Enshrouded Base Building Guide: Best Base Locations and Flame Altar Tips

Start near Longkeep, move your main operation to Revelwood, and place every Flame Altar centrally. This guide covers location trade-offs, 40–160 cube sizes, upgrade materials, layouts, outposts and the disputed world altar cap.

Start your first base on open ground near Longkeep in the Springlands, using a small level 1 or 2 Flame Altar. When your character is around level 10–15 and your Flame is level 3, establish a larger main base in Revelwood. The most important building decision is not the house design: it is where you place the Flame Altar, because its level determines the cubic area in which you can build. Upgrade that altar from a 40×40×40 cube to as much as 160×160×160, keep it central, and verify the entire site is covered before committing to a permanent layout.

How Enshrouded bases and Flame Altars work

A base is a protected construction zone anchored by a Flame Altar. You can place floors, walls, roofs, crafting stations, storage and other structures only inside the altar’s build volume. That volume is a cube, not a flat circle, so height and depth matter just as much as distance across the ground.

Two progression systems affect the altar, and they do different jobs:

  • Flame Altar level expands the build cube. A higher altar level gives you more room for buildings, courtyards, cellars and vertical construction.
  • Flame level is a separate progression track that increases how far you can pass into the Shroud and unlocks other progression benefits. Raising Flame level does not automatically enlarge the construction zone.

Because the altar is the anchor for the entire cube, moving it later can invalidate a carefully planned roof, basement or outer wall. Treat the initial placement as a long-term site decision even when the first shelter is temporary.

Flame Altar build-zone sizes and costs

Altar level Build volume Upgrade requirement listed by the wiki Flame-level requirement
1 40×40×40 No materials Flame level 1
2 80×80×80 1 Shroud Core Flame level 1
3 120×120×120 5 Shroud Cores Flame level 2
4 160×160×160 5 Shroud Nexus Flame level 3

The 160×160×160 cube is the largest size in the cited wiki table. A community request for a larger 200×200×200 limit is not evidence that the game has adopted that change, so plan permanent builds around the 160-cube unless your live version displays something different.

Best base locations by stage and play style

No single location is best for every save. A starter camp should minimize building friction and shorten early supply runs; a main base should support several crafting stations, NPCs, storage and repeated Shroud expeditions. The locations below are useful for different purposes.

Location Best use Advantages Trade-offs
Springlands near Longkeep First base Mostly open terrain, straightforward construction and an easy place to learn the building system Limited ambition for a long-term, high-volume compound
Ferndale Restoration project Ruins provide an existing settlement footprint that can be repaired and expanded Irregular walls and leftover structures can make the altar cube difficult to use efficiently
Blue Goblet Tavern Tavern or village-themed build A strong setting for an immersive social or role-play settlement It can be out of the way for long exploration trips unless you rely on fast travel
Revelwood Main base Suitable for a serious compound and a staging point for Shroud runs once you reach the mid-game Requires more resources and planning than a starter camp
Nomad Highlands Mid-game travel and production Useful position when your route and resource needs move toward the highlands Less convenient as an early tutorial-area home
Veilwater Basin shore End-game or water build Shoreline supports water-focused architecture and a distinctive late-game setting Travel and terrain can make the site less practical before your infrastructure is established
Kindlewastes Fortified outpost Good for a defensive forward position in a harsh region Dangerous enemies and severe environmental conditions make it a poor choice for a first or relaxed main base

Your first base: Springlands near Longkeep

For a new world, look for open ground near Longkeep rather than trying to claim a dramatic ruin or a cramped valley. Flat or gently sloping terrain leaves room to learn foundations, stairs, roofs and snapping without spending your first stockpile on major terraforming.

Keep the first build deliberately small

A level 1 or level 2 altar is enough for a practical starter camp. Build only what supports your next expeditions:

  • A bed for a reliable respawn point.
  • A workbench and the other early crafting stations you have unlocked.
  • Covered storage close to the crafting area.
  • A compact roofed room or palisade rather than a decorative fortress.

At level 1 the cube is 40×40×40. Upgrading to level 2 doubles each dimension to 80×80×80 for one Shroud Core, while the Flame requirement remains level 1. That extra space is useful if you want the starter site to survive until the Revelwood move, but it is not a reason to fill the entire cube immediately.

Why not make the starter camp permanent?

Early routes, NPC needs and resource priorities change quickly. A small Springlands camp lets you test your preferred storage and crafting arrangement before you spend rare materials on a large altar and extensive walls. Keep important supplies organized so that moving your production later is a relocation project, not a salvage emergency.

