves disagree on whether applications opened July 20 or July 23, although both list August 17 as the closing date. The event’s move to 2027 makes those dates historical unless a new notice adopts them.
“Qualifying through a Wildcard means a different finals experience.”
The announced framework said Wildcard participants would receive the same player-experience framework and support package as other qualified participants. Whether that remains true in 2027 depends on the revised event terms.
What fans should watch for next
Fans following a national team should distinguish three announcements: the overall ENC schedule, the title’s qualification format and the Wildcard decision itself. A country may appear in one announcement because it entered through a ranking invitation, a regional qualifier, a Host Region route or a Special Invite; those are not equivalent results.
The most useful future documents will be the 2027-wide qualification policy and each publisher’s title-specific allocation notice. Together they should answer whether Solidarity Slots remain available, how many places each game has, which countries or territories qualify to apply, who makes the decision and what support the selected teams receive.
Bottom line
An ENC Wildcard is an additional qualification path, not a universal type of automatic invite. The announced 2026 design used Solidarity Slots to widen representation, Host Region Slots to involve the Riyadh region and Special Invites for title-specific needs. Dota 2 and MLBB each showed two Wildcard-related places in 32-team fields, but those numbers cannot be generalized. Because the inaugural ENC moved to November 2027, every detailed 2026 rule should be rechecked against the Foundation’s forthcoming 2027 qualification announcement.
