GamingBolt’s PS5 review praises its art direction and environmental design, but finds that tedious pacing, backtracking, difficulty spikes, and awkward weapon mechanics undermine the experience. Its verdict: 6/10. That makes the game a more natural fit for players drawn to unsettling spaces and interconnected exploration than for anyone expecting consistently smooth combat or brisk progress.
What is End of Abyss?
End of Abyss is developed by Section 9 Interactive and published by Epic Games Publishing. The game combines survival-horror atmosphere with exploration and twin-stick-style combat. A scanner helps locate energy cores, identify logs, and scan enemies, giving players information as they move through unfamiliar areas.
The name “Void Stranger” appears in the supplied review headline, but the cited game and platform sources identify the reviewed title as End of Abyss. It should not be treated as a subtitle or confused with another game.
What works: atmosphere, art direction, and exploration
GamingBolt reviewer Ravi Sinha highlights the oppressive atmosphere, art direction, environmental design, and intriguing setup. GamesRadar’s review likewise describes a survival-horror structure in which unexplored spaces bring hazards. Together, those observations point to the game’s strongest appeal: investigating a threatening place where the setting itself helps sustain tension.

It can surface energy cores, logs, and enemy information, so searching an area is also a way to gather resources and context. The game’s Metroidvania element adds a progression loop: weapons and equipment can strengthen the character and open routes through interconnected areas.
What may frustrate players
Pacing and backtracking
Sinha’s central criticism is that the experience loses momentum. Tedious pacing and extensive backtracking can make exploration feel like delay rather than discovery, particularly for players who prefer a steady sequence of new encounters and destinations.

- NEW LORDS AND ALLIES: Recruit powerful Lords and Allies with abilities designed to help you fight Leviathans and secure victory.
- GAIN EXTRA REWARDS: Defeat the most Leviathans to earn the statue token and gain 5 extra victory points at the end of the game.

- EXPAND YOUR ABYSS EXPERIENCE: Requires the Abyss board game to play. Designed for 2-4 players, ages 14+, this expansion deepens strategy and gameplay.
Combat and weapon handling
The combat aims to be approachable, but GamingBolt found the weapon mechanics awkward. The mix of exploration and twin-stick-style fighting therefore may not feel as polished or intuitive as the premise suggests.
Difficulty spikes
The same review notes difficulty spikes. That matters in a game where exploration leads into hazardous spaces: abrupt increases in challenge can interrupt the tension and make progress feel less readable. The two reviews support these as concerns, but do not establish a standardized measure of difficulty or a universal experience across players.
How the design goal compares with the review criticism
Section 9 co-founder Marcus Ottvall described the intended balance as simple, easy-to-pick-up combat alongside a Metroidvania structure built around new weapons, equipment, character upgrades, and interconnected areas. In GamesRadar’s January 10, 2026 coverage, he said: “We always wanted the game to have relatively simple combat so that the game would be easy to pick up and play, but with a Metroidvania aspect that would let you find new weapons and equipment to power up your character and unlock and explore intertwining areas.”
That goal helps explain the game’s design, but it is not evidence that every mechanic succeeds in practice. GamingBolt’s criticism of weapon handling and pacing suggests the gap prospective players should weigh: the intended loop is accessible combat plus discovery, while the reported experience can be slowed by backtracking and combat friction.

- The Assault Units, the Krohns, will advance towards Zone 1, and once there, they'll attack the Heroes on the wall and try to break into the Citadel
- Gargohs, the Support Units, will advance towards Zone 2 and, once there, they'll hit all Heroes in the Quarter they face
- Molens, the Heavy Units, will attack directly from Zone 3 and damage all Heroes and buildings in the Quarter they face
- Each monster figure on the board will activate and perform their actions according to its rank. The Heroes must coordinate their actions well to share resources
Is End of Abyss worth playing?
Based on the two cited reviews, it is most promising for players who prioritize oppressive atmosphere, detailed environments, and exploration with equipment-based progression. Players who are especially sensitive to backtracking, uneven difficulty, or awkward weapon controls have clearer reasons to wait for more impressions or approach with caution. GamingBolt scored its PS5 review 6/10; that is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus score.