Building a main base in Revelwood

Revelwood becomes the recommended serious base once you are roughly level 10–15 and have reached Flame level 3. At that point, you can justify a larger compound with dedicated production, storage and defensive circulation instead of one multipurpose room.

Choose a site that supports a walled compound

Favor a broad, defensible area with enough relatively even ground for a perimeter wall and interior paths. Avoid placing the altar in a narrow ruin, at the bottom of a valley or against a steep face. Those sites may look attractive, but they waste sections of the cube above cliffs or beyond inaccessible walls and make later expansion awkward.

Use the base as a Shroud staging area

A Revelwood compound can serve as the launch point for repeated Shroud runs. Put consumables, repair materials and frequently used equipment near the exit side of the base, while bulk resources and long-term storage stay deeper inside. This reduces the distance between arrival, resupply and departure without forcing every visitor through your workshop.

Upgrade in stages instead of waiting for a perfect build

Level 3 gives a 120×120×120 cube and requires 5 Shroud Cores with Flame level 2. Level 4 expands that to 160×160×160 and requires 5 Shroud Nexus with Flame level 3. Build a functional core first, then extend walls and upper floors as each upgrade becomes available. A staged compound is easier to correct than a giant shell built before you know how much room your stations and storage actually consume.

How to place a Flame Altar correctly

  1. Walk the proposed site before crafting the altar. Check slopes, ruins, trees, nearby enemy paths, access to the surrounding region and whether you can imagine a perimeter wall.
  2. Decide which structures must fit inside the same cube. Include the main house, workshops, storage, NPC housing, a courtyard, a cellar and any rooftop launch platform you intend to keep.
  3. Position the altar near the center of that future footprint. Do not push it to an edge just because the first hut is on one side. A central anchor leaves room in every direction when the cube expands.
  4. Use the placement preview to inspect coverage. Confirm that the visible build volume reaches the planned roofline, lowest basement level and outer wall. A restoration site can appear large while its roof or cellar sits outside the protected volume.
  5. Place the altar only after checking vertical coverage. The cube extends upward and downward from the altar area; a site that works at ground level may fail when you add a tower or excavate a lower workshop.
  6. Build a cheap test footprint first. Lay out rough corners, a wall line and the largest planned room before investing in decoration. If any corner falls outside the cube, move the altar while the layout is still temporary.

Central placement is especially important at an old ruin. Existing walls can trick you into aligning the altar with a surviving room, but the ruin is not necessarily centered in the usable cube. Coverage matters more than preserving every original wall.

Planning the interior around workflow

A base is easier to use when its floor plan reflects what you do there. Instead of scattering stations wherever a spare wall exists, give each activity a predictable side or level.

Crafting side

Group the workbench and specialist crafting stations where you can move between them without crossing the entire house. Leave enough clearance for additions; a cramped room becomes expensive to rebuild when a new station unlocks.

Storage side

Keep frequently used materials beside crafting and reserve a separate area for bulk or infrequently used items. Labeling or visually grouping containers by function reduces search time and prevents a production room from becoming a maze of chests.

Utility side

Place beds, NPC spaces and other utility facilities away from the main traffic lane. This keeps the workshop clear and gives your living area a coherent shape without making it the only route through the compound.

Vertical circulation

Reserve one stair or ladder route before filling the ground floor. Towers, roof decks and upper workshops consume cube height, while cellars consume it below ground. A 160×160×160 volume is generous, but a poorly centered altar can still leave a tall structure outside the protected space.

Rooftop launch platform

A rooftop platform can make glider departures convenient. Put it on the side facing your usual travel direction, and connect it to the interior with a safe stair or door. Verify the platform remains inside the altar cube; the roof is often the first part of a large build to cross the upper boundary.

Special-purpose locations and outposts

Ferndale restoration bases

Ferndale is a natural choice if the appeal is restoring a settlement rather than raising a new one from bare ground. Reuse sound walls where practical, but do not let the ruins dictate your altar location. If the altar sits at one edge, a repaired roof, courtyard or underground room may extend beyond the build volume.

Blue Goblet Tavern builds

The Blue Goblet Tavern works well for a village or tavern theme. It is a style-first choice: the setting helps the build feel like an established community, but the location can be inconvenient for long exploration loops when fast travel is not available or when you want a central logistics hub.

Nomad Highlands production stops

Use the Nomad Highlands when your mid-game routes and production needs move there. A dedicated altar can reduce repeated hauling, but keep it focused: a travel and production stop does not need the full residential complexity of your Revelwood base.

Veilwater Basin shore homes

The Veilwater Basin shore is suited to a late-game water build. Plan foundations around the shoreline and check the altar cube both inland and over the water before committing to docks, bridges or partially submerged rooms.

Kindlewastes fortifications

Kindlewastes is better treated as a fortified outpost. Hostile enemies and a harsh environment make it demanding as a main home, but a compact defensive position can support expeditions without exposing your entire production network to the region’s hazards.

How many Flame Altars can you place?

The world-wide altar limit is not consistent across the available references. The Enshrouded wiki lists 10 simultaneous Flame Altars, while a third-party hosting guide lists 8. A Steam discussion and a later player comment describe another limit and an update that raised it. Because those claims conflict and the live cap may depend on the current game version or mode, do not design your world around a fixed number without checking the in-game limit in your own version.

This uncertainty matters most in multiplayer. A group that places several temporary mining or travel altars can reach its cap sooner than a solo player who maintains one main base and a couple of outposts. Before adding another altar, review the current count shown by the game and agree with your group which sites are permanent, which are temporary and which can be dismantled.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Putting the altar against a wall or cliff

Symptom: one side of the house fits, but an extension, courtyard or perimeter wall falls outside the build area. Fix: move the altar toward the center before decorating, or redesign the footprint so the protected cube—not the ruin—sets the boundary.

Ignoring the cube’s vertical limits

Symptom: a cellar, tower or roof platform cannot be completed even though the ground plan fits. Fix: check the upper and lower edges during the rough-footprint stage and lower the altar or shorten the structure before committing to detailed interiors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Building too large too early

Symptom: the starter base consumes resources but still lacks useful storage and stations. Fix: return to a bed, workbench, storage and a weatherproof room; expand only when the altar upgrade and your travel needs justify it.

Choosing a scenic but isolated main base

Symptom: the finished home is attractive, but every resource or Shroud trip becomes a long detour. Fix: keep scenic builds such as the Blue Goblet Tavern or Veilwater shore as specialist locations, while using Revelwood for the central compound.

Treating old community tricks as current mechanics

An older player suggestion describes hollowing out the ground around the flame and placing NPCs and storage below the surface. It can be an interesting style, but it is dated advice rather than a guaranteed best practice. Test the arrangement in your current version, especially after changes to building, NPC behavior or altar limits.

A practical progression plan

  1. Springlands phase: place a level 1 altar near Longkeep on open ground, add a bed, workbench and storage, and learn the building controls with a compact shelter.
  2. Early expansion: upgrade to level 2 when one Shroud Core is available and you need the 80×80×80 cube. Keep the layout simple so relocation remains easy.
  3. Revelwood move: around character level 10–15 and Flame level 3, scout a broad site and plan a walled compound that supports Shroud preparation and regular production.
  4. Mid-game construction: use the level 3, 120×120×120 cube after meeting its 5-Shroud-Core and Flame-level-2 requirements. Build the functional core before decorative wings.
  5. Late-game expansion: at Flame level 3, gather 5 Shroud Nexus for level 4 and the 160×160×160 cube. Add upper floors, a cellar, a larger perimeter and a rooftop glider platform only after confirming coverage.
  6. Specialist outposts: add Nomad Highlands, Veilwater Basin or Kindlewastes sites only when the travel or production savings justify another altar and your current world limit allows it.

Base-building checklist

  • Is the first site open enough to learn foundations and roofs?
  • Is the altar central to the planned permanent footprint?
  • Does the preview cover the outer walls, roofline and deepest cellar?
  • Are crafting, storage and utility areas arranged as separate workflows?
  • Will the location shorten your common resource and Shroud routes?
  • Have you reserved room for a stairway, courtyard and future stations?
  • Are you using a specialist outpost rather than forcing a dangerous region to serve as your main home?
  • Have you checked the current altar count in the live game before placing another one?

Bottom line for choosing your sites

Use Springlands near Longkeep to learn the system with a small level 1 or 2 altar. Move your serious production and Shroud staging operation to Revelwood around level 10–15 and Flame level 3. Select Ferndale, the Blue Goblet Tavern, Nomad Highlands, Veilwater Basin or Kindlewastes for specific restoration, theme, travel, water or defense goals rather than treating them as universal replacements for a central base. Most importantly, center every permanent altar and verify its full three-dimensional cube before building around it. The size progression is 40, 80, 120 and 160 units per side; the number of altars allowed in a world remains version-sensitive and should be confirmed in your current game.
